Getting funded by people that like your content is way better than, "I have eyes of my subscribers - I sell them to advertisers".

I feel the same way, I'd rather get a small in video or in description something that is saying 'Buy my shirts!' or 'Merch: InsertLink' than a preroll or an advertisement.
Buy my shirt is also not direct.
Its more direct than advertising, because you get a bigger piece as the creator, but its still not that much.
For example, a shirt is 20$ and the creator gets 5$.
I think many people have money, more money than they use up, and want to support stuff they like, just to make sure this stuff will keep on existing.
Thats why people love crowdfunding. Pay for stuff, so that awesome stuff can be created.

oh shoot, i was just in japan last week. I was really busy then and missed your other video. I would have loved to meet you in person! I'm slowly learning linux because of my recent purchase of the pi, and you're one of my favorite youtuber sources.
So just went in to put my Patreon contribution in. Either the site is broke or you're getting WAY more contributions than the other channels I enjoy. Congrats if it's the latter! (and yes I still threw in my small drop in the deluge hehehe) Your how-to Linux videos I think are invaluable and we need more people putting Linux into plain English. People need money to live and doing RUclips full time means you need to see a reasonable ROI from your time. I see nothing wrong with getting money from the ads simply by running them before the videos. There is a lot of scummy shit that advertisers do, but a 5 second ad before a video to support people you like isn't much.

Thanks for all you do! Don't listen to the "haters." I think you provide a service and a useful service at that. I think RUclips should definitely do a better job at compensating it's users. I know people will disagree with me, but, RUclips would be nothing without awesome content from its users like you. Keep up the great work.

Good question. It's rare to find sponsors that don't monopolize your time, or require creative control - unfortunately.
Nixie Pixel RedHat is doing well these days. If I were you I would approach their marketing/educational division and see if you can make arrangements that is beneficiary to both parties.

actually the universe is a quantum computer, thus everything is a number even a single hydrogen atom is made out of them, so really your right you are not a single number you are made out of trillions of numbers. matter being the 1's, antimatter being the 0's, and the stuff that disappears being the quantum superstate (1 and 0 at the same time). We can no longer interact with it but it still exists. nothing was created nor destroyed, the particle just went "where the deleted files go". all references to the particle are gone but the energy remains.

(coz of my poor English) Well, just dont doubt, i guess the answer is no! Or may be yes, if he really show his videos are great and really kicks. this is the true nature of things! haha
Well a young guy made over 10k on kickstarter for fucking potato salad, so maybe your opinion here isn't all that valid :-P. It really irks me when people will assume that just because someone has a vagina that is the sole reason they are achieving something. I'm not saying I agree with her choices here on making videos. The reality is that Nikki is very likable and that is what drives the positive reception she has and not the fact she is a girl.
All other factors being equal, an attractive female will gain viewers and subscribers more quickly and substantially than a male in the same situation producing the exact same type and level of content. A fact of life is that men are more prone to having their attention captured by the sight of an attractive female - while women are much more neutral when it comes to looking at members of one gender or the other. If you want an example of this consider that The Amazing Atheist took several years to build up a large following, while it only took Jaclyn Glenn only 1 year to build up a following of a similar size (even though they offer very similar content).

to be honest hiring someone to edit your videos for you is very lazy. You're a youtuber, it is your job to write the material, film it, edit it and upload it. Sure it can be boring but so are most jobs.

I have been angry with Nixie over why she doesn't post videos as often.. Now that I am wide awake and I am glad that Iearnt things this way, I realised that this woman needs our support as a community, which doesn't make her any lesser than whatever she is.. I do admit the looks and 'boobss' part, but then she does a lot of good work which is beyond the intellectual capabilities of most of us.. So, thowo have a problem with the way she is handlng this, plea lay off ad deal with pathetic livesa it is.. We, as Nixie's followers will try infuse as much positive energy as possible...

half a penny?! per view? How much does youtube make per view from advertisers? If I monetized my very few videos expecting to make a living on that alone, I'd be really bad off! You have a pleasing screen presence, you should investigate other venues, maybe like guest appearance in a TV show, a specialty tech news reporter for a local TV channel, and so on. I could easily see you in a sitcom series. I remember two young women who did TV commercials in the 70's and I thought then they could go far, and I was right. One was Farrah Fawcett with Aqua Velva shaving cream, the other was Elizabeth Shue for Burger King. I get the same feeling about you, if you get the right agent, the right product for commercial just for more "face exposure" and then pursue it.

You would be great on a tech channel. Not sure if you would be willing to do that, but I think you would do great on TechnoBuffalo fo example.
Instead of asking for money, just get sponsors. You have a good channel that's informative with a good sized audience. Advertisers will pay you and that will be far less challenging to maintain than getting donations or paid subscribers.

Can we blame this on Google? Since they bought RUclips and gimped it up with google+ and all that real name usage stuff on youtube etc etc... among other bad things they have done... have they also made matters worse for people like you Nixie Pixel? or was this always an issue of RUclips, not with Google being "the new owner"?? You should just get likeminded youtubers together and start a niche video site. RUclips already segregates people in to colonies, so there is truthfully very little discovery happening for the average person, in the way of linux/open source.. most nonlinuxusers probably end up on linux related RUclips videos, via a web site or a link from a friend.
There are enough linux (gaming/computer/tech/etc) fanatics running hosting companies that there has to be a deal out there waiting to be hammered out.
You + Spatry + etc..
Still use RUclips, Vimeo, Dailymotion, etc as it suits you, but form some sort of a portal, so it has more of a network feel. It's pretty easy to run your own embedded videos.. it's just the hosting that kills most site ideas.

people who don't make a profit become angry, especially when you become independent. if you do get shut down and you let everyone know I can be sure that youtube will lose a lot of visitors including me
I think everybody has the right to make a patreon campaign, BUT, when I look at the statistics here, I don't understand the complaining. There are only 5 videos posted here in the last 5 months and the numbers are still very good, compared to other channels. No wonder, that the money is not much. If you want to make money, you just need to make more videos. Not once a month, but one at least every other day.
I think the problem is that she's stuck in catch 22 situation. She wasn't making money off her videos (back when they came out more frequently) so she had to find work. Because she was working, she didn't have time to make as many videos. It's the same thing that happens to a lot of web cartoonists. They don't make enough from the comic to quit their day job, but their day job makes it hard to keep updating their comic regularly which makes it hard to make money from it.
If her Patreon campaign can make enough each month so she wouldn't have to work, she would have more time to make videos. And if she makes more videos (and offer good incentives), she'll get more subscribers.

I don't know because there are many youtubers with a regular day job which are still making videos regularly (once a week or more). Somehow they can do it...
Michael Kehm Some RUclipsrs are organized, well funded, and plan ahead. While others are unorganized, surviving paychecks and doing Improv. As long as you love what your doing, you'll get a long-term supporting audience that knows quality over quantity. If what you do is just quantity, sooner or later you could be the *Henry Bemis* of RUclips.

If you want to be successful on youtube, you need quality AND quantity. Whereas quality is subjective to me because I often get bored with uper perfect edited videos which are lacking substance. I'd rather watch a not so perfect edited and well-lit videos if the content is good. Which means that IMO everybody can make youtube videos (if you have the upload speed ;-) because I think that the production and editing is overrated. But if you don't make enough videos, you'll be getting less and less views, despite the quality of your videos. What does this have to do with patreon? I think if you need patreon to make videos in the first place... is it the right thing for you?

You need to see your views as numbers as well as people. More people donate, more you can keep it as you're career.
But really, you can't hate the RUclips system because the RUclips system is how you got started. You're also using their data farms and their bandwidth for free. So obviously they want more of a cut.
