Hi Geoff. I work for a signage company on the Isle of Wight who manufactured the totems at Farringdon. I am the head of the artwork department. Its great seeing our work installed as we don't often have the opportunity. I just wanted to say thanks for a great vid. I discovered you a few months back and have been really enjoying your work, especially your Island Line video. We produced all the signage for that to :)
I'm wondering if passengers will be regularly seen walking down each train whilst on route, to get to the front or rear to exit at the right place for them, making CrossRail trains a kind of travelator..... Get on in the middle at Hayes and walk to the back of the train ready to exit at Farringdon.
I live across the ocean and I’m super-hyped for Crossrail ! The esthetics and volumes are breathtaking. What a breath of fresh air and a release this will be for Greater London !
As where I live there are less than 30 trains a day on two lines (west & south) looking at the sheer number and variety of train option in and around London is mind blowing.
I can remember the KFC and The Raj Tandoori (the latter only open Monday-Friday) where the new entrance to Farringdon Station is now. Also, they kept the "from December 2018" legend on the Crossraill/ Elizabeth Line hoardings right up until January 2019, even though we were told it wouldn't open in December as far back as August last year. I still regularly see purple trains running in and out of Abbey Wood on test.
It takes a true and ambitious aficionado like you to produce such good and yes, nerdy content as this. i also fell in love with london and its public transportation system while i lived there in 2012 so I really enjoy your efforts of showing us around london and keeping us updated on work progress. I think that the opening of crossrail will be one of the greatest days in your life. keep up the good work mate!
Okay. I'm unsure how much time has elapsed since the footage was captured. I don't know if this was recorded this morning, yesterday, or last month (slight exaggeration there, I'm sure it's not that old).
Stan Patterson one would assume within the last few days but they are gradually doing all the open days like this over the next couple of months to preview the new/renovated stations.
Another cracking video Geoff. Been in the rail industry 2 years now and learnt lots from your channel. Hoping to see another one soon, something to do with a certain longest rail journey on the longest day ;)
Thanks soo much for this! I try to watch each ones twice so when I come out to visit later this year or next year, I'm aware of which lines goes to where and such! Keep up the great work!
the guy telling Geoff to stop touching the sign giving me flashbacks to the nemesis of captain Mainwaring in the Dads army series, the airwarden who kept shouting "put that light out".
I was planning to go 😭 next time I will check my junk folder of my emails... Great video as always!!! It was really fascinating and I can't wait until it opens!!!
Soon to be the busiest interchange in London. You should also see whether it is quicker to get the tube from Farringdon to Barbican, or walk along the Crossrail/Elizabeth Line platforms to Barbican.
3:55 "don't forget the line opens in stages" and in Dec 2019 they can remove the blanking plate over the T5 line. Oh, how time ages a video of a construction project....
Bummed I'm in the wrong country for those nifty oyster wallets. 😩 I have an older one, I used for my phone battery when I could still swap them out. Got it from the Loncon World Science Fiction Convention. Now our local transit has a card system, so we can really use them! They have sleeves, but they aren't as nifty. Geeks are geeks. And purple is an awesome color.
Geoff, did you spot the absence of an interchange to the Central line at Tottenham Court Road? Very odd. Signs are going to be covered to remove anything that's not Abbey Wood to Paddington from December.
A year ago today Geoff ;( It would be nice if you could use your connections to do a revisit to these stations. Pretty much a year from now they'll almost be done anyway. That too will be a timely update
Is there a risk that nobody is going to want to sit in the middle coaches of Elizabeth Line trains as proximity to key exits is usually going to be at one end or the other or will there be exit points halfway along platforms too? If exits are only at the ends there could be some weird overcrowding at ends but not in the middle.
I think I once read that there used to be a train service from Windsor to Farringdon, if they meant Windsor Central then nothing goes further than slough now as a shuttle, but interesting that a route thats been lost to the victorians can soon nearly be travelled again.
Geoff you realise that purple is a false colour don't you? Basically when light of a single wavelength comes into our eyes it fires the colour receptors closest to the wavelength, there is an exception to this: yellow coesn;t fire any colour receptors. But purple fires blue and red receptors (at the extreme ends of what we can see) without firing the green ones (in the middle of the spectrum). Purple is our brain's way of saying "I'm confused: this colour makes no sense, help!"
‘People want to know which exit for Farringdon and which for Barbican’ - of course it’s gonna be west for Farringdon and east for Barbican, just look at the map! 😅 sorry Geoff 🤣 another awesome video, thank you so much!
Geoff Marshall I thought on any map this is a given - the left is the west and the right is the east. If you look at the map, Barbican is at the right of Farringdon, then you know Barbican is at the east of Farringdon...
The complexity of this project is mind boggling, not in the least bit surprising that original estimated durations were wrong, they probably weren't set by engineers.
My one biggest gripe about Crossrails stations is their length and their seemingly limited amount of entrances/exits, if you're at the wrong end of the train you've got a long walk just to leave the station/transfer. For example, say you're at the middle of the train at Farringdon, and you get off, you've then got a long walk to either the Barbican end or the Farringdon end. For commuters this is simply going to mean people specifically using the front/rear few carriages with the middle of the trains being relatively empty. I feel like they needed some sort of exit/entrance in the middle of the station as well.
Geoff I see the Farringdon station is now finished December 2020. Can you create a video on the completed station!!!. Or is a cv19 no no. Hopeful Cheers.
on the line map they should of made room for a possible terminal 6 because the plan for the 3rd runway it includes a terminal 6 and they would most likely to build a rail or tube link to it
Well, there's that Purple Passion, again! I suppose it's sensible to have all the various transport modes linked together at the stations, but, gracious, some of these facilities are going to be confusing. I'm sure the everyday users will get the hang of it, fast enough, but for the tourist- more opaque than the Tokyo subway.
Hi. Enjoying your updates on the Elizabeth Line. Was at the Rail Live event at Long Marston last Wednesday. Managed to get a short ride on Vivarail's battery electrically powered unit. Saw Alice Gillman at the Vivarail tent and mentioned I'd seen her on one of your videos, she asked if you would be attending the event. I told her I didn't know, I'm just one of your subscribers. Also managed to steal a couple of minutes of Adrian Shooter's time to ask about increasing production of the D train project if he gets positive sales results, as I'm currently looking for work.
1:07 Just to make it clear - instead of watching Fifa World cup I'm watching Geoff Marshall's videos - and you know what.... I feel great about it! ;-)
Erik Griswold Or Auber. Auber on the RER A is between Opéra and Havre Caumartin. The construction of the RER E station Haussmann Saint Lazare in 1999 added a connection with Saint-Lazare subway and railway station.
I have been watching your vids with great interest..... great work! We'll be spending 4 days up the road from Barbican in May 2020.I have downloaded the May 2019 TFL tube map and I'm trying to find this line on that map? Is this line not operational yet hence not on the map yet?
There's a junction installed maybe a year ago just to the east of Farringdon LU station. There used to be sidings there but have been removed, this new junction doesn't lead anywhere at the moment (the sidings were far too short to stable S7 / S8 stock). Will they be reusing the old Thameslink tunnel that linked Farringdon to Moorgate?
sharpley75 Tfl are currently negotiating with Network Rail to buy the old alignment. It would give extra capacity to Moorgate and another place to turn trains in service
Probably because you can also pick it up at Liverpool Street or Bond Street. Which would be quicker unless you were going to Oxford Circus (in which case both TCR and Bond street have their second exits near Oxford Circus)
How do I get a oyster card wallet from Farringdon Geoff the station and area means alot to be I used to go clubbing in turnmils untill it changed to flats but they kept turnmilll Street always remember waiting near the tube to get in love Farringdon allways go cold when I get there nice feeling
I'm kinda disappointed that they chose to build a new set of platforms at Farringdon, as seen in at Barbican with the lift, there are two abandoned platforms there that would've been perfect for Crossrail!
Hi Geoff. I work for a signage company on the Isle of Wight who manufactured the totems at Farringdon. I am the head of the artwork department. Hi, I haven't been able to access you email so have sent a message via youtube. Hope you've got it
Hi Paul, out of curiousity... How much influence do TfL have over the artwork, what sign goes where and what type of sign, what it says etc?
"When it opens in December 2018..." 🤐
Yeah, that happened...!!
Wait, haven't you heard? It's delayed so much, it's never opening.
Famous Last Words.
we are in 2020 and it still hasnt opened
@@GustawWu It’s now 2021 and guess what? Yep, still not open 😴

Geoff was asked if he liked Crossrail/Elizabeth Line more than Thameslink or vice versa.
He chose Farringdon.
Farringdon is both
Why don't they make Westbound Platforms "Platform W" and Eastbound Platforms "Platform E"?
Makes a heaping hunk of sense to me.
I was thinking that but then I thought why do they even need to be labelled with letters?! Just Eastbound and Westbound?
@@tasty_fish "the westbound Elizabeth line platform" "platform B"

Wow, Robert Miles would be very proud right now. How amazing is that?
proper nostalgia from that tune
Cool
was thinking the same thing. I haven’t heard this piece of music in 20+ years... omg time flies..
RIP Robert Miles

"Please stop touching"
*Geoff continues to touch*
To anyone wondering, or haven't seen other comments, the piano at the beginning is playing 'Children' by Robert Miles.
The editing is great.
I went past Rugby Station today and saw the new crossrail trains in a siding, I was very excited! My first sighting of the already iconic purple IRL
I’m a bit surprised they didn’t close Barbican station, with the widened lines tracks now closed, and the Eastern exit from Farringdon so close.
Nice video, Geoff. I’m going through all your train videos and I haven’t found one I didn’t like.
Great video Geoff! And Nigel really lit up the mood right at the beginning
