Nice video will try it, by the way, it might be easier marking the outside hole, but then cutting the inner hole first so it's not as fiddly trying to hold the small washer by itself
Sir can we use two drag washer in the place of old one drag washer. If we would use two washer replacing one old washer from low profile baitcasting reel, so what would happen? Will it work smoothly?
I don't think you can. Drag washers get too thick and you may not be able to adjust the drag. That's why you need to select same or similar thickness washers when you replace with carbontex.
Yes it does. If too thick you won't loosen up the drag. If too thin you won't tighten up the drag. Check your washer thickness first and get one similar in thickness.
Calipers are available from hardware store. Make sure you buy straight point caliper and not curved one. Curved one is hard to sharpen the ends. Good luck.
hi if i have a 0.7mm carbontex washer that i can't fit in my reel due to the original being 0.5mm can i sand it down to that thickness ? will it affect the washers performance in any way ?
+Dol K. Mato I don't see why not. But have you tried 0.7mm washers? Some reels will work fine. You may not be able to loosen up the drag right off though. Some reels, you can't loosen the drag at all or the side plate won't fit. If that's the case you can try. I've never done it, though.
+dDerDol Man i tried fitting the metal washers with thr new 0.7mm carbontex and they just won't fit . i can't close the side plate on my reel unless i change back to the original 0.5mm washers .was just wondering if sanding down the 0.7mm washers to 0.5mm would affect its performance in any way .
+Dol K. Mato If you look at the carbontex, there are grids/grooves. I don't know if these grids have anything to do with performance. If you sand, you are sanding these grids down. In my opinion it won't make any difference on performance if you run them dry - ie no grease. Try. If it affects the performance then you can always replace them.
Dol K. Mato That's what people say but I've seen flat carbon drag washers. People believe, grooves suppose to hold grease. I don't know if that's true or not, that's why I suggested running dry.
Thanks! If you're from the States, best place is from smoothdrag.com You ask for a sheet. If you're from Australia, www.downriggershop.com.au/carbontex-drag-washers.html Generally, if multi-disk drag, 0.5mm thickness suits. If single washer drag 1mm sheet. It all depends on the reel.

I don't see why not. As long as the sheet gets abraded with sharp object. Do carbontex have fibreglass layer? I thought what I have here is same as carbontex.
dDerDol Man It depends on where you get it from. Smoothdrag says they don't have any fiberglass in their carbontex. The carbontex I got from ebay says they have a fiberglass core just like the Penn drag washers. Btw, I got a "Precision ECG Caliper" from home depot and it didn't turn out well. It didn't do a clean cut and the carbon fiber ended up being loose. Maybe the carbontex I got was not very good or maybe due to the pin point of the caliper. I will have to get a spring divider caliper like yours to find out. I will keep you posted.
Yes, commonly used by many people including myself. But this method has advantages on: 1. it can cut in any size - drag washers come in different sizes, and 2. it cuts the hole in the middle accurately. This is very important if you want smooth drag. This is the main reason I have come up with this method.
Of course, if I am spending someone elses' money I would buy the kits ;) But not with my money. If you have 30+ reels, buying a carbon sheet for a $15 and cutting out the drags is the way to go. 1 or 2 reels, go with kits.

It's Calipers

sp did you have to sand down the washers on this reel too? before adding the carbon drags? just wondering
Not this time. The washers have been already ground during previous service.

Should be able to find one from a hardware store.
