IM OUT OF THINGS! You guys caught on a lot faster than I thought you would. I'll work on more things for a future video. Thanks!
Enjoy this video? Fantastic! Do me a favour and follow me on Instagram - @dpmakestuff. I do giveaways and you get to see what I'm working on every day. Thank you!
Following you.
If one wanted, could they make the secret box with one rectangular compartment rather than the two circular compartments?
wow, purple heart is just beautiful wood.
beautiful name too
Yes I have a piece 4/4 1 Ft. x 5 ft. I've had for 10 years. Afraid to cut it and mess it up. Sad, really.
I like how you include mistakes. Thank you.
Thanks!
Just because everyone thinks it's cool to hate a CNC machines doesn't mean you don't have to use one. But good job otherwise.
haha! I just get tired of the same comments about it over and over again. Thank you very much!
Asher Asberry lol don't even know what a CNC machine is 😂
A very handy tool if you know how to use one but frustrating if you don't really have a clue! That's what a CNC machine is!
Asher Asberry who could ever hate a CNC machine!?
While starting out in woodworking it's best to pick a plan that complements your skill level. Have you made anything from wood before? If not, then pick out a very basic plan for your first project... Check out => 4WoodPlansToday.blogspot.com
This really helped me smuggle drugs across the border. Thanks, Dustin!
also 'murican dollars uncle sent me
Don't worry if they bitch about the CNC. I think it does some cool stuff. It's not your fault they don't have one.
Stroker Ace cnc???
But it's not relevant in simple "how to" video for beginners...
Does anyone watch these and not even make them
Most people I think
Thieves now know where to look.
I would make every thing I've seen made on youtube, but I don't have the equipment, or money to buy them
I watch then make a different one of my design
Dustin Penner just like pornos lol hi from Edmonton :)
For me it would be cut a few pieces of wood I find, glue the together , and boom there my box! ( it might a a bit crooked tho😬😂)
It's not too bad! Just lots of little steps.
sponge bob
Jasmine Torres-Melendez I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought this.
Aqqi It's not really the secret box though, it doesn't use a string >.
Jasmine Torres-Melendez y
we were all thinking it lol
secret compartment for some spare shotgun shells?
Or whatever you want
+random-stuff for random stuff. See what I did there?
batteries?
micro film, sub chips, expensive jewellery, poisons, the key to another compartment on the other side left blank.
Or secret box which is also a secret shotgun itself :)
Love it! never knew that oxidizing purple heart was a thing. Great build Dustin!
I know this comment is a little late. But what is the gold colored metal that was used for the mechanism and how strong is the spring
WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN BRO! I MISS YOUR VIDS!!!:(
oh great video i want to try but all i have is a pencil,
Run the pencil against the sidewalk until it's sharp and then write a note to your neighbour asking if you can use his tablesaw! Thanks for watching!!
Awesome build Dustin! Love the voice over commentary !!
Hi Dustin, compliments on a very nice video. It shows the time and energy you put into both the project and the video itself. Regards from a fellow woodworker/maker/RUclipsr from the Netherlands.
all the cool things you could do if you weren't to poor to afford tools
We all started in the same spot.
lol just cause ur a jew doesn't mean everyone else has to be.....faygola
Where'd you get those hinges?
Nice build. What I've done before when dealing with those tiny screws like you used on the lid is drill an oversized hole, fill it with CA glue, then drill a pilot hole into the glue. It lasts longer and is much tougher.
Also, if it ever does strip or break, it's an easy fix. Just used the same sized bit, drill out the CA, and refill it.
good idea! Thanks!
Lenon Kitchens so you would drill into the dried glue?
Yes, exactly.
thats a smart idea
It works extremely well. Usually, there's no need, but when you start dealing with those tiny screws, it helps a lot.
Not only is this box gorgeous, the secret compartment is well designed & incorporated. Now if there were only way to disguise the release hole... maybe make the ends thinner and pierce through to the purpleheart in a pattern so that you'd have to know where in the pattern to push to release the catch? (Now I'm just getting picky... ;)
Lots of options for release mechanisms. I like the idea of having a pattern on the inside of the box to disguise the hole. I'll keep that one in mind. Thanks!
A real wood worker would not use a drill press. That’s cheating, be a man and use your teeth like me! Also because I know it is of great temptation for you I will reluctantly uh dispose of your cnc for you. Yea, that’s what I will do because I wood and you wish you wood.
If this was meant as an instructional video, it misses the mark by no at least showing what the finished product is and how it works first. I for one become easily bored watching a pair of hands measure, cut, glue and clamp wood without knowing exactly what is being made.
very nice project i think that most people like the idea of a secret compartment
It makes everything a little better!
Very Funny about the CNC machine.....I guess those angry are being forced to watch---hahahah!
Hi , Friends, where it's available, how much cost, who is concern for this furniture,pH no and details please.
Did you actually say people get angry with you for using your CNC router??? Really, they have to be very jellous.
Where did you get the Faux key? Did you purchase it or did you make it yourself?
I made it. There is a video on my channel on how I did it.
I don't see it do you have a link?
+Jason McCabe (Camulas) ruclips.net/video/Vm6RCKOMxGo/видео.html
Thank you
Anybody that gets mad that you use a CNC router is nothing but an annoying nobody. It's awesome that you have one I'm jealous that I don't get to use 1 don't ever stop using it because of the a** holes on RUclips
Noticed the DiResta pencil hold on the board while using the table saw
Oh and by the way, I am aware of the negative reactions some people have when it comes to CNC routers. However, then one should also ban the drill press, sanding machines and so on. With time, new tools become available and in my opinion the tool does not define the woodworker. What defines him is how creative he can be with the new tools that become available to him.
I would have remarked that making a computer design can largely eliminate errors like the one with the lid because ever since I took the time to learn some CAD, my builds suffer from far less errors than before. BUT, seeing your elegant solution to correct the error on the fly made me realize again that there is no replacement for experience and common sense :):) Nice Job!!
Son you can bet your sweet arse, if I had a CNC I would be using it !!!
I am amazed. great work!
Thanks Bailey!
I don't know why I am watching this even though I can't make it
Anyone could make this!
VAK just cool to watch, lol
Meh too
The only step I think I am capable of doing myself is the part where you tickled the spring. Bookmarked this just for that part. :D Excellent workmanship, by the way!
Thank you!
nice work...I love secret compartments!
Very cool... but why not drill three holes and chisel out a bigger hiding place?
It's called "Briwax" (BRI rhymes with HIGH). Brie wax is the crusty outer layer of a French cheese.
I won't stop calling it crusty cheese wax... but thank you for the info.
No tools and no skills but i still need one of those lol. do you sell you work?
I have sold them in the past and I accept the occasional commission piece. It all comes down to the budget.
ok I don't want to enjoy your video , I just want to be practical and want to make it in real
NEXT VIDEO IS A SECRET COMPARTMENT BOX FOR YOUR SECRET COMPARTMENT BOX
Wasn't sure if you got a thing but if you do.... a thing I want
amazing box, by its hidden part and by its visual style and high quality. You blew my mind once again :)
Thanks!
Not much for social media. Do I have to sign in to download your plans??? Thanks. I can draw my own so no problem. Just being efficient (lol) Dad would say lazy.
No need for socials. dpmakestuff.com is where you can find my store. Thanks!
I was under the impression that sunlight(oxidation) cause the color of most tropical woods like purple heart/paduk, bloodwood to turn brown and loose their color??
Other way around. Oxidation causes the colour to appear.
You have worked very hard
Wao i like it very much❤❤
Fack! I missed the small things. =(
But i still win the 1st prize witch is watching your vids you share with us! =)
I especially like those voice over ; )
Thank you!!
This video, in spite of being a cool idea, isn't very informative. Maybe add some specific measurements and such so people can make the same product themselves. I hope that this helps you to improve upon your videos just a little bit. :)
Plans are available on my website. Links in the description.
That block of steel is 23.463 cubic inches.
Fantastic and awesome simple design. thank you
Thanks!
Hammered brass has the bonus of being actually springier than unhammered brass.
(Also, 6.64 pounds is a cute way of saying 3 Kg)
I came here because I wanted to build something after the first 10 seconds decided I couldn't build it... Still watched the video till the end though.
Thanks very much!
Makes video on secret compartment box. Barely shows secret compartment. :(
Makes a video, doesn’t waste time, people too slow to keep up complain ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It baffles my mind how Americans can get any sort of engineering done when they use the imperial system. One sixteenth of an inch? Are you serious?
I'm Canadian. Thanks for showing your own type of ignorance.
I don’t enjoy watching cnc because it’s “manufacturing “ not woodworking
MrGoodDeeds3 I can understand if you don’t enjoy it, but it is not manufacturing. It’s not like you press the magic button and just make something appear. A ton of work goes into creating files and you still must have an understanding of how wood works.
Do You sell your secret compartment boxes?
I would like to buy one of them 😊
I make and sell them case by case. If you're serious, contact me through my website with your budget and I'll tell you if we can work something out.
Dustin Penner I stay in India, do u ship to India?
I ship anywhere I'm able to since you pay for shipping.
Love the super clean aesthetic and your cogent tutorial.
Please don't put a box through a band saw like that again. Use a scrap piece of wood to push it through...
If you're uncomfortable watching me use the bandsaw, it's because you don't know how to use a bandsaw.
Truly amazing! You have earned a new sub!
Thanks very much!
The only reason I have found people get upset, is that the person doing the project defies convention...well without that defying convention...you have no imagination...so don't worry about them, Dustin. As long as all safety procedures are adhered to...who cares....keep at it Dustin...great project.
Brian Morris thanks Brian! You have no idea how much a well thought out, meaningful comment like this means to me.
No worries mate (as we say down under), a little or a lot of genuine praise never hurt anyone, especially if it encourages you to keep at the projects. I love watching all these amateurs coming up with all these creations, as most of the time, it is out of love, or necessity or both, for their hobbies, be it woodwork, or metal creations.
To be honest, sometimes I turn the TV side off and feed my youtube to watch all this into larger screen, in the lounge room (now my son showed me how)
...100% more entertaining. But most nights it is just viewing on the laptop.
Beautiful but to mach VELOCE.
That bandsaw blade guard is way too high
TheWoodCrafter it did the trick.
The drill press is like a pencil sharpener on steroids
Patrick Star will surely like this.
Ah. I see you're a man of culture as well.
nice work DP wish you the best
Thanks!
Interesting build, but the background music was really irritating.
Roger Keith neat.
That box is like watch box of 24 movie
nice build
Beautiful box!
Thanks!
I just keep waiting for a finger to go flying off. Makes me cringe every time.
If you’re cringing at the things I do in this video you don’t have a clue.
Great build! Sad I missed the thing! Had to play the pause game a bunch lol.
this music is from sim city XD
How about you get a face transplant because I thought your camera was broken the whole in tire time
the whole "in tire" time you say? hmm.. this is a problem.
?porque pasas las mano tan cerca de las sierras?
I try it and successfully made that
Nice one Dustin! Nice job free-handing the hinge route too.
thumbs up just because of the philosophy behind the branding.
Thanks!
Yeah make a small secret compartment that hard to find but easy to steal lol just lift the damn thing and run
If you live in a shitty, theft prone area you should move. This is a box, not a safe.
How can I get the plans to the hidden compartment box with the purple rose wood?
Gary Tritt links are in the video description. That’s Purple Heart wood.
Faux key.
I liked that scene in The Pianist ( or Jakob the Liar ? ) when they suggested hiding the money from the Nazis under the newspaper on the table.
+Noodles37UK yeah I remember that scene. It was The Pianist.
Ta. I forget if they used the tactic, but to be honest i have a feeling it would work if people kept a cool nerve. And their eyes off the table.Dustin Penner
I started this thinking he was just making a regular box despite the obvious title.🙃
Thanks!
Beautiful work but its not very secret if you open the box and can see that hole..
Perhaps if you make a lots of holes as a design but only 1 works would be nice
You should have made a false floor that can slide, just a tiny bit, to push the spring off the edge, instead of an obvious hole. EG, a secured floor, seen outside, but the inner floor floating above that, retained under the cut-out that also holds the solid floor. A tiny push to one side, and it opens the compartment. If you had one on the other side, you push it the other way to open the other compartment. Go totally stealth that way.
Another stealth idea... If not a sliding floor, then make a flexible inner trim that is attached at the far side of the clip only. Mounted in a similar notch as the floor panel. A little pressure on the trim, in the spring corner, and it pushes the spring off the lip, to open the compartment. If there is on on both sides, it will just seem like it is part of the design holding the box together.
Another stealth idea... A brass tack key, which is permanently mounted against the spring, pushing from the top. You drill a hole going down to the spring and insert a rod that is soldered to a sort-of oversized tack-head. You make the head so it just protrudes out of the hole, so it looks like the matching decorative bras tacks that you add across the other ends. Push that one down and the attached rod pushes the spring to depress it a bit, pushing it off the edge of the retainer lip. The spring which pushes the shelf out, can also be the same spring that keeps the push-button tack-head up, so the rod will be out of the way when you insert the drawer back into the slot.
Damn, you say the CNC brings out the anger in everybody? All of your tools are top of the line. No anger, just extreme envy. It must be nice. If I win the lottery I might be able to half of the equipment you have.
all that work to hide two cigarette butts
Man, I'd cut off a finger to be able to have one of those Saw Stop table saws.
I like the dedication! It's a great saw, and it's worth the money. They have the contractor saw which is significantly cheaper than the cabinet saw if you're interested.
you could go extra....make a fake bottom and hide the key to the hole in that fake bottom
That's a good idea! Thanks!
Beautiful piece. You have a new subscriber. I learned a couple little hacks on just this vid. Thanks a bunch. Kris from St. Louis. God Bless
Purpleheart... Pretty!!Faux key is like a mini ice pick :)
PH looks nice, but it has to be the worst wood to work with! Thanks Kriss!
Very cool.. I am new at woodworking and have been trying to find thing I can do. But while looking some of the thing are either to simple and plain or are little more complicated and higher degree than I am, but I think I will try this. But I actually was hoping that you could answer a question about the wax that you used I am actually working on another project and I am needing to put wax on some of the parts so they will move smoothly, but I tried candle wax and it is difficult to rub on and also hard to put it in hard to reach places, I was trying to think what other kind of wax that I would be able to put on myself with a brush or my finger, but haven’t been able to until I watched this vid. Well thanks and I hope that you won’t mind the question.
From, Keith: I have had a lot of people wanting me to make things with hidden compartments. This is the first one I have truly liked, I am going to learn how to make it even though I will be making a lot of firewood in process but I know I am learning from a true professional. I'm glad to have found you, thanks, Keith in N.C.
what's the tool (0:59) for marking, I've seen it before on his channel and can't find it online. jig maybe?
Same initials
Dennis Pivovarov my sister has those initials too
also the same name as a hockey player who once played for the team close to this guy's town
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dustin_Penner
Never trust a carpenter ..with a clean workshop !
lol
Half my time building, the other half cleaning! Thanks!
what tipe of wood are you using
Line it with felt or a similar rough cloth to hide the keyhole, then place a basic half mortise lock to give the impression you are already protecting the contents. I'd connect the compartment's 2 holes though, fit a key or other portion to a separate puzzle box inside.
I would just take the whole box, instead of figure out the Secret Compartment lol
i literally just want to make this so i can hide an embarrassing picture of spongebob at the christmas party.
They are just jealous of you having a CNC and they haven't! Great job with the box. You are very talented!!! Cheers Sean
Do you have the exact measurements for the wood? Just the dimensions of the actual box would work. I want to do this for wood shop but my teacher requires exact measurements to grade off of. If you could get those that would be great! Thanks
I have build plans available on my website. Link in the description.
Dustin Penner thanks!!
