I am an American who has always dreamed of moving to the Netherlands. I was always fascinated by the culture and I have been diligently learning Dutch. I hope to also get to learn more about Belgium. I am visiting both in august, and am so excited

That's cool man but you don't have to hold off till you learn it. I'm dutch and I can assure you that you will get around easily with english too, although if you want to live there you should ofcourse learn it at some point

Most people from the Netherlands can speak very well English so you don’t have to learn Dutch. (From my experience) because I already started learning English when I was 6 years old (am 14 now)

Belgium and the Netherlands share a common language, Dutch... As far as Belgium goes, that's true in the northern half of the country (Flanders), but Southern Belgium speaks French (Wallonia) and Brussels, officially bilingual, is largely a French-speaking city. And let's not forget the people of Ostbelgien who are German speakers.
and that the flemish people have there own flemish language wich can be seen as its own language by regions wich is 1 reason why in some parts of belgium a dutch person can't fully follow a conversation like the word marselleke being a flemish word not many dutch people seem to get wat it means (its a type of shirt without sleeves or just showes everything from the hand to the sholders)

Not exactly. Belgian people are more natural, kind, helpful and honest. Where as the Dutch are more proud, arrogant, fake and rude and stylish. But it’s good to be friends with one another. Even tho the Dutch generally only are friends when you’re at thier party or feel like they need attention or just hear you out to make a point or get an idea how to make more money.

For some reason over the past years many poor people moved over the border to Belgium because life is a lot cheaper there and they are very happy about it.

@@EricvanDorp007 how where we once family? we spoke the flemish dialects like brabantian was incredibly big around that time and dutch language policy tried to destroy it which was a driver for resentment against the dutch government the political isolation even though we where the more developed part of the country and the completely unfair officer ratio way bellow the amount of "southern" soldiers, where almost never in a country with you except under Spanish rule. And when we where in a country with you you fucked it up so bad we started a revolt. so I'm not angry about the past I'm angry about the false idea that we where once close to the dutch. Cuz everything they ever did was at our disadvantage and show the big divide. that being said I don't like modern dutch people either, they are loud they are pushy their government is clearly corrupt (toeslagenaffaire, the reform of the box 3 tax system lowering taxes on property , ...) and keeps getting re-elected.

I think you missed the fact that we the Dutch are members of NATO and the EU.
If one of our allies is attack, we will be at war.
At the moment we have already troops in Romania, Bulgaria and Lithuania. We fight in these countries if needed so we don't need to fight in the Netherlands.

The relation between both is very unique. I don't think there are two other countries in the world this close. We have the best neighbors in the world. Our Dutch brothers, our little Luxembourg, our big French and German sisters. Belgium is like the little cute messy sister. She can work on your nerves very well, but you wouldn't want to miss her. 😂

As a Belgian we don't have issues with the Dutch. There are many simularities but there is a big difference in mentality.
Can u truly use the term of a Belgian mentality caus i think such a thing is non existant since there is a true differance in walonian and flemish people. ( like in NL we have this differance down and above the river rhine where beneath it its more bourgondic like in flemish belgium then above the river)

Both countries have provinces with the same name: there is Noord-Brabant (in The Netherlands), there is Nederlands-Limburg (also in The Netherlands). There is Brabant (Flemish and Walloon in Belgium) and there is Limburg (also in Belgium).

Our country, The Netherlands, is bigger but not better. Its a great privilege we can discuss in the same language, Dutch, at least with Vlaanderen. Both countries should work on a better and more respectful relationship.

Sander, do you realise that there aren't any other countries in the world with a relationship like we have. We basically share everything, even police, army, healthcare,.... The Netherlands had a shortage of teachers and Flanders filled most in. Our hospitals work together, we have 1000's of Dutch people who come to Belgium for surgery, because the Netherlands has a much bigger population and often your hospitals can handle the load of people. Leaving the jokes aside, there is a huge respect between both. And yes, Belgium is perfectly imperfect, but I love my country the way it is. I just would love to see Wallonia at the level of Flanders, with less unemployment, sick leave and a better economy. It's also wrong in many ways to compare both countries, because economy wise they are totally different. Dutch people are born entrepreneurs and dare to take risks, while Belgians has a more service based economy and Belgians are more into science.

Belgium is more social: lower rents, higher government aid if sick or unemployed, social security in Belgium 80€ for a year while 160&180€/month, gas prices alot higher in the Netherlands... Something a lot of people don't realize is that yes we were part of the Netherlands but not for that long. So saying Belgian people are just Dutch because of that is quite disrespectful to our own culture and our history. With that logic just go ahead and call Belgian people Spanish, French or Austrian seeing as we were once part of them too, hell depending on your criteria you can start calling us half the nationalities in Europe so just stop. Just respect our nationality, languages (which is actually 3 national languages not 2 like most people think/say) and culture instead of wanting us to belong to someone else and being oppressed again.

The Netherlands is far better organised than Belgium. As a liberal Dutch politician once said in the 70s (Wiegel); The Netherlands will also function without politicians, because the civil servants are in fact the ones keeping the country going. In Belgium a citizen can feel lucky if there is in fact a parliament after years and years of voting without any outcome. In Belgium the lifestyle has some French aspects, which makes it more loosened up. The joy of life, the wonderful food served in many restaurants, drinking beer and wine during those long, long lunches before going back to work (as in France, Spain and Italy f.e.). I live in Germany, but both Belgium as well as The Netherlands are great countries to visit and to live in. They should consider becoming one country again and combine all particular qualities. @@emmavandriessche8713 I’m Dutch and also really like this idea. We’ll be way more competitive on the world stage. Only problem would be the cultural differences, but in my eyes that doesn’t even have to be a problem since both countries have a lot of immigrants already with different cultures.
NL better organized? Well some things are better organized in NL but others are better in Belgium (for example no waiting lists in the excellent health care system, huge pharmaceutical industry, just to name a few). Both countries have their strong points.
