  • Martin Milner Born December 28, 1931 EOW September 6, 2015
EOW audio tribute from original Radio dispatcher on ADAM 12, Shaaron Claridge, (now Shaaron Snead)
Sharon is a retired second-shift radio-telephone operator or police radio dispatcher from the Van Nuys Division of the Los Angeles Police Department best known for her voice work on the Adam-12 television series.
Martin Sam Milner was an American film, stage, radio and television actor. Milner is best known for his performances in two popular television series: Route 66, which aired on CBS from 1960 to 1964, and Adam-12, which aired on NBC from 1968 to 1975.
Milner and Webb had a long-established working relationship by the time it came to cast Adam-12. Milner appeared in numerous episodes of both the radio and television versions of the seminal Jack Webb series Dragnet. Milner had also worked with Webb in the 1950 film Halls of Montezuma and the 1955 film Pete Kelly's Blues. This led to the role for which Milner is best known.
In 1968, Milner returned to television as seven-year LAPD veteran uniform patrol Officer Peter Joseph "Pete" Malloy in the Jack Webb-produced police drama, Adam-12. Kent McCord played his partner, rookie Officer James A. "Jim" Reed. The popular NBC series ran from 1968 to 1975. Like Webb's Dragnet, it was based on real Los Angeles Police Department procedures and cases. It was hailed for its realistic, positive portrayal of ordinary police officers.
Milner was Webb's hands-down choice for "cop behind the wheel" Pete Malloy, in part because his relative youth and prior acting credits and because of his on-camera driving experience from his days on Route 66
Milner attended the University of Southern California where he studied theater. He dropped out after a year in the fall of 1950 to concentrate on acting.[8] He made his first television appearance in 1950 as a guest star in episode 28 titled "Pay Dirt" on The Lone Ranger. That same year, he began a recurring role as "Drexel Potter" on the television sitcom The Stu Erwin Show.
In 1952, Milner began a two-year stint in the United States Army. He was assigned to Special Services at Fort Ord on California's Monterey Bay Peninsula, where he directed training films.[9] He also emceed and performed in skits in a touring unit show to entertain the soldiers. Milner was encouraged by fellow soldier David Janssen to pursue an acting career when his time in the Army ended. He also served at Ft Ord at the same time as future actors Clint Eastwood and Richard Long While in the Army, Milner continued working for Jack Webb, playing "Officer Bill Lockwood" (briefly the partner of "Sgt. Friday") and other characters on the Dragnet radio series on weekends. He also appeared on six episodes of Webb's Dragnet television series between 1952 and 1955.
After his military service ended, Milner had a recurring role on The Life of Riley from 1953 to 1958. He also made guest appearances on numerous television shows including episodes of The Bigelow Theatre, The Great Gildersleeve, TV Reader's Digest, Science Fiction Theatre, Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse, NBC Matinee Theater, The West Point Story, The Twilight Zone (episode: Mirror Image) and Rawhide. Milner also acted in films, the most notable of which are The Long Gray Line (1955), Mister Roberts (1955), Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (1957), as jazz guitarist Steve Dallas in Sweet Smell of Success (1957), Marjorie Morningstar (1958), Compulsion (1959) and 13 Ghosts (1960).
    On September 6, 2015,
Martin Sam Milner died of heart failure at his home in
Carlsbad, California, at the age of 83

Like many here, Adam 12 was the reason I became a police officer. Officer Malloy was the embodiment of a true professional, dedicated, humble and a bit gruff. Now retired after 32 years of service, listening to his EOW broadcast really brings tears, not because he was just playing the part of a police officer, but because he inspired so many to choose this noble profession.
    Rest well brother...

I rate Adam 12 at the very top of police television shows. Martin Milner has long been an actor I very much looked up to and still look up well after his passing. Growing up in the San Fernando Valley, Dragnet, Adam-12 (and later Emergency!) inspired me to become a Police Officer. While on the eligibility list waiting for my number to come up, I applied for Dispatch and nailed the test. It was a perfect fit because I was a radio and computer tech geek too, and we got shot at far less often! 27 years later, I'm a fat old retired bald adult who still bawled uncontrollably listening to this EOW. Thank you Sharon, for your wonderful tribute.

Hi Clyde, I originally wanted to be a cop (was on the eligibility list) when I took the dispatcher test and nailed it. Turned out to be a great fit, working with advanced computers, radios and other tech plus we got shot at far less often. My 27 years of 9-1-1 radio were spent in the SF Bay area or thereabouts minus 3 years in Oregon, SO anyway it is I who should be thanking you for your service. Driving a desk in an underground, windowless nuclear bomb shelter is not the same. But now retired, I do miss the day to day interactions with my extended family in blue.

I am encouraged by your message, Officer Bill, and like to think many more police officers than not took their inspiration in becoming policemen (and even some policewomen*) from "Officers Pete Malloy and Jim Reed," the model Los Angeles beat patrolmen of television's "Adam-12.".
I think it is important that "Adam-12" always be aired on free, over-the-air TV, so future generations may have the chance to see how and why good cops do what they do, regardless of whatever are the current winds of political correctness, and will likewise be inspired to go into law enforcement.
I realize several other police dramas ("CHiPs," "Hill Street Blues," "N.Y.P.D. Blue," the various franchises of "Law & Order") have been produced for television since the days of "Adam-12" and "Dragnet." But Jack Webb's police procedural dramas, along with "Emergency!" in showing the work of firefighters and paramedics, were the first to portray the relative reality of first-responding public servants.
Credit should also be given to "Highway Patrol" starring Broderick Crawford, which was a peer of the original 1950s "Dragnet" in its fairly realistic portrayal of police work. In fact, besides series star Crawford as "Dan Matthews," the only other series regular (beginning in in the series' fourth season) was William Boyett as "Sergeant Ken Williams." Boyett would go on to portray familiar face "Sgt. William 'Mac' MacDonald," the shift supervisor of "Malloy' and "Reed" in "Adam-12."
*Of course I suppose more serious policewomen were inspired by "Cagney & Lacey" and "Lieutenant Olivia Benson" (Mariska Hargitay's character in "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit") than by the characters of "Adam-12."

Sharon was so professional when she gave the End of Watch dispatch for Martin, as it sure did choke me up. I think what got me which win she ended her dispatch with kma-367. I started out in a small town in Western Illinois as a police explorer, and was always big on proper radio procedure. I mostly worked volunteer Public Safety dispatching on and off over 30 years. I retired three years ago at 60 years of age. I did small town Police dispatching at first, moved to Southeast Texas and dispatched fire for three years. I've moved back to Illinois and done about every kind of Public Safety there is. Ride Along with my local sheriff's department over 20 years, operations officer for the sheriff's dive Rescue Team, assisted with senior citizens Police Academy programs, and chief of security for a large Park at a Labor Day celebration each year. After my homework was done me and my buddies would always play Adam-12, or Dragnet on our bicycles, and I always got to do the radio dispatching. Back in those days when Adam-12, emergency, or Dragnet would come on television my folks always knew what I wanted to watch. even in small town America I think Martin Milner would be very surprised how long for Smith has changed. seldom is the clipboard ever used now, it's all done on the computer in the squad car. there is no such thing as a scatter gun, now you have the assault rifle. officers no longer ride in the backseat with suspects, as even unmarked cars have a cage in the back. The 3 and 4 Channel mocom 70 radios are no longer around. Now you see multiband, or more high-tech radios in squad cars, most telecommunication centers are the same way. since she did such a good job dispatching for Adam-12, I always wondered why Sharon's name was not in the credits?. if you read this comment on RUclips and work Public Safety of any type, have a great and safe 2020. Martin Milner as Officer Pete Malloy was always so cool, calm and collected. My brother & I watched Adam-12 from it's premiere onward. Millner & the rest of the Adam-12 cast are what made us want to be Police Officers when we grew up (he was 8, I was 11). Result: My brother is a Division Captain at an NYC Metro area Police Department. I had a 31 year career working for a very large NYC Metro area PD as an un-sworn Civilian Officer assisting the Sworn Officers with their every day duties and the public. Thank you, Martin Milner, for your inspiration to us both!!!!

Adam 12 came in the days before gratuitous violence and sex. Some called it boring but as much as '60s TV allowed, it presented the life of beat cops... the mundane hours punctuated with seconds of sudden and stark terror. It will always be one of my favorites and Milner was one of the main ingredients that made it fly. I know he did other good work but I will always see Pete Malloy in my mind's eye when I hear the name Martin Milner.
We could do with a similar show today, but I don't think it would fly on any network. We need more inspiration and good examples today and not as many show that highlights the "grey" of life. Blueboods is about as good as we got today.

Like a lot of other guys and gals here, I watched this show religiously…I was 9 or 10 when it first came out. It left an indelible mark on me, planted a seed. Joined the PD when I was 23. Retired as a Detective Lieutenant 35 years later. Started re-watching this show, and I am amazed at how accurate the episodes were. Rules of evidence, PC., search warrants, plain view… there are some procedural changes of course, but the foundation was there. Malloy was who I wanted to be- the level headed veteran- unflappable and who the guys and gals turned to for advice.
This was a fitting tribute, with the original dispatcher. Choked me up.💔
As an aside, re-watching this show… holy smokes the muscle cars rolling around, and it was just commonplace!

I had the fortune to meet Martin Milner in the latter half of the 1980's, when he was touring with Gabe Kaplan in the Off Broadway production of Doubles, a play about tennis partners. Milner was very kind to me when I wanted to talk his ears off about Route 66. Because of him, I have traveled on just about every inch of the Mother Road, including unpaved stretches not on maps, and I have about 50 pounds of Route 66 roadway in my garden. He told me that as far as he remembered, I was the first person to talk to him about the connection of Adam-12 to Emergency and Bobby Troup, who played a doctor on the show, but he also wrote "Get Your Kicks on Route 66."

September 6 2015, a sad day for Adam-12 fans on of the best police duos on T.V. ever passed,
To those that was inspired to become an offer because of the show, you all have my utmost respect as do all officers, I wanted at one time to be an officer, but when I lived in D.C. I saw an officer ( I think he was, he had an uniform on) walk 10 or 15 feet from a female's body that was hit by a car to pick her head up, this changed my mind, and gave me a greater respect for your job, but didn't want to be one after that. Will always love Adam-12 a hero both Malloy and Reed.

I ended up in the fire service, but I grew up watching Adam-12, which served to solidified my reverence for those tasked with protecting the rest of us. Over the years, I have grown to respect my brothers in law enforcement all the more. Thanks to all of you officers - police, deputies, bailiffs, probation, parole, Border Patrol, ICE, DEA, etc. - who sacrifice day in and day out to make our communities safer and better. As a junior in high school, in 1998, TV Land syndicated and aired a marathon of Adam-12. I'd been injured and fallen ill during a missions trip. As I laid watching Adam-12 for what, from a feverish state, seemed like days on end, I too decided to become a police officer because of Adam-12, Martin Milner, and Kent McCord. I finished high school, went to college, served seven short years as an officer, and went back to school eventually going into psychiatry.

I like many many other officers was inspired by Martin Milner's professionalism, integrity and dedication to duty. I went to college and got a degree in police science then became a police officer for 36 years. Martin Milner was the epitome of a great police officer. I have often wondered how many young people that he motivated to become officers by his great example. What a tremendous tribute that Sharon Claridge did is E.O.W. call. Those are always the hardest calls to listen to. RIP Sir 10-42.
