Have you ever wondered about Color theory in Film?
You film color palette matters to the audience. It’s not only aesthetic, it also affects storytelling. This video takes you through director’s choices when it comes to colorization in their film works and how those colors get different emotional responses from the audience.
We break down color in TV, movie, and use film theory to extract meaning from specific choices. There are three components of color.
They are:
Hue - which is the color.
Saturation - the intensity of the color
Brightness - the brightness of the color
With just hue, saturation, and brightness (HSB for short) you can create a complex color scheme rather simply, and go from being just another director to a being a true visual artist.
By utilizing hue, saturation, and brightness you can precisely identify the right color create certain feelings in your audience.
Bright images often seem lively and exciting. Darker images often seem dramatic. And on it goes…
But rules were made to be broken.
What are some of your favorite moments of color in media and entertainment?

I absolutely love the resources you guys and gals provide us newbie filmmakers. Thanks for posting.
Definitely! We'll keep making them as long as you keep checking them out. More great videos and resources in the works, stay tuned. :)
It's been 4yrs you posted this comment , can you tell me how I can learn it
I'm a simple man, I see colors, I press like
karravolin colour makes everything
I’m a simple woman I see river phoenix I press like
karravolin riverrrr
I'm neither simple NOR a man. I am a complex, nuanced, exquisite, decadent, and exotic dish, with beautiful layers of crunchy corn chips, fragrant and tender beef, succulent and juicy tomatoes, crisp lettuce shreds, fresh avocado, zesty sour cream and bitey, matured aged cheddar shavings. I am iconic. I am versatile. I am memorable.
I am...
_ELEGANT NACHOS_
I thought this saying is relevant only in Russian
i like specific colors used in movies to enhance their mood. but i kinda feel that they are overdoing it nowadays. i think, it is much better when it is subtle than bold. i am forced into a specific mood and only see that color. sometimes movies are too dark, too bright, too mono or uniform, that the trick kills it rather than enhances the movie.
Yep, definitely. Who overdoes it in your opinion?
hm actually a lot of movies. but since you used mad max fury in your video, this one is definately overdone in my opinion. way too orangy, almost juicy :) especially compared with the mad max movies with mel gibson. while it was easy for me to feel the sand, dryness etc in those movies, i had a hard time to feel it in mad max fury. it is almost cartoony if it makes sense. maybe that was even the intention. but i didn't like it. a better example for using a specific color ist great expectations from 1998. while you could see the color green in almost every scene, it is used symbolic and therefore is placed where it tries to point on something. far better is the trilogy three colors by krzysztof kieslowski. but since the movies are based on the colors and therefore using them in the movie is obligatory, i chose great expectations, because the color is enhancing/underlining the story. btw, i am not a movie expert at all. so i could be wrong. but it is just what i see and feel as an average viewer.
The movie 300 uses color badly. On the flip side, the series Spartacus uses color grading immaculately.
I personally like the extreme, but not everyone use it correctly
TBH, The Matrix overdid by enough to ruin the experience. You never stop noticing how unnecessary it is. Always kept me from completely immersing into the world. Also, coding screens hadn't looked green for decades by that time so it was kind of a weird thing to do. But I think they did it to hide the limits of computer effects of the day. To that end, it's entirely forgivable.
You translated many pages from a book about the basics of colour grading in less than 5 minutes... Many thanks!!
I used to be an artist, seeing many color theory videos, studying it. but i don't think none ever worked for me. that's why i gradually stopped drawing. i loved painting a picture inside someone's head, telling a story, but i got bored. so, i went on a movie binge. i fell in love with the nature, because you just don't paint with the colors (visually), there are many other aspects. camera movements, resolutions. more importantly, studying art made it easier for me to study film, and studying film made me a much better artist.
something i'd like to add:
you can also add much more contrast to the film. not just throughout the film. in one frame, you can clash colors to create an uneasy feel. color can be used to show attention to one thing, maybe someone's blue eyes' contrast to a desaturated work place. maybe he felt dull. he went on to a place full of bright colors, so he felt more comfortable.
symbolizing colors- don't always stick to a dark green is money sort of thing. make your own symbols. maybe blue is usually good, red is bad, but what if you make the main protagonist mostly red? he's not bad, he may be bold, viewed as bad so he may be used to it. maybe the antagonist wears blue, creating chaos though he is passive.
anyways, i loved the video, the visual editing, and the fact i felt i got something out of it. thank you.
You made me understand all this in a single go . You are awesomely unbelievable , as how easily you taught about color of the film.
Best content I could ever find, it's grateful to know that we can find this kind of content for free, so rich, so well explained
Very well done explaining precisely each use of this 3 fundamental things in filmmaking!
I always wonder why resourceful channels like these dont have millions of subscribers. This one is a crazy world we live in.
That is amazingly educational. Thanks to you, now I can understand more than simply the surface of a film. Thank you, StudioBinder.
It’s true ! I’ve learnt so much from this channel ! And manger to incorporate these into my filmmaking
Use of Colors in Movies bring them more Deeper and Profound into the Symbols and Thematics they Explores. Colors are Magic.
Well said!
@@StudioBinder Thank you StudioBinder for this Brief Authentic Exploration of Colors in Films. I think the Point of Colors in Films deserve a long time video to talk about. With Brief Movies Examples of Color Use in their Thematics. Like Blade Runner and more Deeper Movies.
Others Directors come to my mind, to Understand their works.
Akira Kurosawa / Francis Ford Coppola / Orson Welles / Frank Darabont / Oliver Stone / Hayao Miyazaki.
3:17, this music, colors flying, this video part, your words on the second green i was taken aback, that was something deep
If it's one thing that I like about this video, it's not just the details BUT the sound effects as well. It is as if I'm in a game or something. Another thing I like about this vid is when the background song is cut off and it mainly draws the focus on what he's saying. It really made this video unique. I enjoy watching this kind of videos. Jolly good show I say!
im so glad you put twin peaks in at the end, its the reason i looked color theory up :) glad im on the right track
Really want to know more about this, it is something really hard to make an understanding!

We'll keep making them if you keep watchin' them
This channel is actually nuts btw. I mean... You guys are bringing the concept of "provide value to the viewer" to an absolutely unseen level in the film industry. I mean, honestly shocking!
You explained this very well than others. Thank you!
i just found this video and i want to say that the editing is awesome and the amount of information you guys gave us is amazing
I've been thinking about exactly this the last few months. Funny this video and (by chance) your channel got pushed at me today!

Very interesting. Thank you. Love your channel.
The best I've seen so far for color pallet. You understand well now. But how about other episodes. I've checked almost all your videos, didn't see can I get link to them
You taught me in 5 minutes what my professor couldn't in a 2 hour lecture. What exactly do we pay these people for again?
the editing is so good
Amazing video. Absolutely loved the way you put things. May I use your 'Spartans -movie' reference in my video? I believe it's the best way of explaining analogous colours to my audience.
I love this; wish I could find one appropriate for middle school kids!
As an aside, this video has been superbly narrated.
Your video is so great helped for my filming...THANKS..!!!!
Wish this series not end.
Great video❤
I love when the color is obtained by objects, clothes and lighting. But I feel that today everything is digitally color graded like in 0:28 and for me that feels awful!
Thank you so much for this
informative video....Thanks for the info
Congrats to 1 million subscribers!
What a cool and incredible video do we have here! I always wondered which software they used for editing color on the shots, ´cause i see that the on PP or the AE don´t have the necessary tools

I love that somebody else recognises that The Neon Demon exists.
Zak Hunter-Gilbert the movie was mostly praised for its usage of colors more than anything else. That could’ve been a few of its only positive appraisals amongst the other things.
Disgusting. Why in the world would anyone want to watch Cannibalism?
@@emilycunningham8125 maybe because it was supposed to be an horror movie?
Thanks a lot dear. To make me more sensible ...

"Will you be able to sleep in a room painted bright red?"
As a sailor, I do every night lol
Superb bro
how bout color theory on web series. some of it looks so cheap and ignoring its cinematic essence
True, but what web series is this in reference to? We've seen some cinematic ones.
frankly i didnt knew much since i didnt watched most of it hehe
StudioBinder good example is DARK series. Purely cinematics as its pure identity n visuals
thanks
Excellent introductory video. I think this would be equally as useful for photographers as well. Im a photographer and always spend time colour grading images, on projects, and it does make a difference. I have a love for film, and I think that influences my work a lot, from composition, to colour palette, etc. Though my pet peeve atm, with film makers and photographers etc, is the over use of teal/orange (green/orange). There’s times it works and I’m quite fond of it, but not every image calls for it.
Agreed, what are your favorite color palettes?
It all depends upon what I'm shooting, film wise Birdman is a palette I like, and opposite to that American Beauty.
If I ever use teal orange, I tend to go much more into blue/purple rather than teal. I usually add it in photoshop, on soft light, at a low opacity. then create a copy of all layers merged set it to screen at a really low opacity between 5-10 %, and it ads a sort of dream like misty quality to the image.
I also love bleach bypass, I do a lot of shoots outside in my home city which is an old industrial city (Manchester UK), so it works quite well.
Bleach bypass is awesome to add once you've applied a colour palette to your image.
my website is simongarnerphotography.com, have a look and see what upon think
Good video
How did you make the animations? I looks amazing!
Good suggests
never forget that the theatrical release of the matrix was blue and was changed to green for the dvd releases
Wow!!!
Perfect
