Unleashing the Power of C-Log 3 on the Canon R6 Mark II

- If you own any of the recent mirrorless cameras from Canon, like the R5, R6, R6 mark ii, R7, R8 etc. You probably have access to this CLOG 3. This feature allows you to maximize your camera's sensor output by delivering 10 bit color and a wider dynamic range (10-12 stops of light!).
But if you aren't sure how to work with these files, it may not be worth it. So in this video I go over everything you need to know when shooting in C-Log 3 so that you can create cinematic footage with your mirrorless canon cameras.
Cheers

why didn't i see this video when typing C LOG 3 earlier!!! the most easy to follow video ive seen to date!!! this needs to have millions of views!! ive been looking for this REC 709 thing for so long and havent had anyone point it out in a video. Thank You
Glad I could help :) thank you for the kind words, it means a lot.
The rec709 file took me awhile to find and to even choose the right one. So ik what you mean haha. Happy shooting :)
Dude your videos are straight to the goddamn point. Thanks for not drowning us in a coffee monologue and lake intro. I've been hesitant in shooting in Clog 3 on my R6ii because I hadn't found this lut but I'll test it and come back later with joy. Keep up the great content man, REALLY love what you're dishing us. Subbed!!
That’s my goal with the tutorials, straight to the point and concise. Glad I could help out man!
If there is anything you want to learn more about do let me know. Cheers!
Just gained yourself another subscriber. Very clear, informative, and easy to follow. Thank you for taking the time to make this.
That’s the goal with these tutorials - glad I could help :)
Excellent explanation - thanks for keeping it simple and direct.
That’s my goal, glad I could help out :)
Very helpful. Thank you so much.
Glad I could help
Very helpful. Just starting, out this video was exactly what I needed. 🙏🇮🇪.
I’m glad I could help!
Very informative. No one tells us like this. Thanks a lot.
You’re welcome, happy to help
I think you missed to mention that in order to get the most out of C-Log 3 you need to shoot in ISO 800 (according to Canon manual) and for this you're most likely need an ND filter as during the daylight ISO 800 is waaay to high.
That is true. I mentioned it in my follow up video on the Canon R6 II. Because 800 iso is definitely too bright for daylight.
Cheers!
very helpful. Thanks Bruno.
You’re welcome
Nice short and clear 😊❤
Thank you
@@BrunoPozo4Real The way you explaining is so amazing just keep it up the good work trust me you will be one of the top RUclipsr’s.
I'm just starting the topic of filming on the C R6MII. I've only seen two of your videos - one about AF and the other about coloring videos in Premiere pro (I had a problem with coloring because I don't know PP yet and you explained what to do with what to make the colors look good). They are great, even though they are very short. Are you planning to record a longer video on these two topics? How to set up the CR6MII exactly and how to best process videos in Premiere PRO?
Congratulations on the great materials on this topic!
Thank you for the kind words.
I do have a full guide on how to setup clog3 for cinematic video here.
ruclips.net/video/r6u8fBEQ_sA/видео.htmlsi=V-eYSKOZ7ylerlko
As for color grading I only have the short tutorial, but I can work on a detailed guide later.
Is there a preferred ISO when shooting c-log 3 on the Mark II? Doesn't look like it has dual native ISO. I found a video that mentions 1600 and 3200 has noticeably lower noise. But shooting on a sunny day at 1600!?!? I meant I have ND filters but dear god. I guess I just need to do my own test at this point.
The base ISO is 800 for clog 3. And for Canon cameras, doubling the ISO is cleaner than going in between. So i stick to 800, 1600, 3200, 6400 etc.
And yes if you shoot outdoors at 800 you will need an ND filter or to close the aperture, crank the shutter etc.
Hope this helps.
That grey card you showed looks like it would be great for a neutral grey drone launch pad which I’ve always wanted so I could set exposure/white balance on takeoff. Can you provide a link? Thanks!
Sure thing Bill. Mine folds and isnt sturdy so idk if that is an issue. But you can always see related items and see if there is a better version:

Beautiful video! So informative and straight to the point... Thanks! Love the zebra examples! Perfect. I actually learned something useful today!
Just a question, isn't the R6 MkII capable of shooting proxy files parallel to main files?
Glad I could be helpful!
The only proxy files Ive seen available for the R6 MkII, is when using an external recorder and shooting 6k. Then an option for internal proxy recording is available.
Otherwise i havent seen proxies anywhere
no dount clog3 is great way to improve upon the already-great video capabilities of this camera. do you know of a way to shoot/retain CLOG3 settings while capturing video in 'photo' mode? i do a decent amount of hybrid shooting, and would love to find a way to do this. not having any luck utilizing C1-C3, but likely i'm overlooking something here
I no longer have my R6 so I can’t check for you. But I don’t think so. Since the video settings are limited when in photo mode. Sorry I can’t be more helpful.
I have a R6mkII and mostly capture birds, other animals and scenic views not human faces. For that reason I find false color and the histogram easier to use than Zebras. I reconfigured the DOF preview button to turn it on and off when capturing video in CLog3.
It would be much easier if Canon would allow capture in Clog3 but output Rec 709 with option of overlaying Zebras or False color in the EVF and back display with live histogram based in the output color space.
Yeah I hate how you cant do both simultaneously. Or at least switch between those settings quickly.
I'm confused on how to actually apply the lut to the adjustment layer? What did you click to input the lut on the layer?
with the adjustment layer selected, I open the lumetri color tab and it should be in the basic adjustments tab, input lut. from there I have to select the lut from my computer. So try to save the LUT file somewhere where you will find it everytime. I'll make a short to show how I do this, and link it to you when I'm done with it!
@@BrunoPozo4Real can u please send me the short too
Quick, easy and infomative! Thats a subscribe from me! Thank you!
You’re very welcome :) cheers!
So, what's the difference between the 33 grid, 65 grid, and 17 grid?!
Its technical but it has to do with how the detailed the lut is calculating the color/light in the file.
So the higher the number typically the better.
Im obviously being an idiot here but can you help - Ive downloaded the LUT you recommend from both Canon and your link - I click on the document file ( 1.2mb ) but it wont open ? How does it work?
Many thanks ( Im a new subscriber and find your vids great! )
You don’t open the file as a document. You upload it in your editing software that will apply it to your footage.
Best of luck!
@@BrunoPozo4Real thanks buddy for the quick reply
@@DavidBrown-qx2vs no sweat!
Thanku fot this video. I just want to know how much dynamic range canon clog3 offers? With r6mk2, Will it hold up to sony a7m4 with log profiles?
The Canon R6 mark ii Clog-3 has about 13 stops of dynamic range and so does the A7m4 with S Gamut Cine and Slog-3
Can you please share the link for those official canon luts? I can’t find them on their website
So this link is the support page for the r6ii, but this works with any camera you have. Scroll down to downloads and make sure you put in your OS info and then the lut folder will appear.
www.usa.canon.com/support/p/eos-r6-mark-ii
Hello I have a question, when I put the technical conversion lut for the right color and then I put a creative, the color comes out ugly, but when I put no conversion and I put only the creative the image comes out quite nice , do you know why, and then what are the bars on the right and left in the histogram
THANKS
I have found that if you add a creative lut on top of the conversion, you need to reduce its’ intensity to make it look nice.
But sometimes going straight to creative lut works best. Just see which you prefer.
As for the bars on the side of the histogram. They are the lower and upper limit of what brightness value the camera can capture.
Hope this helps, cheers!
thanks
@@BrunoPozo4Real
hey man on the r6m2 support / download section theres no look up table option. can you link your already downloaded luts to this comment?
To have the Luts displayed you need to select your OS and version in the drop down menu. Otherwise their files don’t show up, it’s annoying ik.
Here is a link to both the Mirrorless LUTS and the Cinema LUTs for Canon

With my new r6 Mark II finding this video about Proxies was what I needed as my machine bogged down so bad. However, in the past when working with 8 bit video that I shot at 60 fps intending to use slow motion.....I would modify my clips by interpreting them to 24fps. When I pulled these modified clips to my timeline they would,of couse be im slo-mo.
When I try to do this with my 60fps clips that I have created proxies for...they wont play in slow motion on my timeline. They play at full speed and stop part way through the clip.
I dont know if I described this issue in a manner that makes sense, I sure would like to figure it out. I shoot alot of video for youth sports and slo-mo is something I use frequently in high light clips...Thanks
I haven’t had this issue but ive heard of it. Unfortunately I don’t know the solution. I’d google something like “proxy files not playing in slow motion”
You have to tell the workflow to interpret thos 60fps files to 24.
Otherwise, just make a keyboard shortcut for "set speed duration" i think is the term.... And you can set it to 60-70% for slow mo. Or whatever % you find works for your footage.
This is how i edit my files. I have everything on a 24 timeline and i color code my 24 and 60fps files in the bin. Then drag and drop everything to the timeline.
At 100% speed, I will scrub thru and make cuts and move them up a layer. When im done. I grab all the files from the 2nd layer and copy to a new seq . These are all the usable cuts i want to work with. Then i select all, change speed to 65% and hit the "close to gap" to collapse all the clips together.
I wouldnt want to scrub so much footage already in slow mo, feels like that would take forever 🤣
I use a stream deck with custom buttons for premier pro that makes things SUPER easy.
I see you're using windows. How are you getting these files to play? Premier says I don't have an HEVC codec on my machine. Where do I get it ?
I switched to Mac and I don’t remember 100%. But I believe windows asked me to download an hevc codec thing to open in Premiere. I’d double check on google tho. Cheers
@@BrunoPozo4Real mixed results on the paid hevc codec on Microsoft store. Same for HEIF image formats. What a bummer
@@abhishekshah11sorry. I would def continue to google a solution.
Hi there! how to know whether its 17grid, 33grid or 65grid? and if its 3dlut or 1D? Oh noticed u mentioned the 33grid looks the best!
It will be in 3Dlut folder and 33 and 65 grid look the best, apparently 65 is better. Cheers!
@@BrunoPozo4Real Also damn the proxy pro tip didn't know that existed always wondered how to fix drop frames when playing back on premiere!
Lastly one more thing which is a step further, even after applying Canon's LUT it still feels flat could u perhaps make a video on additional creative LUT to color correct the color?
@@AKSKMY Sure thing, I can do a follow up. I'm glad this video was helpful :)
in davinci resolve unpaid version when i try to import clog3 file in windows laptop its not working but in macbook IOS it opens
do you have any solution for it ?
Interesting. I am not sure why that’s the case sorry. Maybe windows needs a driver??
when your filming in c-log but cinema gamut do you stilll choose r709 lut? or is it best to film in r709 then use r709 lut? steve
Yes.
Rec709 is the output, cinema gamut refers to the input from the camera.
I believe the lut name is clog_widedr_cinema gamut_to_rec709
Hope this helps
Why isn’t my zebra settings coming up? Each time I set it to zebra pattern 1 and exit it defaults back to zebra settings off
That is strange. If it’s on it might just not be hitting the percent range you set. What did you set it to?
Good afternoon, do you happen to know how I can view the thumbnails of the files recorded in Clog 3 in Windows 10?
When you change the file explorer view to thumbnails, is an image not showing up?
Are there any luts for Mac ? I can't find any on the website
yes on the canon support page for your camera (It is not on all cameras, but I do know the R6, R6ii, and R5 have this lut on support).
Select your OS - Mac in this case, and in the drop down menu below it is called : "Canon lookup table Version 201911"
Hope this helps!
@@BrunoPozo4Real It did ! Forgot to select what OS I was on.
@@obiobi21 ahh yea, it's a little subtle tab so I feel you on that.
So do you use the rec709 lut before or after grading?
Before color grading. Always do the color correction then grading
Cheers
Can we edit C-log in Filmora or Movavi?
Based on a short google search of filmora, you definitely can. Any tool that allows for color grading can change the Clog footage to look good
I was told that there was a dedicated folder in premiere for downloading the R6 Mark 2 LUT's. How do you make it so Premiere can find them?
You can put luts in a dedicated folder that premiere has, but I could never get that to work. So I just select the lut manually in a folder I have saved elsewhere.
Does the R8 have c log 3?
Yes it does!
what is base iso for c log
Clog’s base iso is 400
Thank You 402 Like
You’re welcome
White people may be at 55% on the Zebra scale but not all people are. You generalized this point too much. People of different skin tones require a change on the zebra scale, people of darker skin tones the zebra is usually lower. You should update the video to state this. Thanks for all the hard work.
This is true. I want to do a skin tone IRE test for sure.
And my recommendations have changed since this. For C-log 3 I like skin tones closer to 60-70% IRE for light skin tones.
I’ll definitely update with more details about skin tones tho. Thanks for the comment and support :)
Clog3 sucks…. Like zero dr
I wish it was better too, but it sure is nicer than the defaul color profiles for me :)
Yeah, even the R5c is bad. Hoping the firmware update that’s come in will enable see log 2. That might help get more dynamic range.
@@rMr.big13 Yeah I know, I wish Clog 2 was more universal but I guess it helps them make sales on those cinema cameras :')
Rec709 if you're output is destined for HD. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rec._709
I’m not sure what this is suggesting.
