You can notice the subtle differences he chose with the movie, with his timing and some delivery. But it’s nice to see J.K. making it something fresh yet still carrying the same themes and ideas through to the final cut
Colouring makes such a difference. Here the scenery looks like it's happening in a classroom of my conservatory of music that I go every day to. In the movie, it really has that 'elite' music school feeling and where the ambience is more tense and perfectionist. Incredible.
It is disturbing even if you are not a college drummer. This short film could show some bad professor behavior, but when you had seen the full movie I feel it even more disturbing. The film approve and legitimate abuse, because at the end Neiman plays the "solo of his life". I got serious issues with the movie being a music and jazz aficionado.
I completely disagree, I enjoy the acting and the drama because it have a meaning, there is no movie or story if it don't have a meaning. A movie is a movie because it is communicating something, even if it is a stupid comedy. So according to your point every movie is just hollow acting and drama, not my point of view at all. For sure Whiplash is very well done, the acting is great. However, It still legitimate, approve and even romanticize abuse and the relation between a bully and the bullied.
Diego Sebastián Núñez what was I trying to say is that it's up to the viewer. I focused on his story, but never tried to get any morale or something. That was my point
I agree when you say "it is up to the viewer". When I watch a movie o read a novel, I'm looking for entertainment but also it to say something about the world, not a morale, but how things could be or are. For me, if I focus on the story is not just a hollow purposeless sequence of events, they got a purpose, it is a discourse. The director for sure got a purpose, even if people find another meaning in his art, different of what he is trying to communicate. Isn't that the beauty about art. It could work as a mirror or as cliff when you can see life and the world, even yourself, in perspective. Art is trying to make the viewer think or feel something. Even "stupid comedies" got purpose, those try to make us laugh, isn't them.
The movie's lighting and cinematography in a more orangey, hugging light and a windowless brown room with a style of The Irishman or Godfather gives the viewer the belief that the band and the music they create is something much stricter and serious. It also gives Fletcher more belief of authority and compliance. Here, you do not feel the same as in the film, without a doubt, cinematography expresses a lot when watching it.
When you're working on a tight budget and stricter time constraints in film, you have to make compromises. But he was also figuring it out. You learn a lot from the process of making a short film and he probably made some refinements in the tone he wanted to capture in the feature. What stands out here are the characters and dialogue. It showcases his talent.
This comment of yours sounds too bitchy, unfair, and nitpicky when criticizing something made with a tight budget and almost no time. I wanna see something you made that can be of better quality than this.
Here after re-watching Whiplash, this is amazing... The camera movements, shots, close-ups and even all the lines are almost identical to the full film version! Everyone's talking about the difference but I'm actually really impressed that a short film could be this immersive
I actually prefer the look of the short than the feature-length film. It's a more natural look, as opposed to the highly-stylized, overly processed look. Directors do way too much in post now.
I get what you are saying and i agree for certain films but not this one, the color really stylizes in a way that way you can enjoy the film without being traumatized and also it looks cool on the drums

Wow, everyone is dissing this short so much. Guys, this was the first project. This is where he started with the idea. Of course, the 2014 feature is better than the short. He had more time and money to truly perfect his vision. This is still a pretty damn good short in its own right.
Just a subtle nuance showing director's greatness and adding to the lore: around 12:20 Carl starts to hold his sticks like he was knowing Fletcher's routine and that Nieman's time around the kit is to be cut short momentarily :D
they made this short film first to see if this film could work then they made the feature film. this film was in sundance film festival 1 year before the feature.

The editing especially is so clean and flows so we'll. Also Simmons is just terrifying no matter where he is lol
I like how the actual movie's classroom is darker. It gives a more somber and serious vibe to the story, instead of a bright white classroom that looks like a high school band.
As a big fan of the film, I'm so glad to see this scene was far far better in the movie (because some times is on the contrary, like unused scenes or bloopers cuts in comedy movies that were far better that the cuts they finally used it). Better direction in the film and J.K Simmons here try too hard to get the character (maybe he was working on it)
