- Reflecting on my experiences and comparing/contrasting Drum Corps International with USMC Boot Camp. I've wanted to make this video for quite some time and finally got around to it!

can confirm. cadets dont sleep. if we got to a housing site at 5 in the morning, we would be on the field by 7 or 8. 2 hours on the floor.
@@EMCproductions yep. hopkins said that all the time. i never listened to him anyway. he wasnt my tech or caption head so he was just a big ball of worthless words whenever he talked anyway.

Same was true when I marched Cadets 25 years ago. We'd get 8.5 hours between the time the bus leaves the previous night's show until breakfast the next morning. Typically we'd leave after retreat around 11:00pm, get to the next housing site around 3am or 4am and breakfast would be at 7:30am with rehearsal at 8:30am. A few times a week I would not sleep when I arrived at the new housing site, especially if we got there late, and I would scout out the are around the school for places to buy drinks, junk food, and cigarettes because smoking and running around the field at 200 bpm really went well together.
A "day off" was more or less just a regular reheaersal day but they would drive us to whatever cool city we were in or water park around 4pm instead of going to a show.
Having marched Cadets last year, we have a policy where we have to get "8 hours of sleep" but that includes a portion of the bus rides. So for the most part, it was 50-75 percent of the bus ride counted towards sleep. So for a 10 hour bus ride (the maximum length allowed) we still had to be given at least 30 minutes of floor time
Although, I also know that that policy is change from when GH was in charge which was pretty much get off the bus and start rehearsing no matter the length of the bus ride

It was the same when I marched Cadets in the 90s but they would shave the time a little. Say we needed to be on the buses at 11 after a show but the buses didn’t leave until 11:30, we would still be up at 7am. Most nights we would arrive at the housing site around 4am and get about 3-4 hours on the floor.
I was in the hornline but I know many nights the drum bus would continue rehearsing on their pads for a while after departure.
Rich Daley *Every* night, not most nights. They called it chopping out, as I recall. I guess it helps them unwind or something? I dont know I was hornline. After a while it just became like a gentle rain on a cabin roof. Except for that one pit guy who sat *right* behind me who wanted to be battery, so it was gentle rain plus this guy. My last year I switched to horn bus. Would have switched right the heck back if Id marched again. It was nice not having to listen to the radio, though, but I did crack up at our driver constantly cussing at the guy who drove (drives?) the drum bus, now knowing she had been doing that every night for *years*, but I had no idea because she *never* says a thing on the radio.
I didnt march Cadets but we were affiliated with them at the time (blech) and I remember Hopkins saying "You can sleep when youre dead" and I was thinking yeah no thanks. Guy was so skeezy.

Yes, we never slept in the Cadets, at all. Boot camp was sweet getting 8 hours every night, with exception of firewatch. Great video!

@@cheath432 I was just thinking the same thing - if we ever got 5 hrs (okay it was 1970 so days were still 35 hrs long, before the change in 1976) it was an event. I don't believe I had 3 eight hour sleep nights in 4 years and 2 mos, although a lot of that was self-inflicted.
Raymond Fallon yeah I recently went through (comparatively) in 2012 and I maybe got on average 4 or 5 hours of sleep a night. Not to include fire guard or the drill sergeants playing their games in the middle of the night
With no disrespect whatsoever (just the opposite, in fact) to EMCproductions, the comments to this video have been as good as the video. The drum corps community (including the young "bandos" that love DCI with their hearts and souls) are truly the greatest people on Earth. I read through the comments to more "political" videos and I worry about our society - you just don't see that on these threads. I love this activity.
One is the most mentally and physically draining experiences you'll ever endure. The other is just boot camp.

Great video! I marched Cadets in the 90s and agree with you about the food. It was always really good. Sometimes the host school would provide dinner for us too.
While I agree that drum corps techs are usually nice to you off the field, they could be pretty intense during rehearsals. They were probably more mean back in the day and did stuff they can’t do now. For example, I remember I missed my dot and was way outside a form after a free form during a show and the instructor made me stand on my spot for 30 minutes during lunch the next day. Good times.

I ate about 3 peanut butter sandwiches (three separate slices for lunch AND dinner,) plus other food, there. Loved it. Greg was the cook, right? big tall nice guy. in 97 we um, had an accident, the food truck bumped one of those big yellow poles in a parking lot and it had to stay behind to get fixed. no food truck? Greg and co. rushed out and went to a store and bought like ALL the milk (and other things) they had, and we still had breakfast. food truck arrived a few hours later. Loved Greg. #rip
We definitely got more sleep in basic than I did when I marched genesis
I marched Genesis in 2017. The bus ride counted to like 90% of our "sleep". By mid July we were all ridiculously exhausted. Towards the end of July, one of our brass caption heads asked us one day why we were so sluggish at music block, had to straight up tell him that Magonigal wasn't letting us sleep. Had pretty good floor time the last few weeks after that.

1 year DCI 1 year DCA and 21 in the Army. Drum corps teaches you how to follow direction and have discipline. You will be ahead of about 95% of the folks in your basic training company, although you will be doing pushups because of them :)
sounds like that's one thing that sucks about getting used to kicking ass and having high standards, others aren't necessarily on par and a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link.

I was sleep deprived, constantly getting yelled at or getting blamed for something I was suppose to do that no instructor told to me to do my rookie year.

When I marched with the Blue Stars in 2016, the staff forgot about a time zone change. When we got to the housing site we had like 25 minutes of sleep after a long bus ride, and then had a full rehearsal day. Luckily, they cut one hour off at the end to make up for it lol
This was a really fascinating video. I'm currently a junior in high school playing alto saxophone. I want to be a high school band director/music teacher and I've considered doing either Drum Corps (I'd probably learn a brass or auxiliary percussion) and Marine Band. It was really informative and fascinating to hear from someone who has done both.

As an Army veteran: you're a Soldier first and your MOS second. I really appreciate this video. I didn't get to do DCI (auditioned and failed at euphonium before trombones were allowed), but I did march in college. I think this comparison is great. Marching band is grueling and people outside of the sport are under the illusion that it's just easy peasy and no sweat. There's a great study somebody (I don't remember who) did that compared the body rhythmics of a marcher with a traditional athlete and the intensity of adrenaline and physical exertion was more in the marcher than the athlete.

I like this, a little. I did drum corps, prior to DCI, and I did the US Air Force including a year in Viet Nam and a year and a half flying over it. I dig drum corps - it has been an incredible part of my life. Nothing, ever, has ever been as all-consuming as military service. I know that the video is about basic and DCI tour, and I get it - I loved (upper case LOVED) DCI tour, which I got to do as an instructor when I came back. The two are simply not comparable. Much respect to you jarheads - some of the craziest mothers I ever served with. Much respect to your DCI marchers - unbelievable dedication and skill. In my humble opinion, not real similar - neat premise though.
@@EMCproductions Here's a funny thing - I had orders for the band, too. During basic I messed up and did well on a language aptitude test - they red-lined the orders and sent me to language school. Life turns on a dime. I don't regret a day - okay - a couple of days here and there - maybe a month or two - but life happens while you're making plans. I've raised 3 music teachers, a dance teacher, a banker (trumpet), and a nutritionist. Life is good. BTW, service is service - the military needs music, too. Gotta march, dude - out of step it doesn't work. Just don't do right foot first, Cadet style - no bueno for the military.
@@EMCproductions We could tell some stories. Keep the LRLL RLRR going. You've served the world well doing DCI - every service member serves, whether it's with mallets, or an M16 (is it an M4, now? I know you jarheads, including musicians, sleep with them for basic and AIT. I needed the guy next to me to shoot my target for me to qualify. We didn't do assault weapons on Long Island during the 60s - they may now. Hang in there - keep the videos coming.

I did come up with one parallel - when we would fly RC135s down to the Gulf of Tonkin from Okinawa, the sleep policy was very similar to bus sleep (a concept I never really understood - I always thought BD had it right - give the corps as close to 8 hrs on the floor as possible - you're asking the kids to absorb an awful lot of material in a rehearsal - having a functional brain always seemed like a good idea) but we were alloted 2 hrs in a bunk for a 30 hr mission, plus 3 hrs down and back sitting in a rigid upright chair. Bus sleep to the N'th power. Oh to be 21 years old again! Not a lot of sleep in basic either, between scrubbing latrines at 1am and getting up at 5am.

I really enjoyed the critique of the differences. As a spouse of someone who was in the Air Force and went through basic training (in 1971), it was interesting to hear your explanation of both disciplines.
When I did my first year of corps, we were a small enough group that we only used one tour bus, and so we had literally no room to stretch out on long bus rides (especially the 15 hour bus ride from Indianapolis back to the group's hometown). There would be kids sleeping on the bus floor, under seats, across the aisle, it was mad.
After our longest bus ride during tour, which was 9 hours, we arrived at our housing site at 5am, the drum major came into the gym and said "lights out is in 15 minutes, wake up is gonna be at 7:30." At that point we all died a little inside.

This was very well thought out. I normally don'y like videos like this (there are just so many comparison videos on RUclips), but this is something I've wondered for the longest time. It honestly makes me want to join the military again. Thanks for the quality content.
At 9:20, I was thinking about my experience with the mattresses at Emerald Bay scouting ranch, those mattresses were A. exposed to the elements in 20 year old steaming canvas tents full of bugs, were dusty, dirty, and worn. B. the cots were rusty, unstable, some had termite eaten wooden boards underneath. C. the floor of your tent was a termite eaten wood skit.
I had forgotten about the t "blouse off the body aye sir!"
But then it triggered something really deep in my head.

So far all high school marching band has taught me is to suck it up and just full change on the bus with everyone else packed in. Fend for yourself.
Fantastic video! Before watching this I wasn’t sure how comparable the two were but I guess there’s plenty of things that are somewhat similar.
I did not eat well my 1st 2 years...
Then we got a nutritionist! And money...
I also found that by day 6 or 7 of training, the pain would just stop. It would gradually suck more each day until that point, but knowing it was ending soon helped me mentally the last few year's.
Cool video man. I marched Drum Corps in 1986, 1987, and 1990 with the Spartans from Vancouver, Washington. I was from Oregon though. Then in 1991 I went into the Marines and served 8 years.

Being trans, being able to shower around other people and like everyone else was comfortable around me naked was absolutely fantastic and really helped me feel more comfortable with myself it was amazing

Yeah my section tech was not so friendly but a genuinely great guy. Really reminded me of those drill instructors in those old boot camp videos I used to watch!
"Boot camp is 13 weeks" but then you're in a contract after that. After DCI you can go home lol
the extra-cronchy back is kind of a trade off in DCI. If you do hornline, you get a less cronchy back. If you do battery, you have ultra-cronch, but you get to play the really cool shit.
This made me feel better about missing out on DCi. I wouldn’t have lasted 1 week.

At 7:19 we had the same thing in drum corps. The left everything rule. 1000's of push up was done each season for forgetting to use the left on everything we do.
My friend who graduated from my high school marched with the cadets this past year and yes it’s true they get less than 2 hours of sleep.
At Colts we try to get 7 1/2 hours, with the idea of bus sleep being the same as stated in the video
For my corps we spend 11 months doing drum corps stuff BD gives us actually 5 hours because not everyone can fall asleep fast

Im in CAP and Marching band. So I understand how this would work. I Hope.
Also, Marines and Band aids have the same general humor. Being a Marine and the band in high school (band kids are band kids whether it's high school or DCI)
dci members arent like band kids; you get ridiculed for being a bando. It's a lot like a seasoned marine vs a boot. Certain corps have more of a bando culture though, like crown.

Boot camp is a joke these days. I was in navy boot camp and it was almost a pointless 9 weeks. DCI actually does push you and teach you

I did 68750 push ups in 91, I was 15 years old riding a bmx bike thirty two miles across state lines to all days. Then ride back home at 9 o clock. The fat bodies making it through the depot now days wouldn't have a prayer in hell doing that. I'm not bitchin it was a great time.
the part about gaining weight after drum corps was so true for me. I went from working out pretty much all day every day to playing warcraft all day every day.......
The thing about the food in boot camp is that while it may be good and plentiful, you don't have the option for seconds and you don't have time to enjoy it either. Remember, when the Guide's done, you're all done and since the Guide is responsible for essentially for setting the pace of eating, he/she is not going to take their sweet time eating and risk having the DIs come down on him/her for eating too slowly. Because of that, you don't get to take your time either since you don't know how long it's going to take the Guide to finish their food, not to mention that you are not allowed to talk to anybody while you're eating, you're their to eat and that's it. When I was in, my DIs had a little saying that summed things up quite nicely, "Eat now, taste later".

Kristopher Ring bluecoats let us have full air mattresses, we just had a rule that it had to be full size or smaller, and you couldn’t pump in the sleeping area past lights out
That schedule part hit me hard. Carrying quads at band camp is the worst shit I’ve ever had to do
And the worst part is when it’s your first season ever in a marching band and BAM! You get hit with those babies when you’re super skinny and can barely lift 30 pounds 😂

I thought my high school teacher was SO mean - until we marched 6 miles up and down hill black top in the El Paso heat on Thanksgiving day... oh my lord, I was SO glad I had listened to the older kids who bade me wear shorts and crop tank under my thermal uniform (we lived in the foothills of the mountains, and games were COLD.) THEN I saw the wisdom in putting us through daily calisthenics and strength training en masse until Sunbowl tourney and parade...
Which year did you March crown? Also which drum did you play and how many years did you march?
