You forgot to talk about all the Canadian's coming down to shop at the Belllisfair Mall, and grocery shop, buy gas etc. It gets beyond busy with locals and Canadian's. Their money goes a lot farther here than in Canada. And the Canadian's are very fun people - it just gets super busy. They even come down to Skagit Valley to shop at Costco. Problem with Western Washington is Housing is majorly expensive - you do not get much for the money. Most of the smaller homes have been bought up and used as B&B's by realtors.

Yeah, gotta essentially agree with everything in this video. With respect to politics, there’s a huge divide between Bellingham and the outlying county areas. Even the liberal core of Bellingham has realized that the drug/homeless problem downtown is killing the area; they’ve elected a new mayor that promises to deal with these issues more head-on than the outgoing mayor.

I grew up in Anchorage from 1961 to 1977 and loved it. We took advantage of the sun at midnight and would play outdoors. We walked everywhere in the winter and the snow was beautiful. The weekends were spent skiing or ice skating in the winter. If people don't get outside and enjoy themselves in nature it doesn't matter where you live...you will not be happy. To people who read this from wa bellingham. I thank you for trying your best to fix the pipeline issues. We can’t change anything but the fact that y’all or y’all’s parents fought so hard for our safety. All I can say is thank you.
Wrong on the politics. I come from Iowa/Nebraska. Drugs are huge in the Midwest. Look at WV & OH. You see what you want to see. You're in a blue state so you blame it on the blue. Many of these folks are from red counties. Texas has a huge drug problem too. I really think this perspective is biased despite putting it out there as unbiased & posed as a question. I was surprised by the ending. I'm surprised you didn't pose the question, Why does it rain so much? Is it the government controlling the weather? Or Why is it so dark in the winter if the earth is flat? Or Why are most of the homeless yt folk? Is it because immigrants are taking yt jobs? Moving from the Midwest to Washington IS night and day. But it's not the drugs & homeless. Drugs are an American problem, not a local one, not a blue or red one. Why didn't you mention how gay Bellingham is? Since you're leaning toward politics.😢😢😢
1. I am an immigrant 2. My uncle is Gay and he is one of my favorite people on this plant, who i love very much! 3. This is an educational video to inform people on why people leave the area, you might be over thinking this entire video. 4. I do appreciate you commenting! Is there any other topics that you would like to see me make content about that is relatable to our area?
1. People born here mostly dont care about the weather. 2. Yes we need more vitamin d. 3. Cost of living is insane and i found its cheaper to buy a condo than rent a room yearly in Bellingham. 4 same thing...... 5. You might need to know some people personally and also have experience in what youre looking for. 6. The homelessness.... A lot have come from other states and Seattle. Been robbed of bikes 5 times and cost me thousands. Fent has been HUGE here and most of us are sick of any drug use. Id rather see these people get help from the state. Okay number one now???? The politics. Nothing is enabled. Think about LA OR florida or something idk. But yeah its a blue state but most people dont care either its about what they personally care about 12:50
Moved here from Florida. Love the weather here. Politics are waaaay toned down here. Gas is a lot more expensive. Ev much more common, electricity is very cheap and heat doesn’t kill your batteries prematurely. There is homelessness in Florida too. Really no industry in Whatcom county, maybe agriculture. The university is the largest employer. Food costs are higher than Florida. My biggest inconvenience is how busy some stores are due to the Canadians cross border shopping. Trader Joe’s is the highest revenue generator for all of Trader Joe’s in the USA. They never stop stocking the shelves. One can hardly move inside. Highway is packed with BC plates all going under the speed limit. I guess cross border shopping is the main industry here.
if you mean are people around here anti skin color, generally we dont give a rats ass what your outside color is as long as you bleed red. That makes you human. If you're a farmer or rancher, however, yoou ARE the minority.
Yes it is minority friendly, but hard to make contacts especially with the locals it is really IMPORTANT to know people there or get to know them and find good work because I spent 7 years there and lets just say living in a populated area apartments and can't find people to talk to or a job? I noticed some people would seem friendly one moment next moment not as friendly! but there is Great views though great hiking areas Lynden did not help much either when i was up there! Making contacts is just as crucial as finding work or school it is a college city but I wouldn't go to college unless I actually knew people there! I walked those streets enough now I'm in the wilderness now I can blame myself more for my mistakes!
The minority is the blond, blue eyed look. Lots of Asians, Canadians lotsa really shitty medical care ( don’t leave Seattle) traffic, and more Canadians bought the two houses for sale in your neighborhood , they turn them into Bnbs…….city has no real soul at all, just wayward hipsters and old white folks makingbank off rent.
Lived there for over six years. Rarely ever saw a person of color. After a couple of years, we wondered where they were hiding the Black people. Left because of the isolation. Been much happier since.
There are some tech companies lol just not any major headquarters. TMobile is actually one. One of their biggest call centers is in Bham. Then there is Halo psa and other SaaS companies.
We do tend to have people feel like this. In Seattle, they call it the "Seattle Freeze", its much harsher down there. Im not sure its a NW thing, but in the south you definitely have more people that tend to look and smile at you in the streets!
@@livinginbellinghamwa1it is extremely hard to find friend there, I lived there for 14 years, and only had a handful of of friends, people are not very friendly, and they think you’re weird if you are friendly?? I never could understand the mentally.
You should been there in mid 70s. It was magical. I suppose mainly cause I was young. How I miss those days. Really miss the original Tony’s coffee shop.
Compare housing prices in Bellingham with housing prices in the Seattle/East Side areas, and you will agree that Bellingham is a playground with much lower costs of housing.
The military introduced me to Washington State, Whidbey Island Navy airbase back in 1986. I fell in love with the areas geographic beauty. Being in the Navy you do move around. I left Washington but wanted to come back and I did. I definitely seen the change, especially after leaving military service and moving to Whatcom County. Bellingham is a great place but the political landscape has changed. Something I didn't notice while in military. The sterile and insulated military life I imagine. There is definitely a difference living and interacting with military community of Oak Harbor than Bellingham. However, places like Ferndale, Lynden, Everson and Birch Bay were comparable, especially interacting with the people. That's when you meet the locals that were born and raised in the area. Definitely not a bunch of raging liberals. In fact, many of them consider themselves conservative and very nice people. However, I have meet and interacted with self proclaimed liberals and find many of them rude and a bunch of passive aggressive idiots. Quite a few are passively aggressive racist as well. Based on what came out of their mouths not perception. I'm a black male that prefers to live in the County versus Bellingham. The cost of living is why I'm planning my departure back to my home state, Ohio.
Not an urban legend:for the last few decades, the western part of the continent has used Bellingham as a dumping ground for destitute folks.Las Vegas,Alaska,Oregon, etc will round up large quantities of people, give them a one way ticket to Bellingham. We have Seattle rents but not Seattle wages. As a former Minnesotan,I chuckled about the "bad weather"This is the tropics, baby😂😂😂I love it here, been here since 2010
Nailed it. #4 homelessness, crime and drugs have ruined my 27 year experience in Bellingham which used to be great, and I am selling my house because of it. #5 The politics are what make number four possible. Adopting every nut job progressive idea possible. I'm moving to the County where people on the whole are a little more sane.
Why didn't you mention the major employers in the education system? Western Washington University and Bellingham Public Schools combined may employ more people than the hospitals. Also, we are seeing some improvement in the homelessness situation. Look at Railroad Avenue in 2024 and compare that with the five previous years. It is better. People are moving TO Bellingham for some of the political reasons that you said that they are moving away! So while you do have some valid points, your perspective is a bit clouded by your political leanings. Of course, everybody's perspective is influenced by such things. Thanks for your observations and opinions!
@@markwheatley5932 thank you for your input! I hope you understand that I was doing a video that explained why people may be leaving our area, not stating that there are herds of ppl leaving the state lol. I wasn’t leaning one way or another, but after helping countless people move out of state, these were the top 5 reasons. My next video will be 5 reasons why people are moving to bellingham wa. And 3 of the 5 reasons are the same lol
It would be nice if we had the posh experience of Bellevue and the high-paying jobs of King County. (I'm afraid I have to disagree with you, we need more jobs.) Then it would all make sense. Bellingham is an oddity. it is exhausting.
Whatcom County is about 50/50 blue/red. WA used to be quite red, a lot of folks moved in and brought their politics with them.... its gone down hill since.
Each of the five points are misleading. Example: "5 reasons why people are leaving Bellingham" makes it sound like the population is leaving. The reality is they're not. Fact: Bellingham's population is growing. Politics: places like Ferndale and Lynden aren't politically blue. There's a reason why Ferndale is known locally as Ferntucky. Jobs? Why no mention of the influx of remote workers? There are a lot of jobs that don't require people to live near offices. I've met a lot of people who work remotely up here. Gas? The gas station I go to is amongst the consistently cheapest gas in the Puget Sound area. Expensive food? Maybe if you only shop at Whole Foods. Weather: Less rain where I live than in the greater Seattle region. Crime: it had been a problem but there's strong evidence that this has reversed course. This was even reported on in the national news. I'd take this video with a big grain of salt if I were doing research about moving up this way.
Thank you for your input . My family is thinking of moving there and your responds definitely helps. Definitely sounds better than California Orange county .
Yeah, please leave. We d,on't want outsiders. I'm proud to be one of the washingtonians not wanting non washington in my state. You don't like taxes because we take care of our environment , kids, elderly and wages for workers.
Welcome to the world where every country has theses issues to face, crime, homelessness...etc etc...to attack any problem we have to go at the root of it...why are so many people going homeless and turning to drug....
@livinginbellinghamwa1 ... I know even in my country. Unfortunately, these are the times we live in ..we Cannot allow it to stop our lives and hinder our dreams...
simple, really. It's because they're enabling it....and scoring political points in the process. No rights without responsibilities, freedom is never free.
The city messed up downtown with bike lanes, especially the main thoroughfare Holly Street. BAD IDEA!! P.S. Please tell more people how terrible the weather ALWAYS is. Just awful, bad, unlivable!!! Go somewhere else for God's sake.
We have a fantastic retirement community here in bellingham and whatcom county in general! I highly recommend looking into it more, or reaching out to us if you have anymore questions.
Well, I can take this town off of the list. We want to move as close as possible to the Canadian border (family there), but don't want anything to do with homeless, drug problems, and especially crime. Blaine? We are financially fairly well off and want a retirement condo lifestyle. No more house to manage.

Tons of new affordable homes are being built in Blaine. Living in the area I would honestly say I've never seen any drug/homeless people problems there, either
Nine out of twelve? Hardly. I would say there are three good months out of twelve. I lived in the Puget Sound area for over 30 years and remember just about every 4th of July having total cloud cover and cold temps. The only nice warm weather months are mid July to mid September. And that is a good year.
Im not sure when you last lived here, but our spring thru falls are getting warmer and dryer, as our winters are getting wetter and colder. Last year we had 80 degree weather from May thru September, and October was in the mid 60's. The fall and spring are beautiful when the colors start to change, yes they are wet, but it gives us a break from the sun. This 4th of July was 80 degrees with clear skies and it was amazing. we havent had rain here in almost a month! But every year is different.
Also home taxes are through the roof. $5700. for me this year. Average home. Crazy expensive. All taxes in Washington State are ridiculous. What they do with all that money I have no idea. Our highways including I5 are terrible. This guy is right about the weather. Rain rain and more rain. My son moved to AZ and refuses to come back to Wash.
All major cities in the PNW are nothing, but the same, the same politics, the same issues, the same crimes, the homeless, and drugs. That is the reason why, even though I was making really good money, I moved to Texas.
I disagree with it being said that is a a very blue state, here in Yelm we are very republican as is most of the small towns like Yelm. It is only the cities that are blue.
We have been dominated by Democrat politicians in almost every city. I almost cried when folks voted democrats into office again in 2020 after how they handled covid and the not so wonderful BLM and Antifa destroyers of private property. Please Washingtonians..get educated...try watching you tube podcasters "We the governed" and some others to find out what these politicians are up to. Our local media stations are also left leaning...just like CNN. Maybe we can save Washington .
The Canadians definitely don’t run whatcom county lol. They aren’t down here as much like they were in the past. The dollar is much higher now, and our shopping isn’t great so they start going down south. You’ll see a lot of Canadians at Costco and Trader Joe’s, and the gas stations. But who cares, they help our economy!

But it's not the drugs & homeless. Drugs are an American problem, not a local one, not a blue or red one. Why didn't you mention how gay Bellingham is? Since you're leaning toward politics.😢😢😢
1. I am an immigrant
I heard from a reliable source that they are going to open another Trader Joe's on Guide Meridian in the future.
@@wendylu6939if it's the same source I'm thinking of, it's the old Bed Bath and Beyond building...
Is it minority friendly? I keep hearing ppl saying bad thing about it.
if you mean are people around here anti skin color, generally we dont give a rats ass what your outside color is as long as you bleed red.
No its not. They’ll smile at you at first, but if you’re not a white liberal, you’re an outsider
I find Bellingham to lack culture completely. It’s bleak and the locals are standoffish. It’s like invasion of the body snatchers vibes.
@@elizabeth4914 i agree. And is sad... i am from south america. There is hardly anyone from down there here... they are missing out.
@@rupatrupa7487 yes, because you have a fabulous culture that would be delightful for people to know🥹
@@rupatrupa7487 good!
You should been there in mid 70s. It was magical. I suppose mainly cause I was young. How I miss those days. Really miss the original Tony’s coffee shop.
I LOVE cold, wet , dark and cold. People with Icelandic blood would like it here.
Oh please. It’s expensive everywhere.
I would say a more liberal shade of Red... Not so much hardcore conservatives.
I would say Ferndale and Lynden are more Red...
Great points! Another taboo topic, religion! It appears to be a lot of spiritual darkness follows in the physically dark areas as well. IMO
Yes, move away. More room for those of us who LOVE it. 😍
THank you for this! The petty crime and homelessness is a problem everywhere, not just in bellingham! We have it much less than major cities.
@livinginbellinghamwa1 ...
I know even in my country. Unfortunately, these are the times we live in ..we Cannot allow it to stop our lives and hinder our dreams...
simple, really. It's because they're enabling it....and scoring political points in the process. No rights without responsibilities, freedom is never free.
Food manufacturing ( Nature's Path) in Blaine.
The city messed up downtown with bike lanes, especially the main thoroughfare Holly Street. BAD IDEA!!
P.S. Please tell more people how terrible the weather ALWAYS is. Just awful, bad, unlivable!!! Go somewhere else for God's sake.
How about if you are retired.
We have a fantastic retirement community here in bellingham and whatcom county in general! I highly recommend looking into it more, or reaching out to us if you have anymore questions.
Just to confirm, did you say that Sumas, Lyndon and Ferndale had a “blue” mindset or did you mean red?
Definitely red. Don't come here if your blue
Is the purpose of this video to generate more business for Uhaul by encouraging homeowners to sell their house and move ???
Well, I can take this town off of the list. We want to move as close as possible to the Canadian border (family there), but don't want anything to do with homeless, drug problems, and especially crime. Blaine? We are financially fairly well off and want a retirement condo lifestyle. No more house to manage.
Hi Paul! Blaine is a beautiful area and I highly recommend it, especially Semiahmoo! I’m waiting for a nice day to do a video about Blaine. It is much much smaller than bellingham but it has started to grow with more amenities. Let me know if you would like to chat more 360.220.7975
Blaine is great
Tons of new affordable homes are being built in Blaine. Living in the area I would honestly say I've never seen any drug/homeless people problems there, either
Guess you need to move out of space because once you are on planet earth there no escaping these issues.....Every country has his place here
Remember Blaine is a border town. Most of us end up going to Bellingham for groceries and shopping.
You need a teleprompter
Reason #5: politics. I’m sorry I’d rather be in the freedom of a progressive state than in the oppression of a red state.
Please go. Please.
It's become an overpriced, crime, dope infested toilet?
Also home taxes are through the roof. $5700. for me this year. Average home. Crazy expensive. All taxes in Washington State are ridiculous. What they do with all that money I have no idea. Our highways including I5 are terrible. This guy is right about the weather. Rain rain and more rain. My son moved to AZ and refuses to come back to Wash.
All major cities in the PNW are nothing, but the same, the same politics, the same issues, the same crimes, the homeless, and drugs. That is the reason why, even though I was making really good money, I moved to Texas.
Clickbait.
Democrats.
I disagree with it being said that is a a very blue state, here in Yelm we are very republican as is most of the small towns like Yelm. It is only the cities that are blue.
@@LittlehorseReynolds definitely agree, and I thought I mentioned that? I did say Eastern Washington I thought?!
People in Idaho are not moving to Washington.
I’ll let my clients from Idaho know 😂😂🤦🏽♂️

The Canadians run whatcom county I would suggest not moving there are the state of Washington state
The Canadians definitely don’t run whatcom county lol. They aren’t down here as much like they were in the past. The dollar is much higher now, and our shopping isn’t great so they start going down south. You’ll see a lot of Canadians at Costco and Trader Joe’s, and the gas stations. But who cares, they help our economy!
@@livinginbellinghamwa1 there different laws for us citizens and Canadian people I got pulled over in sumas for a violation but yet a Canadian done the same and the police said the Canadian had different laws than the us citizens
Been here 75 years. Why don't the complainers keep moving along. We liked it before you came and will like it better when you leave. Libs and lefties PLEASE go find a better place to live. Western has kept B'ham mentally immature in social development. Western is nothing more than a holding pen finishing off the current herd. We didn't have homeless living everywhere when there were halfway homes and mental institutions. But that was tooooooo mean. BS! I worked a soup kitchen and food banks for over a decade; sorry I'm more of a no workie; no eatie sort.
Remember the idiot who wanted to rename the Picket Bridge near the P.O.? Good thing he didn't realize there's a picket HOUSE/park. But then he was from Western...........
Reason #1 to stay away now? B'ham is going to become a 'smart city' real quick. We've followed ICLEI since Agenda 21 started... So tired of DEMs, RINOs, and now Marxists like Kamala.
Yeah?
Politics? -> "blue state"?
I left because of the, hold on to something: Racism.
I moved away from San Francisco ( pure woke dysfunction State ) just to find similar woke misery In Washington State.
