Practice Notes 33: Warm-Up Exercises That Are Fun to Play
Today's video includes a variety of warmup exercises, including:
-ii/V/I modified Chopin Op. 10 No. 1 exercises (comes from my book of Modified Chopin Exercises, which is part of my Piano Intensive Video Course)
-chromatic scale with fingers 1+2 or 3+4+5
    -pairs of alternate fingers
    -basic scales and arpeggios
**correction: for the first exercise, the pitches in the (V) chord are as follows: ROOT/b7-3-b7-9. So in C Major, those are G/F-B-F-A.

I answer questions LIVE on instagram every Monday at 8pm EST, hope to see you there ☺
I usually like to start my practice sessions with at least 5-10 minutes of warmups. The ones I enjoy are either fun to play or easy to remember (better to be both). They constantly change every few weeks or months or so based on what I am working on, what I come up with, or what sticks with me. For the longest time, I only played the scales and arpeggios that I show in the video, until I got bored of them. They're still pretty fun to play for me, though, and they come in handy.
Some of these might be hard to follow, since the video moves fast and I do not include any sheet music references. I did preferred it that way because I remember these exercises based on the geometry of notes and/or harmonic characters. Hopefully you can take from this one or a few exercises that you might incorporate into your practice.

That's the exact idea behind an étude. It comes from French and literally means "study". They're pieces designed to help you perfect your technique that were also written to sound like beautiful music in its own right! With the added benefit of being much, much less boring. The video even says some of these ideas were taken from Chopin's études.
Of course, the pianist in this video is incredible and is showing what these would look like at high speed. It's best to play them as fast as you can *without making any mistakes* and preferably with a metronome (maybe not all the time, but definitely not never either). If you try to blow through exercises like this at too fast a tempo you'll actually have the opposite effect and ruin your technique, becoming very sloppy and probably also hitting many wrong notes. If you get it down slowly into your "muscle memory", then when you do it faster you don't have to focus on every movement so much because you already know basically how it goes. That way you break it up into periods of learning the actual exercise/technique and then using it to improve your dexterity. It's probably best to think about your dynamics the whole time, though. I don't know, I'm not a piano teacher or anything. I'm just saying that this video basically captures the purpose of an étude, and does so very nicely if I may say so myself

I heard an amazing story during a piano teaching course first half of last year; Busoni was at an evening meal of friends/acquaintances and was asked to play by several of the guests. Apparently he was never keen on providing impromptu entertainment but was eventually persuaded to sit at the piano and he proceeded to play what was described as the most divine and heavenly rendition of scales and arpeggios and his audience was reportedly suitably transfixed. The lesson: approach every note with a sense of love.

Thx for those great ideas! I found a mistake though in the ii-V-I Arpeggios in the V Chord. You showed it as F-B-D-A in the right hand but in the Arpeggio downwards you actually played F-B-F-A, so doubled the 7 and no 5. It feels easier to play like this, but I am not sure about the doubled 7. I am not nitpicking, I was honestly just confused which version to play. Maybe you can help me clearing it up, thx.

Roberto Esquivel I started piano 2 years ago and I can already do these exercises at very fast speeds, you just have to believe in yourself and tell yourself that you can do it. After 2 years I'm already playing Chopins Ocean Etude And Liszt Liebestraum No. 3 and Un Sospiro. You just have to practice.

    • @itseme4779

@@violeta.s.v How did you learn? I started about 16 months ago and have definitely practiced wrong (not really training each section but going from start to finish) and am trying to fix that now, yet still got good results (“repertoire“ of only few songs but “hard“ for my time). Currently struggeling with rachmaninov's cis minor prelude and slowly getting the hang of it (after not injuring my hands anymore -.-). You're pretty much exactly where i want to be after 2 years of experience so i would like to know how you practiced

    • @violeta.s.v
      @violeta.s.v 5 лет назад

It'se me, well I practiced just like every pianist, I learned my scales, arpeggios, sixths, thirds and other techniques on the piano, I would practice for 4 hours a day. Non-stop. I didn't miss a single day of practice. I started to practice for 6 hours on the 7th day of playing piano. That's how it came to be. I don't really know how I got good at the piano that fast. Maybe I'm just a fast learner I don't know. I'm currently learning 2 Chopin etudes (Op. 10 No. 1 In C Major, Op. 25. No. 1 In A Flat Major) which they are both an ARCT level for the Royal Conservatory Of Music (I don't go there but I wish I did), and I'm also learning 2 EXTREMELY DIFFICULT Alkan pieces (Concert Etude In B-Flat Major "Le Preux", Scherzo-Focoso)
But all I did was practice, and the other thing is, I didn't go to a single music school. My parents thought about it but they couldn't afford it. So I learned at home, by myself. Also since I practiced so much without a break, that managed to stretch out my fingers and hand span, I now I can reach an 11th (C To F, not a 4th) comfortably. I'm 13 btw.
