I love your channel and your insights are amazing. I've been curious about the medieval knight. I know that armour was expensive so were there better and worst armours? Not all knights were wealthy .
what I have never understood is why the costume department in films doesn't just make highly stylized armors for the characters who would logically wear full plate. if the armor is unique and matches the character type, you would have no problem recognizing them
I think your main point is, save up and buy good quality stuff. That is my feeling when buying fire arms. It is better to save up and buy the good gun you really want that will stay with you forever, than buying a series of cheap crappy guns you have to give away to get rid of. But if you are dealing with young kids who want armor now and have little money, as you yourself were at one time, they may not have the option as they are always cash poor.
More bad armor less apologizing! We totally get you! That said, a really good follow up to this would be maybe even more of them, but where you go into all the problems! For those of us that don't quite know as much! Thanks!
You were going to make a segment on seppuku - I can't seem to find one in the search engine for your site, Metatron. Do you still plan to do this? Also, a segment talking about women's clothing in the various eras. Just to help round out the picture of ancient civilizations. Thank you.
Hey Metatron, not sure if you've done something like this before, but I was curious and wanted to know: what is your personal favorite equipment (weapon, armor, shield, etc.) and why? It doesn't have to be relegated to a certain time frame or area, just wondered which pieces you personally liked either for aesthetic or practical reasons. Wasn't sure if it was a good topic for a full video, but was interested! Cheers!
Thank you metatron so much for this video I've been waiting forever for a video like this thank you I'm looking for a full medieval plate armour to buy and have been asking people but you have now helped me a great deal thank you

Your reaction to bad armor are hilariously priceless! Really like when you freaked out "Mamma Mia!" when you saw that bad armor. XD lol (Although I agree with you.)
Hahahahaha, I love the Henry VIII helmet at the end. That thing was absolutely HORRIBLE! I actually have a set of armour and there is one secret that I personally discovered. The best armour for my purposes is Greek. The reason is twofold. First, my armour is actually made of brass which is much lighter than bronze but is still quite hard and most importantly, IMPERVIOUS TO RUST. Now, it will tarnish over time but some good metal polish and about one hour of effort will make ANY brass armour go from kinda cloudy to absolute mirror-finish. Even cloudy brass armour doesn't look bad because bronze never had a mirror finish. It's not historically accurate but it looks phenomenal. Brass is ever so slightly heavier than steel (but the difference is so slight that it doesn't matter) but it maintains what made bronze so great as plate armour. A sheet of brass is very flexible and elastic. This means that it doesn't dent easily because it has a bit more give and can snap back into form where steel might dent and stay that way. Keep in mind that the biggest reasons why iron and steel superseded bronze with regard to armour were the following: 1) At the end of the bronze age, Europe suffered a major shortage of tin which meant that it had to be imported and that made bronze extremely expensive. 2) Metallurgy techniques had advanced to the point that hotter temperatures could be attained, allowing smiths to work iron. 3) Iron is the single most common metal on Earth which makes it almost ridiculously cheap. The cost of working the iron was actually higher than the cost of the iron itself. 4) Adding carbon (carbon had almost no cost because it was produced by the smith's own fires) made steel which was better than wrought iron in every way. The amount of tin available in Europe would never really reach the levels of abundance available during the bronze age and the tin shortage actually ended not because new sources of tin were found but because the shift to iron and steel weapons and amour from bronze more or less eliminated the demand for tin almost completely. You can never have a shortage of something that nobody wants anyway. Even if a massive source of tin were to be discovered, the fact that iron was (and is) literally the most abundant metal on Earth and could be kept in good condition if properly maintained meant that bronze would never again be considered cost-effective as a metal for armour or weapons, especially with the invention of mail which gave 80% of the protection of solid plate at only ¼ to ½ the cost. This essentially meant that bronze would never again be used for armour, worthy though it was. Brass however is a great armour metal because it maintains the physical flexibility (probably even more so) and the (almost) maintenance-free aspect of bronze while having the extremely low cost and light weight of steel (because brass is made of copper and aluminum). As I said earlier, brass can be polished to a stunning mirror finish that literally looks like gold. Before the advent of chrome mirrors relatively recently, mirrors throughout history were all made of brass. There is one other MAJOR advantage to copper alloys (bronze, brass) over iron alloys (steel, cast iron) when it comes to armour that wasn't so much of a big deal in places line Norway, Britannia, Germania and most of Gaul but was extremely advantageous in places like Rome, Sparta, Athens and Troj. Copper is an incredible conductor of heat. Armour made of brass literally pulls heat out of your body (to a much greater degree than steel) and if it's a summer day on the battlefield and you're wearing a tunic with light padding, greaves, bracers, a metal helmet and a red velvet cape, well, anyone who has ever done re-enactments during the summertime or in a country that never gets cold will tell you, bring a towel and lots of water because you're going to sweat like you're in a steam room. Now, my brass helmet is of the Corinthian style and has literally ZERO airflow which is why the Greeks had is pulled back when not in battle similar to the way Athena is depicted as always wearing hers. I can tell you though that the brass pieces, especially the cuirass, heat up dramatically but keep me much cooler than steel plate would. I would even go so far as to say that I was almost as cool as someone wearing mail. Now, this is still by no means something that should be worn for long periods in hot weather because you will get heatstroke from it. It's still a very warm outfit to have on because it's still many layers on the body with only the thighs and upper arms uncovered. I still say it's far more comfortable than wearing steel plate temperature-wise. Of course, in the modern era, there is an even greater advantage of brass armour. On a cold Hallowe'en night in Canada, all the hot girls who wear the really skimpy and sexy costumes eventually get VERY COLD and love wrapping their arms around a man wearing VERY WARM brass armour. The also LOVE the Spartan look for some reason. ;-)
Wulflund made our Kings Helmet with the right head measurement and its fantasticly good fitting and strong and looks like a creation of the gods themselves. Just not Hema safe yet as it doesnt protect the lower jaw but thats an easy adjustment to make on your own.
Ciao Raffaele. Secondo te se in un ipotetico scenario di guerra avessi a disposizione soltanto armature di pessima qualità. Quale sceglieresti? (Potrebbe comprendere anche oggetti che non sono armature o scudi ma vengono usati come mezzi di fortuna)
i would love to see vidios of you in which you would talk about which weapens and armor styles were commom a a region. for example english armor 11th centurie
I know it isn't specifically your thing, but could you do a video on early 20th century attempts at body armor? I know there are a couple of cases of functioning armor used briefly in world war 1.
1:20 this armor was used in ww1, it was real and very useful, the nurses of the british army said that if all the soldiers wear that armor 3/4 of all the casualties would have been prevented, yes its useless in a sword fight, at the surcomstanses, they were very good. fan fact: Ned Kelly wear that kind of armor and it saved him a lot of times at the point that he rushed in the police men and there bullets couldnt break through.
Dear Metatron, i discovered your channel a few weeks ago and my "culture lust" is rampaging because of you! Therefore I am forced to ask if you could explain what you know about Celtic writing and Celtic runes (in particular the differences between Gallic and Germanic). People I talked to on this matter gave me discrepant theories, I'm sure that you as a linguist will be clarifying! Thank you so much for all the effort and time you put in your video! PS If you have already talked about this topic I'm sorry i didn't find the video!
1:20 that acctually is Ned Kelly (an hero/terrorist depends on whos side ur on) in his self made bulletproof armour made out of scrap metal when he fought against the police with his friend and brother
I'm currently reenacting the wehrmacht in 1944 and 1945 and I'm looking to get into medieval reenacting, probably high middle ages and some kind of force from around the Netherlands (that's where I live). My plan is to do a poor soldier, so a gambeson (maybe chainmail, but riveted is expensive so don't know yet) and probably something of a poleaxe/normal axe/spear or warhammer. I still need to research everything but what do you (or anyone with any experience and knowledge) think about this, am I making a fundamental mistake in my beginnings for example?
Speaking of armor, before I buy anything at all, let's say I'm doing a 15th century, knights hospitaller kit. What armor was being used for the knights of Malta at that time? I've tried to look into it but the sources are a bit, "wishy washy"
Knights of certain rank wear wool or animal skin for warmth or comfort, topped with chain for protection, topped with plate to be reinforced? Most would be a separate set, while some armor would have all three of those layers?
Metatron there's one thing that I'm curious about. What sort of medical care did soldiers, and knights have during war? In a modern war, there's medics that patch up soldiers on the battlefield. There's also military medical camps set up, to preform surgery and other medical procedures on badly injured soldiers. Did medieval warfare have similar on the field doctors and surgeons, like a modern day army?
Hey Metatron. Not sure if you're ever going to see this but I have to ask where can one get a good set of historically accurate 16th century Korean/Joseon Dynasty armor? I would really like to get my hands on one of those but I'm not sure where to look.
don't ever stop one i love watching you and two great information but please no more bad armor it looks so wrong but i want Viking armor it makes me so mad to see horns in helmets
I really hate open link mail. Where you can see right through it. If you can see right through it, you can stab right through it. They didn't have ice-picks in the middle ages, for 2 reasons: 1, they didn't have a lot of iced drinks, and 2, they didn't have sheer mail. If they had, I would like to believe they would have developed a spike they could stab right through it, until someone developed denser armor. I understand it's heavy. I used to make the stuff, but armor is supposed to protect you.
Metatron, those armors from WW1 we’re British prototypes. Also, if you want Medieval looking modern plate armor designed for the First World War, look up the A.E.F. Prototype Body Armor 1919.
I'd like to strongly support the things you said about only buying the high quality stuff. It will even make more sense if you think a bit about the example with the helmet. At first, think about what it would have cost you in comparison, had you been living in the 14th or 15th century to aquire decent pieces of armour, not "second hand", like picked up from a battlefield, but especially made for you, fit to your size. So if today you can get such a helmet from an modern armourer, and that in top notch quality for a measly 200 Euros, that is an absolutely fantastic bargain man! And for that money you end up with one of the most essential, lifesaving parts of your armour, HEADPROTECTION, dude! If you watched some of Metatatrons, Knight Errants or Shadiversities videos, you should definitely become aware of the importance of proper fit, design and overall wearing comfort that will make or brake usability of the piece. Consider the frustration, the discomfort or pain, the feelings of humiliation, to show up wearing a crackpot among knights in shining armour, that look like St.George himself while you give the impression of an ork that was late to the parade and received his equipment from the scrap metal bin. And to go through all that you laid out 80 fucking Euros! We can make it very simple at this point. All the cheap stuff, mass fabricated in China, India or wherever that is just sold as "Knight helmet Crusader" or "Roman Legionaire" just loosely resembling some depictions in a childrens book on "the Knight and his Castle"or the Hollywood blockbuster "Camelot" featuring Richard Gere as Lady Guinevra "the Rock" as Merlin and Brigitte Nielsens tits as "Tits", all this crap that is marketed on ebay for whatever price, this stuff has absolutely zero use or purpose other than making a buck from selling it to uninformed people without any clou about what it is they are doing. I know it is easy for me to speak about the virtues of patience, as I'm almost 50 years now. If you are 17 or 20 you need to be given very very good reasons to suffer through the pain of "not now" Spend your time useful by studying the excellent videos, books and other stuff you find online, learn to do quality handcrafting work (decorative knots and ropework!!!!!!) yourself, the secret key word that I give you here, and it is pure gold, is "Finish & Detail refinement" Time and work you can put into plain but good quality stuff that make an ordinary piece into a real luxury item, something of great beauty that will give you joy and pride of ownership whenever you hold it in your hand. The wonderful miraculous magic of polishing stuff ! I tell you it is a universe for the artist and the admirer of beauty., Cultivate a bit your self respect, being cheap is not a knightly virtue, a noble spirit does not waste his time and his means on phoney, wannabe stuff that might look shiny at a quick glance but lack all inner value, this is VANITY, another thing a knight should avoid. Gold is for the mistress, Silver's for the maid, Copper's for the craftsman, cunning in his trade! Well, said the baron, sitting in his hall, But Iron, cold Iron, is the master of them all! Rudyard Kipling (who else?)
Could you go over some signs for low and high quality in details? I mean, what if the 200 bucks helmet that one sees is actually a 80 helmet with a higher price label on it? Some stuff is quite clear, at least to me, like that chain over your nose without padding is pointless. But the difference in quality between two armors of the same base design? Not so much. Of course I realize that a 20 minute video on youtube is not able to go much into detail, but some can surely be done, right?

these vids are sooo good. so well informed, like the opinion/rant stuff too. subbed
what I have never understood is why the costume department in films doesn't just make highly stylized armors for the characters who would logically wear full plate. if the armor is unique and matches the character type, you would have no problem recognizing them
But the hellraiser armour did it for me...
Talk about a reverse iron maiden...
Lucas Warfel That's actually historical, should be a bear hunting armour
Thx
Lucas Warfel that guy needs to hang a "free hugs" sign on that armor
Thank you.
the spike armor is bear hunting armor
Awesome video! thats good advice for most big purchases. I have made that mistake a few times myself.
İn Romania we say: " I'm too poor to buy cheap stuff"
Keep your videos coming. I really enjoy the effort.
I don't call it bad, I call it: "Memeaful"
You may have touched on this in another video but I was wondering what you thought of the armor designs in the film Excalibur? Great video as always.
Nice video! I'm curious about Chinese armour though, a video on that would be interesting!
I wondered if you were going to be uploading. great video
You leave Siegmeyer alone! He's beautiful!
Cheers!
Thank you metatron so much for this video I've been waiting forever for a video like this thank you I'm looking for a full medieval plate armour to buy and have been asking people but you have now helped me a great deal thank you
A pleasure to be of help
Your hair looks great today, gorgeous. Heed my advice! Never blow dry your hair! I wish I could impart all my hair care wisdom but then this comment would be seriously long. Keep up the great work ;)
Your reaction to bad armor are hilariously priceless!
Keep in mind that the biggest reasons why iron and steel superseded bronze with regard to armour were the following:
1) At the end of the bronze age, Europe suffered a major shortage of tin which meant that it had to be imported and that made bronze extremely expensive.
The also LOVE the Spartan look for some reason. ;-)
0:33 damn metatron no need to flex on like that
Wulflund made our Kings Helmet with the right head measurement and its fantasticly good fitting and strong and looks like a creation of the gods themselves.
Just not Hema safe yet as it doesnt protect the lower jaw but thats an easy adjustment to make on your own.
There's no links in the description.
Yeah
Links are there now ;)
yay! :D
1:20 & 2:08 were both WW1 body Armours, believe some have already pointed that out though.
the armour at 1:21 looks like it could belong to a gimp
Hi Metatron, I really like your content! Please give the links to the armories you recommend. Thanks!
Links are there now ;)
Thanks!
That's a good proverb ...expressing a sentiment that I strongly believe in.
Yes indeed :)
*That moment when you forget Metatron is Italian and you're trying to figure out what M.A.M.M.A. M.I.A. stands for.
Hah! Really enjoyed this one. Well done :D
Could you do a video on armour/weapon maintaining?
Ciao Raffaele. Secondo te se in un ipotetico scenario di guerra avessi a disposizione soltanto armature di pessima qualità. Quale sceglieresti? (Potrebbe comprendere anche oggetti che non sono armature o scudi ma vengono usati come mezzi di fortuna)
ONCE AGAIN!! THE METATRON HAS PREVAILED!!!
However, can we address the Gladiator helmet... Ma dai...
Metatron, what do you think of Kult of Athena? Are there products Any good or are they poorly made?
i would love to see vidios of you in which you would talk about which weapens and armor styles were commom a a region. for example english armor 11th centurie
The spiky one is meant to protect against bears.
The little ghost mail coif (mail with holes for the eyes) gave me spooks
dont insult the god of thicc!
Jacek Waszkiewicz *T H I C C*
Full body spiked armor is a russian bear hunting armor which must have protected from bear attacks
I know it isn't specifically your thing, but could you do a video on early 20th century attempts at body armor? I know there are a couple of cases of functioning armor used briefly in world war 1.
Can you do a video on armor/ helmets from India, but explain what makes them bad? The Sugarloaf crusader helmet for example?
1:20 this armor was used in ww1, it was real and very useful, the nurses of the british army said that if all the soldiers wear that armor 3/4 of all the casualties would have been prevented, yes its useless in a sword fight, at the surcomstanses, they were very good.
fan fact: Ned Kelly wear that kind of armor and it saved him a lot of times at the point that he rushed in the police men and there bullets couldnt break through.
guys, you asked for Smough armor review. now you got it.
PS
If you have already talked about this topic I'm sorry i didn't find the video!
1:20
that acctually is Ned Kelly (an hero/terrorist depends on whos side ur on)
in his self made bulletproof armour made out of scrap metal when he fought against the police with his friend and brother
I want to eventually buy an Imperial Roman helmet. When I do, I would like to get your opinion in which is the best one, in which site
MAMMA MIA, THE ITALIAN MASTER HAS ANSWERED OUR CALLS
Knights of certain rank wear wool or animal skin for warmth or comfort, topped with chain for protection, topped with plate to be reinforced? Most would be a separate set, while some armor would have all three of those layers?
Metatron there's one thing that I'm curious about. What sort of medical care did soldiers, and knights have during war? In a modern war, there's medics that patch up soldiers on the battlefield. There's also military medical camps set up, to preform surgery and other medical procedures on badly injured soldiers.
Did medieval warfare have similar on the field doctors and surgeons, like a modern day army?
Just a note that armor covered and spikes was actually use for bear hunting
We have a similar saying in Germany :
Wer billig kauft, kauft zweimal
Who buys cheap, buys two times
The brewster body armor at 1:19 i think is actually one of the first bulletproof "vests" made and tested.
I like this video, but sometimes we, who don't understand armor, need more explanation why the armor on the picture is bad ;)
Hey Metatron. Not sure if you're ever going to see this but I have to ask where can one get a good set of historically accurate 16th century Korean/Joseon Dynasty armor? I would really like to get my hands on one of those but I'm not sure where to look.
love the beard and long hair xD
complimenti per l'inglese tra l'altro
To be fair, some of the armors in the beginning were supposed to be used during WWI to defend against shrapnel more often than other weapons.
Raff's inner cockney coming out in rant videos is awesome.
don't ever stop one i love watching you and two great information but please no more bad armor it looks so wrong but i want Viking armor it makes me so mad to see horns in helmets
If a Metatron video has Italian or humorous music, it's gonna be a fun ride.
Since maintenance is so important, how about a video about armour maintenance?
I really hate open link mail. Where you can see right through it. If you can see right through it, you can stab right through it. They didn't have ice-picks in the middle ages, for 2 reasons: 1, they didn't have a lot of iced drinks, and 2, they didn't have sheer mail. If they had, I would like to believe they would have developed a spike they could stab right through it, until someone developed denser armor. I understand it's heavy. I used to make the stuff, but armor is supposed to protect you.
It looked as it was Ned Kellys armour at 1:20, it filled its function, it wasnt good quallity or looked good but it worked
Metatron, those armors from WW1 we’re British prototypes. Also, if you want Medieval looking modern plate armor designed for the First World War, look up the A.E.F. Prototype Body Armor 1919.
lol, in Argentina we say ''lo barato sale caro'', which means ''cheap is expensive'', very similar to your saying I believe.
best youtuber ever!!!!!!!!!!!
I think there were some really cool desinges in there
I'd like to strongly support the things you said about only buying the high quality stuff.
If you are 17 or 20 you need to be given very very good reasons to suffer through the pain of "not now"
Spend your time useful by studying the excellent videos, books and other stuff you find online, learn to do quality handcrafting work (decorative knots and ropework!!!!!!) yourself, the secret key word that I give you here, and it is pure gold, is "Finish & Detail refinement" Time and work you can put into plain but good quality stuff that make an ordinary piece into a real luxury item, something of great beauty that will give you joy and pride of ownership whenever you hold it in your hand. The wonderful miraculous magic of polishing stuff ! I tell you it is a universe for the artist and the admirer of beauty.,
Cultivate a bit your self respect, being cheap is not a knightly virtue, a noble spirit does not waste his time and his means on phoney, wannabe stuff that might look shiny at a quick glance but lack all inner value, this is VANITY, another thing a knight should avoid.
Gold is for the mistress,
Silver's for the maid,
Copper's for the craftsman,
cunning in his trade!
Well, said the baron,
sitting in his hall,
But Iron, cold Iron,
is the master of them all!
