Graham rationalizes dumpstering a small child under the guise of a teachable moment and character building. Love it! And, for the record, it is funny, and Graham did NOTHING wrong. Play the game. Win some, lose some. All good.
I just love the idea that the dimir agent Kathleen was standing right next to graham, while he crushed the childs hopes with a toughtseize: "I'm so proud of you honey"
Theros Beyond Death didn't have Heroic as a mechanic, but they did have 5 cards with names "Hero / Heroes of the ____" and they each had an ability that triggered when you cast a spell that targeted them, just like original Heroic. Each ability was actually the same, giving all your creatures +1/+0 until end of turn.
The flavor text of thoughtseize isn't helping you to look like a better guy... "Knowledge is such a burden. Release it. Release all your fears to me." -Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver I'm crying with laughter :D
My favourite card from Theros (maybe of all Magic) is Triton Tactics. It does so much for only one mana. Surprise blockers, toughness boost, freeze effect. I love all of it.
I LOVE the story about thoghtseize. That cracked me up. Look, if there's hand attack in limited you need to be prepared to get completely destroyed turn 1. The fact that you did this to a kid is just funny.
Oh damn, this showed me I need to buy some thoughtseizes, those have gone waaaayy down since when I was trying to buy a set. Pretty sure they were at ~$30 a piece. I'm also honored to be called Gary, personal favorite card of all time.

3:06 One elegant way they can "fix" regenerate is when you activate regenerate on a creature, put a regenerate counter on it. If it would die (or at the end of turn), remove the regenerate counter and tap the creature, then negate the destruction/death.
They did bring back Heroic, just not as the keyword because it was a very minor theme! There were several creatures named "Heroic X" and the effect was effectively Heroic.
I liked that the Guardians of Meletis were gay! And they later made the group hug Commander Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis be the two dudes the statues were modeled after. Except canonically it's gay erasure. "Look at these two dudes who look like they're hugging. They must be wrestling because they hate each other. There's no other reason two dudes would be hugging."
_Ordeal of Heliod_ and _Voracious Wurm_ are still such a fun combo to play set. It's super to instantly trigger an ordeal and if you get a 12/12 for 1G out of it too, all the better. Christmas Land is playing _Predator Kavu_ and then putting the aura on an opponent's creature ;) .
Ways to feel old 2022 edition: next US election, there will be a noticeable number of voters that never lived in a world without Facebook, Twitter, Wikipedia, or RUclips
Another nitpick with Regenerate: it doesn't work with sacrifice effects, even tho it is dying. It only works if it would be **destroyed** or dealt lethal damage.
I've only just noticed this looking at the art for Satyr Hedonist but - three joints in a leg? There's a reason that fellow is laying down, and it's not because he's relaxing - it would be incredibly hard to get anywhere as a bipedal creature with three leg joints. ESPECIALLY if they bend/lock like that. Dude would be in a gross amount of pain.
my first set release after starting magic was Theros, and I gotta say I feel immune to the psychological effects of hand attack after so many turn one thoughtsiezes. I bet you that kid now has nerves of steel and never concedes from a turn 1 duress or turn 3 mind rot.
Look, sometimes you have no choice but to crush a small child at a children's card game. When I do it, I make sure to then show them funny pictures of my cousins' cats
Theros was my first full set for which I did a prerelease! I am also feeling old; however, I'm okay with that. I can now say that I've been playing MtG for almost 10 years. Does that mean I'm no longer a newbie or a scrub?
Hold on, did Regeneration get changed in the ~10 years since I stopped playing, because it didn't work that way when I played. You didn't have to pre-emptively regen a creature, you did it in response to lethal damage or a destroy effect. Edit: I checked the wiki, and yes, they did change it after I stopped to make it the weird "bubble" effect Graham talks about. Huh, no wonder they don't print it anymore with that change in effect.
I mean you can totally win on a mul to 5. I won game 3 at a Khans of Tarkir prerelease on a mul to 5 when my opponent kept his opening 7. That said I too wold have been dumpstered by a thoughtsease if it had been in that format.
Ah, yes… of all mispronunciations, “Catie Bleeplepasta” is the one that stuck. Also, Alex and Cam’s heated debate about whether or not Nessian Asp is a hydra or just a two-headed giant snake. @WotC Strictly Accurate Taxonomy Only when? 💵
@@stikkontakt4 I'm only speaking from personal experience lol - the new set does look like a lot of fun. I still enjoy watching pack openings and other LRR mtg content but I'm too salty when I lose so I stopped playing so people don't have to listen to me whine at the game store.
One of the reasons I stopped playing constructed MTG was when Theros was released and I was playing in a Standard FNM. My opponent won the roll and then turn 1, swamp, thoughtseize, took my best card, turn 2, another swamp followed by another thoughtseize and then ANOTHER thoughtseize, leaving me with nothing but land. I've not played constructed since...
This pack is so full of cards "you sometimes just have to run" that Graham said that about Last Breath TWICE. He said the "sometimes you just have to run it" spiel and explained why, and then IMMEDIATELY said again "sometimes you just had to run it!". I get it, Graham! Not every card in Limited has to be a humdinger bomb!
Graham Thought Seizing a literal child after they'd mulled to 5 is just one of the most amusing stories that could have possibly come to light
Mom: "well you can't go to four"
Graham: "false"
The fact that his mom was there to witness it is just icing on the metaphorical cake of dumpstering.
what a legend
Mmm nothing like going turn 1 Seize into turn 2 TWO SEIZE
I mean Graham’s story is basically what it is like playing Modern. You are not proud of it but god it is so funny.
"I'm not proud of it, but it was funny" is basically black's motto.
No, black is always proud of it.

And, for the record, it is funny, and Graham did NOTHING wrong. Play the game. Win some, lose some. All good.
Clearly we should subtitle the show with "Crack-a-Pack: Where Graham Correctly Dumpsters Young Children"
teach the kid to fear thoughtseize
"It is important to learn early what it is to get grossly dumpstered." I will remember that mantra next time I wreck a small child at a game.
So today we learned that graham is a monster
I just love the idea that the dimir agent Kathleen was standing right next to graham, while he crushed the childs hopes with a toughtseize: "I'm so proud of you honey"
Graham absolutely dunking on that kid, lol.
If we're all Grey Merchants that's a lot of drain when we hit the battlefield.
Some serious devotion right there

I don't know what magic Graham has but these always seem like we are just sitting down chatting about magic. I love them!
The magic of gathering
This was the first set I played with when I got into Magic. I understand it's not popular, but it's nostalgic for me.
My favourite card from Theros (maybe of all Magic) is Triton Tactics. It does so much for only one mana. Surprise blockers, toughness boost, freeze effect. I love all of it.
"but also Graham dumpstered that child" perfect
Graham 'child-dream crusher' Stark.
And that folks is why most targeted discard costs more than 1 mana or has a more serious restriction.
I LOVE the story about thoghtseize. That cracked me up.

They did bring back Heroic, just not as the keyword because it was a very minor theme! There were several creatures named "Heroic X" and the effect was effectively Heroic.
Graham’s Thoughtsieze story is what it is like playing Modern in a nutshell.
"Graham dumpstered that child" quote of the year
At one point, that Thoughtseize was a $20 card. Wish I still had mine
