  • San Francisco Bay Area has a lot of quirky street names and neighborhoods with unusual pronunciations. Plus we've got some pretty picky preferences when it comes to nicknames and how to refer to places. I've been getting some wrong! How many did you know about?

    San Rafael is San Rah-fell

    Excellent video, but ... one word you should really learn to pronounce correctly is "pronunciation"! It's not "pronounciation."

    • @zarquondam
      @zarquondam Год назад

      Also "Van Go" is NOT the "Dutch way" of pronouncing "Van Gogh." Dutch people have no idea why Americans pronounce "Van Gogh" as "Van Go." (The British say "Van Goff," which is closer but also wrong.)

    I rewatched the Hawaiian style restaurant episode with the guava malasada and chicken katsu. You mentioned "dogpatch" area. Where is this. I've never heard that location term.

    • @ZeeneInRealLife
      @ZeeneInRealLife  4 года назад +1

      Unfortunately that restaurant is now closed :( It's a small neighborhood east of Portrero Hill. When you lived here Dogpatch was very obscure - mostly residential and best known as being HQ for a local Hell's Angels chapter :) (a friend of mine lived down the street from them). I guess due to the low rents, it's become a hot retail/restaurant and start-up area the last decade or so. It's gotten quite gentrified.

    The Avenues was used as collective term for Richmond and Sunset Districts. Valencia St and Valencia Gardens were pronounced "Valencha". Polk Gulch and Eureka Valley are now archaic. South of the Slot was used going way back as a colorful term for South of Market. Little Hollywood is little known, but truly cool, Lots of American flags on patriotic holidays. Saint Mary's Park (neighborhood and actual park) is in danger of cancelation by the Khmer Woke as they labor to enshrine the anti-Christ as king of the world. There was no Design District, Theater District, SOMA, South Beach, South Park, Mission Bay. These were created to boost real estate interests. Or the creative creative industries that has prospered off the tech/real estate/art student/biotech boom.

    Thank you for this. Good to have a review. I think I'm using the preferred version for all of those after 30+ years here, though I'm sure I'm saying St. Helena wrong. You didn't cover "Arguello" which majority seems to be "Ar-gwel-o" while I insist on "Ar-gwey-o". I'll do "Ca-bree-o" as well if I'm feeling grumpy.
    "Cesar Chavez" needs to be with "Ch" like in "Church", but isn't pronounced like Spanish.
    Any neighborhood that takes "District" also takes "The". Adding "Inner" or "Outer" always removes "District."
    I've noticed variety with regard to adding "the" with Inners or Outers, but I always add it in such cases.
    Anything taking "Heights" or "Hill" doesn't take "The".
    I got corrected on CLEM-ent (to the correct cluh-MENT) the first time I went there, and now pronounce it properly.
    People have started adding "The" to "Dogpatch" and it hella bugs me.
    I've never heard anyone say "FiDi" only seen it in print.

    I have never heard of anyone refer to San Mateo county as the "South Bay". It's simply "The Peninsula". Also, the Silicon Valley is NOT San Jose. Silicon Valley (and "South Bay") is Santa Clara County plus arguably small parts parts of southern San Mateo and Alameda counties.

    agree about San Fran. I try to explain to people who aren't from the bay and they don't' get it. it's like going to NYC and calling it Yorkie or some nonsense. you would get weird looks. same here. it just grates. Ghirardelli with hard g is correct. it's also correct in Italian. the whole point of putting the h is to keep the g hard because it would sound like J when preceding I or e.

      It is a class thing. When it was a workingman's town, it was called Frisco, by the working class. Needless to say, times changed and the wealthy preferred " San Francisco". They won the town.

    Ca-BRILL-O is correct. Cabrillo is a Portuguese name and Portuguese pronounce "LL" with a 'L' sound not Spanish 'y' sound.
    Ca-bree-O wipes out Portuguese culture and replaces with Spanish. And that's not culturally nice! And you do such nice videos!

    • @ZeeneInRealLife
      @ZeeneInRealLife  3 года назад

      Interesting! Thanks for the background and you’re right that it’s likely Portuguese. There are so many different cultural influences in S.F. and they do get muddled. Glad you are enjoying the videos!

    It's amazing how much interesting information you pack into your videos. I can't believe I've been saying some of these names incorrectly all these years. Maybe it is I because am in the far Southbay. But also because of the accent. Oddly, I just uploaded a video with my voice narration for the first time a few minutes before watching yours about proper pronunciation. I have a long way to go.

    Down south in LA, we have a peninsula also, the Palos Verdes Peninsula which fun fact the current occupant of the White House built one of his National golf courses on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Ten years ago, my mom and I went to the wedding of family friends @ the golf course which overlooks a few of the holes and the ocean. During dinner, my mom asked one of the servers if he ever came there,my mom had asked it partly curious and partly as a joke. The server said that he was there the previous week.
    Down here , we have a beach in Long Beach called Cabrillo Beach, I think we tend to put a Spanish twang when saying Cabrillo with some of us rolling the r with a trill. Though technically, LA'S south bay is El Segundo , Torrance, Manhattan, Hermosa and Redondo Beach, we add in Hawthorne, Gardena , Long Beach, San Pedro and the aforementioned PV peninsula, Rancho PV , Rolling Hills and PV and Rolling Hills Estates

    I thought you might mention Greenwich, which I used to pronounce as it's spelled, only to find it's pronounced Greenich. With Gough, I think of a golf course. Cabrillo is another one, lol. The most annoying thing I find to this day is, most streets don't have signs at most intersections, and good luck finding addresses, even on a lot of buildings, but sometimes I find the name of a street engraved in the sidewalk (strange). Decades living here and I can't believe this hasn't been resolved. Zeene, this is a fun video and I'm glad to hear you plan to do more.

    How prescient you were about this being a long quarantine: it's April 20, 2021, and we are still in various stages of renormalizing, with each county open, opening, or still closed, depending on the presence of CoVid, etc. Spaced indoor seating allowed in Martinez, spaced outdoor seating in Alameda County. We will get through this!
