A THREE EGG OMELET?!?!? So proud of you bud....was worried your whole day was gonna be all gels, bars, and kooky vegan powders. =D (mushrooms don't belong in coffee) =D
I absolutely love watching these kinds of videos. It’s so fascinating getting a glimpse into different types of athletes diets. Everyone does it differently.
One of the keys with bananas most people don’t realize is that eating them when still green actually pulls minerals and vitamins out of the body as it is still is the ripening stage which is drawing. When bananas are just starting to get brown spots is when they are the most nutrient dense and more bio available in giving nutrient life.
haha... "lets be quiet because NTK is sleeping"... "now let's use the blender" :D lol But seriously, I really like you're nutrition videos. ;) Do you drink that morning coffee blend hot?
Here's my go-to breakfast: Coconut milk. coconut oil, mct oil, chia seeds, almond butter, cocoa powder, kale/spinach, one-two strawberries (frozen), maybe some coffee and some amino acids. keto-protein powder. Blend the night before. Administer after the first work out (around 6.45-7.15ish). Maybe I'll take out the strawberries based on your video...
I rarely weigh myself, only time I know my weight is when I go to the doctor or for some specialized sports testing. You want to gain muscle mass and also have a healthy body fat %, but I'm personally not aiming for a specific number or %.
Hope you like it, I'm addicted to their products, I have found such a great improvement by drinking them. The mushroom taste can be an acquired one for some people but I'm very used to it now.
Thanks for the video Taren! What would you recommend for someone that works out fasted at 5am due to work? I often workout at 5am and 5:30pm. I eat some carbs before bed which in my mind helps me not get too trashed from the AM work. And it's always less than an hour of a workout. I'm trying to clean up my nutrition and there is SO much that goes into it.
You could make a bulletproof coffee before bed, put it in the fridge, and heat it up (or drink it cold) before you work out? That's often what I do when I know I'll be crunched for time!
Great video Taren. I am working on diving back into triathlon and with that taking a good hard look at my current poor nutrition. There are a lot of add-on's in your nutrition plan. Now I am not going to be working out nearly as hard as your are, but I want to give this a try to see how I feel during my workouts. What of the many items in this video do you say are most important? Realize that most of the items you use are pricey and all total will have by wife pretty pissed at me!! Is it the mushroom coffee elixir, the MCT oil, the super food blend or one of the many other items you use? Again I am looking for the bare necessities here and then I can adjust from there. Thanks again for all of your vlogs and podcasts. I am really looking forward to getting back into the swim/bike/run lifestyle.
First off, not all of the items are super pricey. A bottle of MCT oil can be ordered from lots of good online sites (or at a local health store) for not a ton of money and it lasts a long time. But to answer your question: the "most important" item is going to differ for each person, so you need to research them and their benefits, and see what most fits your health, your body and your goals. What's most important for me isn't going to likely be most important for you.
Hi TT! Thanks for this! Do you have any suggestions on any nutrition books for triathletes that include your comments on being "fat adapted" rather than "carb adapted?" I've been training for a couple of years using IF and training in the mornings... your methodology seems to be so similar. I'm intrigued. Always looking to improve! Thank you :)
Why do you want to be fat adapted? You need carbs to be able to do high intensity work (without carbs you just cannot do that because fats are slower to oxidate (aka turn into energy)). However it can be good to periodize your carb intake; some easy sessions without carbs, but hard intense sessions always with sufficient carbs!!
What sources of information do you use to stay up to date on the latest nutrition research- for instance, the fact about antioxidants limiting nutrient absorption?
You should check out mysportscience.com, it's the website of asker jeukendrup, one of the leading researchers in the field of sports nutrition (worked for teams like fc Barcelona and team sky and top endurance athletes like haile gebrselassie). Lots of good blogs on there!
So.. you eat oatmeal and you eat an omelette all day. You suggesting to use powders and supplements so much? No actual meals or whole foods? Just 10 scoops of this
Quick question about the morning shake! I really love adding bananas to smoothies/shakes. Would doing that in this case take away from the fat based premise? I really love the mushroom coffee!
A few berries should ofcourse be fine. But in training periods its better to not supplement with tons of anti-oxidants, as they indeed reduce the adaptation of your body to all of the training stress. All this stress is a signal for your body to prepare itself better against a next stressing stimulus (ia a training/race), and thereby thus improving your performance. The anti-oxidants will reduce the stress, and thereby the adaptation. Its a bit long term adaptation (what you want during training periods) vs short term recovery (what you want when you have another race the next day for example. Then you just want your body the get rit of all the stress asap and you dont worry about the long term adaptation). The same most likely is the case for things like ice baths. Asker Jeukendrup (one of the leading sports nutrition experts in the world, having worked with people like Haile Gebrselassie, team sky, FC barcelona, Chelsea, etc etc) has written a little article on it: www.mysportscience.com/single-post/2015/06/15/Rapid-recovery-versus-long-term-adaptation
Hey Taren, delayed message I know... let me know if I'm wrong, but I thought the recent scientific literature has shown anti-oxidant 'supplements' are bad for you, and especially after exercise these supplements will have negative reaction in the body to what we want. However, I thought the recent literature also showed that berry/fruit based anti-oxidants, (rather than supplements,) show positive results in the body. Let me know if I'm wrong, I can't find the journal/s about this or the article by Dr Greger, but I'm fairly sure this is what he has found. Cheers
Taren that omelette would be awesome after my triathlon this morning in CT. First sprint in the books and under 1:40! Thanks for all your videos, I was more than prepared for the whole thing. Cheers!
TT, in the comments you say that you do not count calories and that's fine, neither do I, but what is you average daily Macro Nutrient percentage breakdown for Fat, Protein and Carbs?
Taren, great videos keep up the good work. 2 observations : 1. You eat a lot of calories - by my count you probably had 4K. You might benefit by reducing that by 500-750. 2. You aren’t becoming fat adapted - if you were trying to enter keto you’d have to materially reduce the carbs. Thanks again for the videos.
He didnt say he wants to enter keto (I also wouldnt recommend him), but he's right that some periods of the day without carbs can enhance training adaptation. But its then still important to do your key intense sessions with carbohydrates.
I was wondering if you were still getting up this early with the new studio etc. My main issue with triathlon is the early morning lifestyle. It's not my thing!
It doesn't have to be, though... for me, if I get workouts done at the start of the day, I'm sure to get them done. If I don't, there's a good chance I won't do it. So I just know myself well enough to know that part. However, it doesn't have to be like that for everyone! If you're better at night, do that!
Don’t you think that you sluggish sometimes because of too little carbs intake or just small calorie intake? I don’t think that there was even 2k calories in that day(may be I’m wrong cause of fat is high calorie dense, but still 2k calories is nothing for triathlete)
so i ordered some to try, did i order from the right place, is it only ship out of US. shipping, and dollar value makes it expensive coffee for a Canadian
If you want the discount, you'd have to go straight to FourSigmatic.com... but there are some Canadian websites that offer it, you'll just have to Google around and do your research. As for why: I've talked about it in several videos, there are many studied benefits to mushroom and cutting down caffeine is smart for everyone.
What! What! I needed something super easy to digest before bed... I read so many business books, they get my mind spinning so I need something that doesn't make me think.
NKT-Do you still get to clean up the kitchen after TT?!? Lol TT-That omlet looks awesome! Thanks for the pointer about fats in the morning and carbs later.
No, actually. I get asked constantly what I eat in a day. I just happen to personally use this stuff -- and have been using it for a couple of years, well before I had any contact with the company. And if it was a commercial, oh well, right?
How much would you say you drink in a day, in litres? i almost only drink water, average around 5 litres a day, when I'm on the indoor bike i will drink about 1.8-2.5 litres an hour. Not going to change, it just looks like you drink a lot as well.
Product placement would suggest I'm getting paid to talk about those items, and other than my partnership with FourSigmatic (and I was using their products for a LONG time before they sponsored my podcast), I am not paid to talk about any of those items.
So, I tried the taren shroom coffee smoothie thing. Super pumped during rides, and it was awesome. Hated the taste though. Shroom coffee ≠ cappuccino. ;)
Yeah, it does take a little getting used to but I'm honestly into it now. Though Four Sig does offer actual coffee grounds which also contain mushroom stuff, you could try that.
Dairy catabolic?? Whey and casein protein (both coming from milk) are the highest quality proteins and have been shown to stimulate muscle protein synthesis most effectively. Especially when compared to plant based protein, which do not contain all amino acids the body needs, contains less leucine, and is harder to digest. Btw, interesting video!
Taren, I got respect for you man. You work hard and consistently put out good content... But I thought you were representing team vegan and I gotta say I feel a bit let down! Still think your great, but hit me up if you ever want to get back on track and are looking for some help with nutrition. Personally, I wouldn't get through that workout after an omelette like that either! :P
Well, I actually never have been vegan. I've eaten largely plant-based, but never 100%. I would still eat meat if it was served to me at someone's house or that type of scenario. At home, or in situations I could control, I would choose plant-based meals. However, I'm pretty in-tune with my body and I have felt a need to bring animal protein back in small amounts. I feel much better since I've been doing that.
so youre saying if you have to eat 2k calories to lose weight...And you decide to eat them all and then go to sleep for the night you wont lose weight?
Kind of depends on your goals, eating before going to bed can provide you the necessary nutrients to recover over night. If losing weight is all you worry about then you can skip it.
A THREE EGG OMELET?!?!? So proud of you bud....was worried your whole day was gonna be all gels, bars, and kooky vegan powders. =D (mushrooms don't belong in coffee) =D
Powder Pills Coffee Bars whats with vegetables Soja whole brad Fish?
Just eat regular healthy food. This guy is way overthinking this and not understanding the immense complexities. Of human physiology.
I agree

Do you drink that morning coffee blend hot?
You're not wrong. She didn't wake up though. :) Sometimes I drink it hot, sometimes I make it the night before and put it in the fridge.
Here's my go-to breakfast: Coconut milk. coconut oil, mct oil, chia seeds, almond butter, cocoa powder, kale/spinach, one-two strawberries (frozen), maybe some coffee and some amino acids. keto-protein powder. Give it a try and see how you feel!
Do you track your bodyweight? How often do you weigh yourself? Is there benefit to gaining or is the goal to have a lower bodyfat %?
I rarely weigh myself, only time I know my weight is when I go to the doctor or for some specialized sports testing. You want to gain muscle mass and also have a healthy body fat %, but I'm personally not aiming for a specific number or %.
If you ever start a cooking channel, I'm there for it.
Ha! Won't happen... I can't cook real food.
Triathlon Taren videos of kim cooking, you re heating the next day
I appreciate your explanation on your food choices and timing. Ordered some of that our Sigmatic to try too...
Hope you like it, I'm addicted to their products, I have found such a great improvement by drinking them. The mushroom taste can be an acquired one for some people but I'm very used to it now.
Any reason not to use real milk in any part of your diet? It seems to have more nutrition than the non-milk alternatives. Love the videos! Thanks
do you have a link to the purpose of dairy reduction? Is there a specific study you are referencing?
Interesting about the dairy and muscle growth comment! Never knew that. Where did you get that info? Would love to read more on it
Thanks for the video Taren! What would you recommend for someone that works out fasted at 5am due to work? I often workout at 5am and 5:30pm. Is it a canadian thing to put salsa in eggs?
Great video Taren. I am working on diving back into triathlon and with that taking a good hard look at my current poor nutrition. There are a lot of add-on's in your nutrition plan. What sources of information do you use to stay up to date on the latest nutrition research- for instance, the fact about antioxidants limiting nutrient absorption?

Yasssss 😍😍😍😍 Been waiting for this video!!! 😂 Thanks Taren! 🤗
Just curious, how many calories do you burn in a day? and how much do you take in? having trouble balancing my workouts and diet.
Absolutely no clue -- I don't count calories at all. I go by feel.
Good stuff as always! the intro with the hush turning down the music made me laugh so hard :D
So.. you eat oatmeal and you eat an omelette all day.
You suggesting to use powders and supplements so much?
No actual meals or whole foods?
Just 10 scoops of this
I eat lots of actual whole foods and meals. I change up my nutrition constantly.
Jake O'Connell that’s what it seems like. I was waiting for more teal food and less snacks.
Quick question about the morning shake! I really love adding bananas to smoothies/shakes. Would doing that in this case take away from the fat based premise? I really love the mushroom coffee!
Yes, it would 100% take away. Banana is pure carbs/sugar
Anti oxidants actually reduce the benefits of training. So it's best to have on a rest day.
OK? Didn't know that. I guess no more berries in my recovery smoothy?
ObiwanSchinobi A few should be fine. Its all about balance. Trainer road had this as a topic in a podcast.
A few berries should ofcourse be fine. Thanks for the info, guys!
and if o only have like 1 rest day evry 7-10 days? no berries/vitamins? cuz C-vitamin is a antioxidant for ex
I want to try Four Sigmatic's but I don't want any coffee in it. Do they have Non-coffee blends for energy?
There is only coffee in one of their blends, actually. Go to their website and look at all the different types they have.
Hey Taren, delayed message I know...

Glad to hear it!
Must be a mega expensive day!?
Yes, I do kind of eat us out of house and home...
buy Food cook and Eat why americans dont cook?
Do you really recover well with all the lack of protein you intake in your diet?
I don't lack protein at all.
I just realized watching u that I don't eat enough. Omg. I'm full just watching u
Haha... welll, I have a big appetite but I also train a TON.
Hi Taren! Love these nutrition vids! At 5:40 you mix a 4-1 carb-proteïne drink. What did you use?
Also curious about this and any bar recs with the same ratio.
What do you for work?
TT, in the comments you say that you do not count calories and that's fine, neither do I, but what is you average daily Macro Nutrient percentage breakdown for Fat, Protein and Carbs?
I don't know because I don't count any of that. I eyeball it all.
Triathlon Taren Educated Guess based on eyeball experience?
5:28 what is in the bag?
What are your thoughts or have you tried the products by laird Hamilton
Nope, haven't tried them.
Taren, great videos keep up the good work. 2 observations : 1. You eat a lot of calories - by my count you probably had 4K. You might benefit by reducing that by 500-750. 2. Very fair point - i assumed he was doing some sort of Low carb / Keto / Paleo formation.
Nope, not trying to be Keto! Trying to feed my body in the best way possible based on my genetics and also based on timing vs my workouts.
Why do you say I'd benefit by dropping those calories?
I was wondering if you were still getting up this early with the new studio etc. My main issue with triathlon is the early morning lifestyle. It's not my thing!

Is your collagen either vegetarian or vegan? If not, can you recommend one that is?
Collagen is from animal products, it can't be vegeterian or vegan.
hi Taren. I did see that there was a product called Collagen that was derived from plants....
Perhaps, I've never heard of anything like that. I use the animal derived one.
thanks
Don’t you think that you sluggish sometimes because of too little carbs intake or just small calorie intake? I don’t think that there was even 2k calories in that day(may be I’m wrong cause of fat is high calorie dense, but still 2k calories is nothing for triathlete)
It's nearly 4000 calories actually
I think your right, not that much in terms of carbohydrates it seems.
I’ve counted ~3k calories with cronometer(and I used cliff bar instead of krono)
14/42/43 protein/fat/carbs
Also caffeine can lead to low days)
Would love some of NTK’s snack recipes. You teased them in the 2017 food video. 😀
I am sure you'll learn about it if you'll read woo&pep handbook from cover to cover :)
Great meeting you at Birds Hill today, Taren!
Same to you, Sean!
Lots of help great ideas thanks taren keep them coming
Hahaha the quiet credits made me laugh
Total calories for the day? (Approximately)
No idea, I don't count.
i am sure it is in the comments somewhere, but why mushroom over the traditional coffee bean.
so i ordered some to try, did i order from the right place, is it only ship out of US. shipping, and dollar value makes it expensive coffee for a Canadian

I can't believe I've been religiously following every word for two years, only to find out he's reading Harry Potter...
What! What! I needed something super easy to digest before bed... I read so many business books, they get my mind spinning so I need something that doesn't make me think.
Ha! Just joking- you are the best!
With your poop joke consistency, may I suggest "Everybody Poops" as light reading? Although, sometimes it can be a thinker.
Thanks man! Sorry for busting your illusions about me. ;)
Oh, I'm an expert on the topic of poop.
NKT-Do you still get to clean up the kitchen after TT?!? Lol
TT-That omlet looks awesome! Thanks for the pointer about fats in the morning and carbs later.
She might...... lol
No more pickles & peanut butter before going to bed? :)
Nah, I've fallen off the wagon with that!
Yea, I have really kind of enjoyed that combo...who knew?
I love this video! Looking forward to your book ;-)
Great info Taren thank you!!
So basically this is a commercial for for a mushroom supplement company...
No, actually. I get asked constantly what I eat in a day. I just happen to personally use this stuff -- and have been using it for a couple of years, well before I had any contact with the company. And if it was a commercial, oh well, right?
Hi Taren, no ill-will my man, I was just being snarky. Love the channel. Cheers!
All good!
How much would you say you drink in a day, in litres? i almost only drink water, average around 5 litres a day, when I'm on the indoor bike i will drink about 1.8-2.5 litres an hour. Not going to change, it just looks like you drink a lot as well.
I have to work hard to get enough water, actually.
Jeez! So many product placement that would put a Dwayne Johnson movie to shame!
Product placement would suggest I'm getting paid to talk about those items, and other than my partnership with FourSigmatic (and I was using their products for a LONG time before they sponsored my podcast), I am not paid to talk about any of those items.
please do more of these vlog's :))))
great stuff, but man it makes eating seem like such hard work lol
u do not eat so much calories as i tough i would hmmm
So, I tried the taren shroom coffee smoothie thing. Super pumped during rides, and it was awesome. Hated the taste though. Shroom coffee ≠ cappuccino. ;)
Yeah, it does take a little getting used to but I'm honestly into it now. Though Four Sig does offer actual coffee grounds which also contain mushroom stuff, you could try that.
As always fun content.😄😜
“Vegan” coffee drink, puts in gelatin 😹😹 oh Taren
Ha, yes, good point. I should have said dairy free.
Btw, interesting video!
you eat a lot of omega-6, might be counterproductive
Sorry man but this feels like an 13 min add.
For what? The food I eat? I'm not selling it, so how is it an ad?
Taren, I got respect for you man. You work hard and consistently put out good content... But I thought you were representing team vegan and I gotta say I feel a bit let down! Still think your great, but hit me up if you ever want to get back on track and are looking for some help with nutrition. Eating before bed is a myth, all that matters are calories in calories out
It would be hard for you to be more incorrect
explain?
so youre saying if you have to eat 2k calories to lose weight...And you decide to eat them all and then go to sleep for the night you wont lose weight?
Kind of depends on your goals, eating before going to bed can provide you the necessary nutrients to recover over night. If losing weight is all you worry about then you can skip it.
And yes its really easy: kcal in vs kcal out
lol how much coffee helps you go?
I don't need coffee to help me go, I have a very... active metabolism. :)
You need to eat more vegetables.
Opened the banana upside down ...
hahaha double digits by now.
Shhhh! lol
FIRST
