    Here in my Sierra Nevadas, Southern Spain, top soil runs off nowadays, in a rainfall, because the olive groves are flattened so the fruit can be mechanically harvested. Farmers used to drill between with their mulos, and plant the garden veg between olive trees. Win win. Now chemical weed killers mess the whole deal up. If they started using mules again the country would recover in so many ways. But self sufficiency is still seen as poverty living by many Spanish, so, what's happening is its foreigners who are developing ecological living more than locals. Young Spanish in the south less likely to go into farming having seen such hardship in that way of life back thirty /forty years ago.. More people every day. Ain't that a fact. Keeping out of the way of the horse is so important, I appreciate your teachings greatly, saludos, maestro. R

    I totally agree with you Pat. I live in Wisconsin where the Kettle Moraine forest runs. Between southern end and the northern end just about covers a little over half the state. The Kettle Moraine is very hilly, very woodsy but in this state every summer the state is taking logs, as well as cleaning the brush out. They do this so we do not have forest fires. Unlike the state of California where the people seem too be against cleaning the dead trees and brush out. Cause their it is dry as well. Here in May and June it is drier here as well. The state also carries out in the early spring intentional burns to stop the fires from starting on their own. Their is not a spot that the water is not traveling in a down hill direction even flat land drains. It is the city folk that do not have a clue as to what needs to be done. Not a clue! I think sometimes they do not know where their food comes from other than the grocery stores. I have to wonder if they can actually dress themselves in the morning. Well that is the way things are done here pretty much. I do like how you teach the younger people. Like now days they do not teach Civics, nor do they teach history. The way that they teach mathmatics is another world. They do no teach multiplication or division like you and i were schooled. It drives me crazy listening to my daughter telling me how her chilren are being taught. I think were going in reverse and someone has too pull back hard on the reins.🤔😎

    • @youknow9328
      @youknow9328 3 года назад

      Being a prior dirt bike rider/racer and a horseback rider I will say you’re definitely correct. The bikes are much more destructive. Being a firefighter I would also argue that the trails of both can and have stopped small fires so it’s not all bad as some folks are lead to believe. . The forests here are so mismanaged and overgrown anymore that even a small fire gets out of hand very quickly! However lower intensity fires also promote more healthy growth when administered correctly. Unfortunately our forests are probably realistically beyond that point now. thanks to the extreme environmentalists groups out there making that impossible. Their stereotyped name is an oxymoron of sorts to those with any common sense.
      Talking with Pats father one day I discovered the old time ranchers (way before my time) would light fire on the way out while moving the cattle out for the winter. He mentioned how much less brush and more grass was available. Well now we have grass brush and trees and it’s a ladder affect creating the perfect storm for fires. Where as grass bumping into trees isn’t nearly as volatile. Made perfect sense because grass always grows again after fire and the chemicals in the ash do help promote new growth in the smaller plants and grass. I’m sure there weren’t all the houses around back then like now so that was probably easier to do as well. He mentioned the trees weren’t all dead and dying like now pointing to the trees on the hills behind his place. . Being a fireman he questioned why we don’t do that more often. Well .. money for one and lots of environmental hoops to jump through are just a few reasons. Besides money and staffing there are houses everywhere now. . The other main reason is people In positions of power are clueless....Pat identified them as environmentalists lol He nailed it in his explanation completely if you ask me. When a man older than yourself draws in the dirt you know he’s passionate and knowledgeable about the subject at hand and you Best be listening! My dad used to do that and when he did I knew it was time to shut up and listen because reality was about to be spoken! More people need to think this way and be this way if you ask me!

    This channel is awesome because we get history lessons and cowboy wisdom in addition to horse sense. But I want to comment on population, world population is decreasing slowly. People are having less kids and young people dying too soon is way up (that’s a topic for another day). I had a. Theory that working in agriculture would be highly profitable some day since less people work making our food every year. It seems that with the decreases in world population that the situation is evening itself out so to speak. I left my 2nd career (airline pilot after retiring from the military) to farm and ranch. I’m only surviving the current economic crisis because I have a military retirement pension.

    He states that most people stay in the horses mouth with the reins is because they are scared. Though some are like that, my experience has been more that people stay on the mouth because they are not paying attention to their horse while riding, especially trail riding. This is because they are to busy talking to other riders! Some others, just accept not staying connected to their horse to enhance both horse and rider relationship. They are content riding a horse that doesn't buck them off or run away.

      We have to get past this kind of attitude. Environmentalists say much the same thing about ranchers. It has to stop and we have to begin a dialogue where both sides LISTEN to what the other has to say. It’s not good enough any longer to throw our hands in the air and claim that the “other side” just doesn’t get it. As far as I know, the “other side” doesn’t really exist. It’s all just “us.”

    What you are talking about is called Regenerative farming. When the problems each ecosystem has is assessed and the system modified to match, it has worked very well in every state it has been tried in. There is a man named Greg Judy (hope that I got his name right) who has perfected what he calls "mob grazing" which is 400 cows on one hector of land for 24 hours. Then the cows are moved on to the next hector. The cows are not on the land long enough to tromp the grass down, but, that many cows put millions of hoof prints and fertilizer on the malnourished grass. This is what the buffalo used to do for most of the United States. Our land was rich and fertile back then.
    Lucky for us bad science, big agriculture, and lots of baby making has created the mess this country is in. Scientist all know that the only way to fix this mess is to get rid of farting cows.
    Let's all eat those eco-friendly fake meat burgers because they are sustainable.

    I sure wish I could get so,e of these northern California peeps on board with the grazing....it makes so much sense. But then again, they are pretty focused on making cows the scapegoat (scapecow?) And even their flatulence is adding to climate change. What produces the most carbon emissions in the world? Rotting vegetation in forests. If the envirodorks were serious wouldn't they have a plan to deal with the dead and dying vegetation? Of course not, because that would be work and not a bunch of jaw jacking with their hands in our pockets 🙄 ugh.
