In and around Mumbai live nearly 5000 members of an ancient Indian Jewish community with unique customs and culture. In recent centuries their story spans the eras of the British Raj, the independence movement, Zionism and the development of modern India. They are Israelites, not Jews. Hence the title, Bene Israel. They are descended from the House of Israel (the ancient northern tribes), NOT from ben Yehuda (i.e. Yehudim, Jews, ancient southern tribes). Tradition and ignorance often blinds most people from the truth.
