I honestly can’t tell if Harry was genuinely quiet and slightly nervous, or if he was just playing around. The audience was super receptive, he was being really dry and subtle but absolutely killing.
He is a quiet guy. There's a really good documentary about him here on RUclips : ruclips.net/video/aIdpaDKhm5s/видео.html I'm stoked I was able to watch him film a scene up in Washington back in 2015 for the return of Twin Peaks.
@@JL-qo1hg Performing from a script on a set in front of a camera is a totally different skillset than being yourself conversationally on a talk show and playing to an audience.
It's too late to change it now, but Letterman should not have cut him off when he was singing!! Harry Dean went from nervous to transported and he sang a Capella. My god, he was stunning--until cut off. other versions of him singing this song are usually with him older.
A great, great actor. 👍 This man has done everything (and did it extremely well!) from Alien, Cool Hand Luke to Paris, Texas. One of the best 'character actors' to ever grace the silver screen. 🙏 RIP HDS 🙏
@@waynej2608 . I saw the movie Straight Time in the theater way back. I don't recall Harry, but now I'm very curious about his performance. Thanks for the comment. Straight Time was the first movie in my opinion that Dustin Hoffman portrayed a dangerous person.
@@bh8365 Yes, check it out again, Harry Dean has a significant role in it, as Hoffman's pal. Both actors are quite impressive in Straight Time, but then again, they generally are. Also, nice turns by Theresa Russell(wow!), Gary Busey and M. Emmitt Walsh.
Harry Dean, Dope with Burroughs, (I’m sure you’re gonna say Hunter S. Thompson), Dope, maybe speedballs with Johnny Thunders, I’d love to do dxm with David Lynch.
This is sad. Harry was a very deep intellectual. Almost how Dave is now. It's a shame Dave chose being goofy over having an interesting conversation. RIP Harry, happy trails sir....
Damn I want that jacket he's wearing. Never seen anything like it. Looks French Algerian as it has shoulder rounds but the upper pockets are M51 style with 1 button.... Strange.
I visited his grave just a few days ago. I miss him.
where is he buried? irvine?

Kinda mutually antagonistic.

@@Luschan yes, indeed!
Only Harry could suddenly appear in a film, own it, then be gone. RIP dawg!
Exactly ! This was actually my first impression when i first noticed him playing a short part in Fire Walk With Me.

I laughed out loud several times during this interview, couldn't exactly explain why, if I had to..
Brilliant!!!!!!!

He could sing really well. Check him out singing Midnight Special, in Cool Hand Luke. 👍
He was great, but he didn't sing a capella.
@@Berniewahlbrinck Beat me to it! I was about to point that out.
wow paris, texas, it is a very powerful movie.
Awesome. Harry and Dean Stockwell, were both brilliant. And, the gal, who played Harry's estranged wife, too. Natasha Kinski, I think. Love that one.
That's one of my top 5 films. Remember watching it on cable in my early teens and was completely mesmerized by it.
Man, he had a great voice! I know he regretted not pursuing his singing career more. ♥️⭐️ Love HDS!

A wonderful clip! Thank you for uploading it.
What a breath of fresh air.
Truly, one of the all time greatest character actors, for generations. RIP Mr. Harry Dean Stanton 🙏
What a guy. Whenever he appeared on the screen, he owned it. Miss you with love❤️❤️🌈👏⭐️
repo man is always intense
RIP.actor Harry Dean Stanton
dies at 91. (July 14, 1926 - Sept.15,2017) ..
REMARKABLE! not sure if he partied as portrayed, but was good actor! Also in Christine! Det. Junkins!
This is total comic brilliance by Stanton and Letterman
💔💔💔💔great actor, will be missed...
Paris texas is my all time fave movie & i am a britt !!
harry dean stanton: an american original.
He could really sing!
He had a band & travelled internationally for over 10 years! I think that was his first love, not acting.
Good singing! He stretches it out hilariously!
This is sincerely a wonderfully entertaining interview.
Repo man always lives intense
Beautiful voice. And good Spanish
Harry is so funny. What a pro 👍🏽
love this humble exchange get in an almost smallish living room setting and the background laughing is really modest a d sincere.
Letterman was a stiff that night, Harry Dean was supercool!
yeah idk y hes trying so hard to get a reaction out of him
Letterman was quite a well known jerk.
Missing Harry Dean Stanton 😢
I love the screwball interviews.
RIP HARRY & THANKS 4 THE MEMORIES MAN 💖 ✌ X X X
Brilliant man, RIP.
Harry was so good in Repo Man. Just to name one. Can't forget Cool Hand Luke, though.
And, Straight Time with Dustin Hoffman. Harry was in so many terrific films. I'd say he was the top character actor, in my time, anyway.

Before Joaquin Phoenix, there was Harry Dean Stanton.
No no no bad analogy
For the love of God. No.
I think Richard Jenkins is more in line with the kind of actor HDS was.
Stanton is a great actor.
i think harry really enjoyed watching himself on screen
RIP Harry Dean Stanton.
Plate O Turkey
Wonderful actor...been around since I was born, movies, tv, great.
Que descanse en paz....
nice song
They should have a statue of him somewhere...he and Richard Farnsworth and Sissy Spacek were in the same movie. All classic actors!
When HD Stanton used to sing with Jamie James over on Pico Blvd... they were tight!
Sam Harry and the HDS Band many times in the late 80's at places like The Palomino and Club Lingerie. Good times. RIP.
He sings well in Spanish.
I miss them both!
Fantastically comical appearance, he could have kept that song going for two weeks!
Harry is in my top five of people I'd have loved to get wrecked with.

Harry singing is nothing new by this point. Cool Hand Luke. Ummm hello....

Harry you were truly Lucky.
geez, he's good!!!!!!!!
You can tell that that dude has been through some shit.

Margaret looks none too happy holding the turkey.
I don’t blame her.
What a drag being the woman with the frozen Turkey on her lap.
No one noticed the subtle middle finger he gave him?
This guy really are in a constant state of tiredness when talking to others i can kinda relate to a little bit though.
No mention of his part and sings in Cool Hand Luke
brilliant. good natured mischeif. was he invited back?
This was his second and last appearance. (His first is linked above.)
RIP
give 'em a drink
Margaret looked so happy to win that turkey! Not!
Dunn thing is the year before letterman said nobody knew who he was 😂
BRAIN!!!! You know what they did to Bob?
The only disservice Harry Dean Stanton did to human race was dying
I always liked Harry Dean in films but he's a strange bird in real life, it seems.
Jousting...ouch!
