Thrash bands have said this song was influential to them, but there is nothing "thrash" about this song. It's early heavy metal, and totally awesome, but its not thrash.
@kurthahner1071 - with PLENTY left in the tank. I saw them live back in the day, and it's almost impossible to really describe the enormous wall of sound that was hammering on us. It felt like you'd have a hard time walking in to it. LOL
You gotta be deaf if you can't hear who influenced Eddie Van Halen with the whammy bar style. Richie Blackmore is one of the legends that we are lucky to still have with us today. Phenomenal guitarist. My dad bought me this album as a kid with my first record player. They started heavy fast metal and not black Sabbath in my opinion
In my HUMBLE opinion this is Deep Purple's best album.... yes many will say "Machine Head" which is close... or maybe even "Burn" both are great albums also .... but it can't beat the raw aggressive hard edge style of this album... much of their best work is on this album... let me know what you other Deep Purple fans think... it's just my opinion...
It's definitely up there, I have listened to the album hundreds of times, but had forgotten about it until I watched a documentary on the group yesterday. It's a different style than Machine Head or Who Do We Think We Are, but it's for sure great. Arguably their heaviest metal album, although Fireball is close. I sit and imagine what this group would have been if Mark 2 had stayed together for 20+ years. Sell out crowds and hundreds of millions in revenue, up there with the Stones.
Never been impressed with that scratchy, fuzzy, itchy distorted guitar noise thing at the beginning(We can't all like everything, but that's the great thing about music. If ya listen long enogh and push through the stuff you don't like, you're bound to hear something you do like.), but I love the way they transitioned it to make it seem like Lord was there the whole time when it was actually a fade in. Brilliantly executed move, and the rest of the song was great!

The American edit of the song just DOES. NOT. WORK. "Speed King" needs the "Woffle" introduction to play off of, to introduce the ferocity of Deep Purple as they enter boldly into this phase of their life. It adds so much to the song, as how hearing a car rev up adds to your appreciation of the piece of machinery.

So true. Best album when I was in high school 53 years ago.

I can feel the heat on this one 🔥🔥🔥
At the beginning, when it goes from Blackmore's fierce guitar to Lord's soothing organ it's as if it's echoing down the centuries.
This is ROCK AND ROLL! Cheers!
