- It's three years since allied forces including Australia withdrew from Afghanistan. The chaotic and violent exit followed a 20 year-long battle to liberate the Afghan people from Taliban control. The group has since resumed its oppressive regime, leading Afghanistan into a complex humanitarian crisis.
For women and girls, life in the country is particularly dire. The Taliban has issued at least 70 decrees that directly target their autonomy, rights, and daily lives with severe restrictions on access to education, work, and healthcare.
The United Nations warns the group's restrictions on women and girls will affect generations to come. But a unique visa pathway in Australia is allowing many Afghan women to make use of their skills and education by getting straight into jobs as soon as they resettle.
