"The South Wales miners' strike of 1984-1985 saw the formation of a curious alliance between a plucky group of young homosexuals from London and miners in Dulais Valley. In Dancing in Dulais, an initial wariness on the part of the young gays, the miners, and the miners' families gives way, through sometimes delicate interactions, to a loving and purposeful solidarity. The unembellished videography captures well this fascinating-to-witness union of two disparate yet ultimately kindred groups. The "Pits and Perverts" benefit concert features the Bronski Beat." I’m a proud bisexual woman from the Neath valley- which conjoins to the Dulais valley, and I have been to Onllwyn many times. I’m so proud of my local people and family for all they did to help the LGBT community and how accepting they were; and I’m so proud of the LGBT community for all they did to help our suffering communities. I’m proud to be Bi and Welsh 💖

I was an active trade unionist in the 80s(I still am) and its difficult to relate how much police harassment there was. my union (the engineers and electricians) tried to collect money on the street of our local town (a new town in Hertfordshire) on a Saturday morning. we lasted less than an hour before the police arrived and stopped us .they claimed we were making an unlicensed street collection. The deputy leader of the local council (conservative) also turned up and claimed that we needed permission to collect ie as in a flag day. we pointed out that we were not shaking tins but had a bucket on the ground where people could donate. didn`t matter. we were told to shove off or be arrested under some public order act and would spend the weekend in the police cells and be up in front of the magistrates on Monday morning. we applied for a license and were told that every Saturday for the next 6 months was booked . so we organised a charity football match .the club that kindly let us use their pitch and clubhouse was out on the edge of town at the end of a country lane; we organised a morning kick off with a lunchtime buffet and a raffle etc. during the lunchtime the police blocked both ends of the lane a breathalysed every driver who came out of the clubhouse carpark.

I have watched Pride many times over the years and it always moves me deeply. This kind of oneness and solidarity is rare and something very special happened at this time and place. We need these lessons now. 'Supporting all communities', it makes sense for all of us.

A friend just recommended the movie Pride to me and I've promised it to myself as a weekend treat. In the meantime he gave me some reading and viewing on the history behind the story. Awe inspiring. We really have to reclaim the value of community and inter-community cooperation. As I often say "I grew up in a community which was part of a society, thanks to Thatcher and Reagan, my son is growing up in an economy".

I've watched this magnificent video today after reading about it in an amazingly eye-opening Guardian article on August 30th which referred to this video as a vital source for the forthcoming film 'Pride' As a Welshman who's always been very interested in the Miners' Strike I'm stunned to find out about this part of the miners' campaign, I was completely unaware of it until now despite having, as a student, stood alongside miners in streets in Wales collecting money. I'm glad here to 'get in early', I think very soon many thousands more people will watch this wonderful video alongside the film. All the people in it are fantastic, but I must single out the mesmerizing Mark Ashton, the young Irishman, who I read died of AIDS soon after this video was made .What charisma he had. What power. What a loss !

I arrived at this video via the same route. As a gay man from the South Wales Valley's (my uncles were striking miners) I am so happy to see that the warm and welcoming attitude I experienced as a gay man in South Wales on film. I've often told my friends here in London how liberal the valleys communities actually are (the assumption was that as macho, working class society, the valleys must be bigoted and narrow minded). I am beyond proud to see that warmth, intelligence and sense of camaraderie captured in this beautiful documentary and the forthcoming film. I echo your comments regarding Mark Ashton. A terrible loss.

+zetaman1984 I have a very similar experience to you. I am from Ystalyfera originally, now living in London. My father and grandparents on both sides were miners. They were involved with the LGSM and can remember the events. You are correct- the Welsh valleys are not as narrow minded as some people think. I had my 40th Birthday party in the British Legion in Ystalyfera and many generations from the community were there. They were completely accepting of me. Watching this film was a powerful and moving experience for me. Its a wonderful testament to humanity and the bridges that can be built. Many generations like myself benefited from the effort people made to combat repression and discrimination.

I have just watched one of the funniest and moving films I have EVER seen. This film is fantastic and very touching. I urge you all to watch it. Here is the preview. It is based on true accounts of how the miners and the gay community came together. What a wonderful testament to humanity.I come from a mining community, my father, and grandparents were all miners. And as I am a gay man, this film was very profound for me.

Watched Pride last night and decided to do some background research, very moving story of solidarity. A testament to the dramatised version is that it has touched two groups of my friends that are poles apart and brought together the unionists and gay people once again.
    Thanks for sharing this

This was so cool, just how I remembered it, I was a Small Town Boy as described by Bronski Beat.
Met my man that year (he was just like 'Bromley'/Joe in the movie) from Brighton Gay Youth Group which was just like the guys above that bookshop. I remember putting money in those buckets and going to that pride event. Did not really understand why the Miners were so behind us till now.
However, 30 years on, there are some states in the USA that are 30 years in the past, just because Europe has moved on, think its every gays duty to stand in the path of retrogressive moves in humanity. Sharing this history, this explains why I am so sensitive to the Bully Russia, Sick Wahabi Islamist, as when you lived thru injustice, you defend those of others even harder.

I watched 'Pride' yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed the film. It took me back to 1984/85 and the alliances that were formed in the face of Thatcher's onslaught. Having now seen this short film it just makes it all the more special. What a fantastic story. It would be wonderful to think that 'Pride' will fill the cinemas and ignite the flame of radicalism in the hearts of the people that watch it. Inspirational!

This video opened up a great insight into recent UK history for me. Coming from the Netherlands, which has the reputation to be a liberal example for diversity and equality etc. etc., I feel humbled by the social engagement shown here and in the film Pride - which I'm planning to see again today. I have lived in the UK since 2005, and have every so often muttered and spluttered to myself about "the country's moral apathy" - but this story has given me (and I'm sure I'm not the only one) good hope that social engagement is still around, waiting to be kickstarted into action. Thank you for posting this.

This is so so great to see - thank you for posting! I too have picked up this link after reading Guardian article, after see in Pride the movie. This is SUCH a brilliant story of solidarity across so called lines of division. I find it so inspiring. Vive LGSM! but, was the group called that in reality, or did it have the word Socialism in the title? (i think your film suggests it was) I can see how the film Pride has stripped some of the politics from the story. Pride is still such an excellent film and i will share this film too as something to watch alongside it. Long Live Mark Ashton.

I want to go to Ollwyn to visit the place where my forebears showed compaction with the Miners of the U.K and to thank the people of the Dulias Valley for marching with us in solidarity in the 29th of June London march of 1985. The gay and lesbian rights motion of the Labour Party was made possible by a pillar of the Ollwyn community, Sian James, who was inspired to take on politics by the Miners support group L.G.S.M, the motion was only passed because of ONE KEY UNION the National Union of Mine Workers.
The times for workers and gay rights could be of been a lot different nowadays if not for these honorable and good people

late to the party...but just saw the movie Pride. My take away from that excellent film and this snippet of the actual events is that we are all just humans, spinning on a rock, there must be a better way to organise humanity/society for the common good than the one we currently have. Live your life, don't be intentionally nasty, and help others when you can if they are in need. Governments are generally full of pricks only motivated by self interest. We all need to survive, we all need to work.
That 80s AIDS ad did way more damage than good. I moved to England in 1985 but still remember that ad as a kid with the tomb stone and the scary voice over. It was definitely prejudicial towards gay men in society with long lasting affects. From the characters in the film, one died at 26 but one was still alive at 65. Writing this comment in 2021 after the covid year and having seen the Dr Sam Bailey discussions on isolating viruses (including AIDS) I'm not sure doctors fully understand the aids virus yet. It can absolutely kill but there is a lot of bias propaganda surrounds the issues.
The world is a complicated place yet still could be so simple...be nice/ don't be a c*nt!
There shouldn't be working class and upper class, shouldn't be bourgeoise and proletariat, should just be humans.
    Screw you Thatcher!
