  • Learn how create and access perspectives for Power BI Datasets. Perspectives allow you to configure the visibility of all dataset fields per perspective to fit multiple audience needs. This is really useful for more complex models where multiple audiences would only need to see a subset of the fields contained in the master dataset. Unlock these secrets using Tabular Editor, and composite modeling. Tune in to learn more!

I've been using this with AAS very often, didn't know it can also be used with Shared Datasets! Great! 😊

Are there also possibilities with security restrictions? I have a big Sales master dataset that also contains Payables data. Our Sales BI guy needs the same dataset but without the payables fact and measures. Now I just made a copy of the master dataset and removed the payables dataset. However, this leads to double maintenance.

This is just for visibility of fields. Any security implementations would either need to be with RLS or OLS separately from this :)

This is very useful for passing on data sets to less accomplished users.
Perspectives exist within the Excel Data Model (Power Pivot) on the Advanced tab without using Tabular Editor. But unfortunately they only work with the Data model in diagram or data view. As soon as you start to create a Power Pivot table or chart all the hidden fields and tables re-appear. And I am guessing that it is creating Pivot tables or charts where inexperienced users want simpler choices.
I find it much better to simply "Hide from client tools" those items I don't want to appear. That means you can only have one perspective per model. But it does produce what I want: all the fields and tables in the model, but only the ones the user will use when creating tables. This can be done simply with right clicks on the diagram model view.
Power BI Data model does the same.

Hi there! Thanks for your "perspective". :)
Having a master list of fields that are "visible in report view" is definitely something you want to do as well. But having different cuts of the fields list for different users goes a long way in making the dataset more scalable as well.
I also try to avoid using local PowerPivot models these days, as it's running an older and less efficient version of the Vertipaq engine. Vs using published Power BI datasets/perspectives hosted in a Power BI workspace, and then live connected inside of an excel workbook. :)
