  • As Britain emerged victorious from the Falklands War, it turned its attention to repairing relations with one of its most important allies: the U.S. Nothing short of a 160-person banquet hosted by Queen Elizabeth herself would do.

    The way to a man's heart is through his stomach. Just feed with the President with royal food on solid gold plates and silver spoon and fork, courtesy of tax payers' money of course, and he'll say yes.
    Plot twist: In alternate universe, the President said "No, America won't help you. Thanks for the free lunch anyway." and then burps.

    Do you think the British royal family will provide guests from other countries with the same grade of royal banquets? No way ❢❢❢ Every production has a grade, such as flowers on the table, sconces, and queen's dresses. Compare the royal banquets of guests from different countries. The British royal family is very mean.

    There's a wonderful snipit from the full documentary that was omitted from this segment, where Paul Burrell talks about how the Queen lamented her anger to him at how the Presidents security made such a fuss about how secure the Castle was for the US head of state, despite it literally being her, the Queens, official residence.

    The Argentine ship Belgrano, which was sunk by the British nuclear powered hunter killer submarine HMS Conqueror during the Falklands war, was originally the US Navy ship USS Phoenix. The USS Phoenix (later the Belgrano) was at Pearl Harbour when the Japanese attacked and saw action throughout the Second World war. The US sold it to Argentina in 1956, who renamed it Belgrano. The Phoenix/Belgrano is the only ship to have been sunk by a nuclear powered hunter killer submarine. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARA_General_Belgrano en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Phoenix_(CL-46)

    The first bit of that video doesn't sound accurate to me.
    The US during the conflict offered the UK the use (via loaning) of the amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima (LPH-2) along with retired seamen to instruct RN seamen in her operation or even crew her in the event that the RN lost one of it's carriers. The USS Iwo Jima though primarily meant to carry helicopters on it's flight deck was fully capable of operating the US Marine's version of the Harrier making her a perfect replacement for the RN (as they operated the original Harrier) in the event that she lost one of her 2 carriers. This offer was made in secret in response to a request the UK made.
    Officially the US was neutral regarding matters in South America but the US allowed the RN to access US fuel on the British owned island of Ascension, eventually agreeing the give the RN access even to the reserve fuel stockpile they had on the island, this was done until the British managed to sort out their fuel logistics where afterwards they provided their own fuel. Though the US did do things like limit bandwidth for their satellites which were being leased out to facilitate communications and other transmissions. So though they claimed neutrality the US at the time (via the Reagan administration) was willing to jeopardize it's relations with it's neighbors to help the British save face.

    • @johnwalsh3635
      @johnwalsh3635 7 лет назад +8

      mithikx ".. help the British save face." What on earth does that mean? British territory was invaded by a foreign power. The objective was not to 'save face', but to kick that foreign power off British territory. That objective was achieved thanks to a logistical exercise never attempted before by any nation.

    I wish more people recognized the importance of the Royal Family. The Queen is no figurehead in need of British handouts. She is very likely a trillionaire. Her role in global peace and global security and global diplomacy is unfathomable. Her family has helped this planet far more than they have hurt it; for a monarch, this and her reign have been unprecedented. Here's hoping William and Kate understand the role they will play for the next century.

      Nothing against the Queen or anyone..we all have already lived past the history. But it's sometimes the sheer arrogance that the Queen or for that matter Monarchy in general, imposes that bothers. After all they are just humans. They were simply 'born' and they just inherit everything and suddenly become more than human (Megan Merkel's dad being not invited to his own daughter's Royal wedding is a very simple trivial example). Any Monarchy simply taxed it's own people, plundered other countries, Run their own business with the public money, and Gave back to the people not even a fraction of what they rightly own, While they themselves lived in far excessive opulence. Literally, they did it for their own comfort more than for anything else. Think how did it the poorest man of the kingdom lived, who was also taxed? Sadly hero worship is a dangerous thing and simply can pull a cover over all the ills, even if it is at our own expenses

    • @1985NathAtul

      A better or equal example would be in middle east where the Sultan or King is spending Billions on Yatchs, God knows how many luxury cars, Paintings, Gold toilet, private jets decorated in gold, owing all major companies and not allowing competition to grow.. While on another side he apparently tries to 'Save the economy' and people's job and wants to introduce Taxation to sustain the economy.! Who made them the king? Judging by the nature of humanity, i really do not think Human beings are so generous that they allowed one person to be the king so that, that person can live in all the luxury? Seriously, are we that generous??

    This is is poorly scripted. Nobody calls employees 'servants', they are described as staff. See another video where the Master of the Household to Queen Elizabeth II says that at state banquets there are about 80 staff members taking care of the guests. Not 500. Most of the castle employees had nothing to do with this dinner. The total number of staff includes experts taking care of one of the largest private art collections on earth including the huge collection of antique clocks, furniture etc, the forestry team, the gardeners, the people taking care of the horses and those with the cows at the Windsor Dairy..and so many others.
