I remember Alain Delon saying in 1975 that he wanted to play Zorro because his son Anthony loved the character, Alain not just a great actor but also a great father. We love you.

One of the joys of my young life was the night we piled into the station wagon and drove to the Sunset 66 drive in on the legendary route 66 to see Zorro. Thank you for posting this. I remember the theme song well! RIP you absolutely beautiful man, may you return to the essence of all beauty.
Same here, being 9 or 10 and seing this movie in the 70s with my parents at an open air theater at a seaside resort in back then communist Romania. Loved the theme song, I remember it stuck in my head for a long time, came up with my own music "notation" to write it down. Sweet memories

Grew up in China and this movie was a big hit there and still a household favoured one. Alain Delon was such a handsome charming actor who gained a lot attention from Chinese audience particularly women. My mom is a big fan of him. What sad is he've just passed away recently. A giant star finally fell but his legacy lives:)

After a long time, the older version of Zorro. Alan Delon was superb in his role as Zorro. The final sword duel was very, very good. All the actors did their roles convincingly, including Sargent Garcia. Thanks for this gem of a film.

I like all the Zorro films but this is by far the most entertaining version - proceedings never let up from start to finish of the two hours. There are not many which can match this for keeping the audience glued. Alain Delon is total class in his 'duel' role. It is quite camp with Stanley Baker as the excellent foil in a straight role leading the hapless army (somebody having a big dig here for sure). Poor old Garcia, I almost feel sorry for him, humiliated yet spared only to be on the end of a seemingly perpetual cycle of rinse and repeat. The marketplace scene is incredibly well choreographed. Even the corny theme song had me tapping my feet by the end. A really appropriate feeling score in between. And don't forget the amazingly well trained dog; 10/10

This is the first zorro movie I saw and sadly Alain Delong passed away yesterday on Sunday 19 August 2024. He was a real legendary actor.

Yes it's a wonderful version of Zorro! Superhero traditions date back to the Marvel comics of the forties as far as I know (perhaps slightly earlier?) But Zorro in this version is just magnificent: tackling slavery and inhumanity with wit, elan and slapstick humour- all combined to create a cinematic diamond!
Zorro is heavily inspired by The Scarlet Pimpernel, a novel by Baroness Orzcy. Orczy is credited with popularizing the use of a foppish secret identity to throw people off the scent of a heroic alter ego.
Zorro is certainly an important part of that lineage, of course, bridging the gap between Pimpernel and modern day heroes like Batman.
It already has, did you not hear of or the 2 Zorro movies with Antonio Banderas? (1990's)

This film is indirectly responsible for all the superhero stuff we have been bombarded with over the past few decades. Film producer Ilya Salkind watched this and it gave him the idea to produce a film featuring an iconic character. He made Superman 1978 and that resulted in Batman, followed by X-Men, followed by Spider-Man, followed by Iron Man...
It amazes me that a simple fantasy about early Californios has built such a mythic reputation. There were other imaginary heroes displaying different aspects that made the Zorro character. The specific character of Zorro has become a blank canvas for many tales to be told. It appears that each new generation has its own iconic Zorro. The extremely flexible character seems to have a long future for himself. A female Zorro like character had a successful run in The Queen of Swords. I am afraid that a modern woke female Zorro may spoil the soup.
