  • Elektron's mighty Octatrack is 10 years old! Hurrah!
    To celebrate, Elektron have released a limited edition tenth anniversary model which has already sold out (350 units) but also have released probably the greatest update of the Octatrack's long and distinguished life. This needed a video to dive in and check out what it means for users old and new.

      Over 7 years for me and I'm still fuzzy on a lot of the recording tricks. Frankly I don't record much on it anyway other than quick single shots that I trim up on the box. It took me forever to understand there is a recording sequencer on top of each track. I kept thinking the recording trig's needed to go on the main sequence. Then one day I try this out when I already had notes on a pattern and I couldn't figure out why they would disappear everytime I was in the recording setup screen. Then it dawned on me I could put new trig's down when in that screen. This was only a few years ago and I felt dumb.

    Wow, i thought the ram was full. Did not expect this! Happy Electron day! Great updates, many goodies in there! OMG finally we can play slices via midi, without big latency i assume! I wonder if they adressed the "1st" probability trigger bug...it has it's own life for me (i think there is a issue if we run each pattern with different step length), sometimes it will skip to trigger the first time but instead trigger the second time the pattern loops...but then if i delete the trigger and add it again a few times it works (sometimes). Also would be nice if they could make the "fill" feature a onehanded feature that do not mess up the arranger mode...it does not work well in Arranger mode because it will change the position in the arranger each time we press fill. Time to update and check it out!

    • @manne3d

      @@GazWilliams I just tested the 1st probability trigger...only tested it a few minutes. It worked on the midi tracks...then i tested it on a sample loop...it seemed to work...but then i took away the trigger and added it again (with the 1st parameter again)..and it started acting up (did not play the first time, but started playing the second bar) :/ seems more solid now but not 100% (need to test it more),...not sure if this is a user error or a setting...but the only thing i did was remove the trigger and add it again with the 1st probability parameter. Its not the end of the world, but can add to the confusion on this already confusing box...maybe it has to do with the sampleloop that is on INF length...and the sample has been played one time already before, maybe it needs to first stop/reset to know if its playing or not...and maybe that is what it is doing on the 1st trigger when it acts up (like inverse of what it should do)...i dont know, I did test to do the same on the midi track (take away and add a 1st trigger on the first step) and that seems to work. I did not test the other probability modes, i'm a big fan of the 1st probability trigger mode (when it works)...will report back when i tested it more.

      @@sidtinsley6727 Great. I really would like to know: why is that and what is different creative-wise now with tempo per pattern? Do you have a digitakt-like-approach (one pattern and permutations = one track?)

    • @sidtinsley6727
      @sidtinsley6727 3 года назад

      @@elekktrikk_home_video Hey man, for me tempo per pattern is just very convenient in general but specifically for live performances. When i first got the Octatrack I did not realize that it didn't have tempo per pattern until i got it. I had to make a long work around using the arranger mode in order to get tempo changes per pattern. Now its just way faster and convenient. Creatively it doesn't add much for me but for smooth workflow its a huge upgrade for me. Simple but so important.

    one thing i miss on Elektron gears is being able to loop between steps, sometimes I just want to fix something on step 48 till step 64 and I have to play 64 steps to preview, time consumer this thing, when we want to make music we hate spending time with small silly things, a part from that I like their gears.
    Thanks for the video though

    I was not too impressed. The longer countdown with pattern changes is good but no countdown at all would be better. The LED dimming has only 3 settings: unusable dark, sort of medium, too bright, but the screen gets darker, too, when dimming LEDs. The randomize is nice but is not available for trigs, only menu pages. What really would have been great: more gain for the quiet inputs, transpose sample tracks, live transpose, active steps (like korg), automatic slice with thresholds like maschine, reverb also for FX1, optional send FX (at least to the master track) etc...

    • @NS-pj8dr
      @NS-pj8dr 3 года назад +1

      not to mention, i'd personally like to see a few more timestretch algorithms such as a paulstretch, something similar to ableton's complex pro, or perhaps even a granular engine... and perhaps an extra reverb effect or two... octatrack with a granular engine would be truly insane.
      also polyphony!!!

    • @GazWilliams
      @GazWilliams  3 года назад

      Perhaps there may be a few more smaller updates to fix a few things still to come but as for a new timestretch Algo like Paul’s I seriously doubt it but my god how utterly awesome would that make the Octa then!

    How did you connect USB powered Launchpad to OT? I have a USB keyboard and I am looking for something that would let me connect it to OT, preferably synced to OT’s clock.

    • @GazWilliams
      @GazWilliams  3 года назад +1

      It was powered by a USB socket but connected via a midi cable as it is a Launchpad Pro. If your keyboard doesn’t have midi sockets you can get a USB host device like the ones made by Kenton or my fave by Retrokits the RK-006.
