one of my friends went to silverstone and got to take a selfie with both you and tommy! how lucky she was... also heard u guys did great on the main stage :)
I don’t think McLaren putting on hards was the wrong option. When they pitted there was 19 laps left, but when the race restarted there were only 14. Dr Marko said after the race that 5 more laps and Lando would have caught Max, so maybe at the time it was the best tire to be on
about McLarens strategy for the restart, even prior to that they discussed with the drivers about the hards, saying it didn't look good but was their best option, later saying they hope they made the right decision,in the end, it worked brill! and hopefully gave them some data about driving on the different compounds with the upgrades, hyped for Hungary!
“No we don’t take no L’s (Charles DNF in France). Spend 5k on the gold and 15k on the pearls, no we don’t take no L’s (Leclerc DNF in Bahrain). Yeah we don’t take no L’s (Charles gets a grid penalty in Jeddah)”. And so on. 😂
I’ll just say we know the hards were not the wrong call for McLaren. Remember that they pitted under the VSC, so Lando would’ve had a buffer to warm them up.
4:55 - yeah, Sainz forgot what even the strategy was at some point, over the radio! "Can you pelase remind me what the plan B was?" :D 8:10 - It's amazing with what confidence they made the hard tyre call. Both drivers - no whining. No trace of doubt. Not doing a gamble one driver soft, the other hard. They knew.
Ah, the sound of Matt and Tommy's voices. I feel it's now ingrained in some Pavlovian response that I should get the ticket up on my phone, and get my bag searched
The Mclaren lights up their tyres really quickly (compared to other teams) so I think Mclaren were confident that the hard would work for them, better than others. But on the flipside it also chews through their tyres really quick so I think it would've been a matter of either try and defend from Hamilton after the restart or defend from a Hamilton charge at the end of the race. I don't think Lando would have been able to attack Max with the softs cause they would have been too concerned about trying to prolong tyre life.
I have been long long suffering this season and last being both a McLaren + Ferrari fan. I am dead inside for Ferrari because without fail you know if things are going well, they will torpedo it with strategy. Finding out at the start of the season McLaren had bungled the car by their own admission just felt like this was going to be a dead season on both accounts, but you NEVER give up hope (or delusions) that your team can pull it out of the bag. The sheer amount of joy I felt in Quali and then seeing Lando lead and then take p2 on Sunday, and Oscar finally being able to show his worth....us fans are just floating on a river of papaya joy. I'm reserving a bit of my elation to see if they can be consistent, but man it feels so good to see them do well!
I think we all thought the same about the hards on McLaren, but we also all have to admit that IF the McLaren fires up the front tires as fast and as well as the commentators think they do, the hards probably saved them from cooking those softs into oblivion. Mediums were by far the best tires in Silverstone. After 3 laps everyone was complaining about how softs were overheating and 2 laps was all it took for McLaren to put those hards into a driveable temperature, just in time for DRS, that probably saved them from an attack from both Mercedes at the later stage of the race. I do wholeheartedly believe everyone on the grid got their hopes up when they saw Russell driving 30 laps on the soft tire while staying within 5-6 seconds from McLaren in the first half the race, putting them under the impression that soft tires were faster than hards even if they were to babysit them. So, looking at it from another perspective, they only had 2 real choices: - Use the softs, being safe through the SC restart but under severe pressure on the later stage of the race due to how much babysitting the softs would need or; - Use the hards, suffer through the first few laps while nobody had DRS and pray that the data from free practice stayed true on how long it'd take to make the hards viable. With all that said, Stella gave everyone the reason why they put hards on both cars (iirc it had something to do with the softs not being ready or something along those lines/issues), so all these discussions are ultimately worthless. Using Lando's words, it worked, so who cares.
I don't know much about tyre strategies yet, but I think hard tyres were a bit of risky or something maneuver. In my opinion, they may be thinking about going on longer if let's say Verstappen pits. But luckily with hard defending of Lando against Hamilton, the hards were obviously difficult but they were suitable to take the hard beating of defence. That's my take.
100% on the cool-down room chat. I've said that to my mates before, it's one of the best bits. Why show it to us, with dodgy, distant audio and only a bit of it. I want big boom mics everywhere in that room, 4k cameras, and I want to see 100% of the post-race chat. SkySports are always like "oh we'll leave that there". No! I want more of that! I can hear from Anthony Davidson later, this is the gold here.
I was really worried when they put hards on, but the hungarian commentators mentioned that their pace on hards during FP was literally on pace with RB, so it made sense.
I think what Zak Brown said regarding the hard tires, or maybe it was Crofty? Someone, at least, was talking about how the McLarens tend to overcook their tires, so the softs would have gone off much too fast on their car.
McLaren have since said that they picked the hard tyres because they were new, and at that point it was just a VSC and so they would have warmed them up fine, but it swapped to a full safety car as Lando was coming in and they didn’t want to risk the chaos of trying to run everyone back in and swap to the softs/have Lando be waiting for them - “organisational problem” is what I think Andrea called it. But regardless, it was a very stressful few laps 😅

Seeing the video being in partnership with Mercedes now shows that P1 has gotten the holy trinity of top 3 teams (at least from 2022): Matt with Ferrari, Tommy with Red Bull, and P1 with Mercedes
I make no secret of it that I would love to see Max smash every single existing record, but if Lando had won the race I would have been in peace with it. For dry conditions it was a good race, and the new rules are starting to show the effect.
one of my friends went to silverstone and got to take a selfie with both you and tommy! how lucky she was... also heard u guys did great on the main stage :)
So close to a Lando pole Matt.
I thought you were crazy predicting that but I was wrong
(12:45) Genuinely surprised this wasn't chosen as Tommy's Taste Tweet, its so good 😅
I don’t think McLaren putting on hards was the wrong option. When they pitted there was 19 laps left, but when the race restarted there were only 14. Dr Marko said after the race that 5 more laps and Lando would have caught Max, so maybe at the time it was the best tire to be on
4:22 Matt, those weren't slippers, those were clown shoes. It makes a lot more sense knowing that lol
about McLarens strategy for the restart, even prior to that they discussed with the drivers about the hards, saying it didn't look good but was their best option, later saying they hope they made the right decision,in the end, it worked brill! and hopefully gave them some data about driving on the different compounds with the upgrades, hyped for Hungary!
All of us in the F1 community love these videos and you two , race week isn't complete until tweets are done lol
14:01 Fernando:at McLaren: Even if we put a rocket ship we'll still be 11.
Lando at McLaren in a rocket ship: P2
Matt's only comfort early in the season was knowing McLaren fans had it worse. Watch them finish ahead of Ferrari by the end of the season 😂😂
Beginning of the season be like: Will Lando leave McLaren?
Now: Oh I love you guys
“No we don’t take no L’s (Charles DNF in France). Spend 5k on the gold and 15k on the pearls, no we don’t take no L’s (Leclerc DNF in Bahrain).
Yeah we don’t take no L’s (Charles gets a grid penalty in Jeddah)”. And so on. 😂
“What was the dice?” Lmao😂
That "Lando attacking a bee" bit is actually a funny call back to his 2020 livestreaming incident involving 2 hornets and a vaccuum cleaner... XD
I’ll just say we know the hards were not the wrong call for McLaren. Remember that they pitted under the VSC, so Lando would’ve had a buffer to warm them up.
4:55 - yeah, Sainz forgot what even the strategy was at some point, over the radio! "Can you pelase remind me what the plan B was?" :D
8:10 - It's amazing with what confidence they made the hard tyre call. Both drivers - no whining. No trace of doubt. Not doing a gamble one driver soft, the other hard. They knew.
“And I will be flipping tables” that sent me 💀
I'm looking forward to this show every race weekend ❤️
I would usually watch these videos but I’ve had enough of your voices through the tannoy all weekend 😂😂😂
Ah, the sound of Matt and Tommy's voices. I feel it's now ingrained in some Pavlovian response that I should get the ticket up on my phone, and get my bag searched
That message was getting more than a little annoying by the time I reached the end of that enormous queue to get in the circuit on Sunday...
6:45 a Mercedes on soft tyres with DRS unable to overtake a McLaren on hard tyres….was just 😮 🤩
The Mclaren lights up their tyres really quickly (compared to other teams) so I think Mclaren were confident that the hard would work for them, better than others.
Was I the only won that noticed that almost all pitstops were 2.4 seconds?
So, looking at it from another perspective, they only had 2 real choices:
- Use the softs, being safe through the SC restart but under severe pressure on the later stage of the race due to how much babysitting the softs would need or;
- Use the hards, suffer through the first few laps while nobody had DRS and pray that the data from free practice stayed true on how long it'd take to make the hards viable.
With all that said, Stella gave everyone the reason why they put hards on both cars (iirc it had something to do with the softs not being ready or something along those lines/issues), so all these discussions are ultimately worthless. Using Lando's words, it worked, so who cares.
Thank you matt for enduring the constant emotional damage at the hands of ferrari and still giving us great content.
ferrari back at it with the pasta-brained strats
His voice box left his body😂😂😂😂
Huge fan from France ! Want you to know you have fans outside of the UK as well. That's how good you are !
Congrats on the turn out when you were on stage, looked so fun
Those were Ferrari clown shoes!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣
I was really worried when they put hards on, but the hungarian commentators mentioned that their pace on hards during FP was literally on pace with RB, so it made sense.
as a Macca fan all the pain this year has been worthwhile
that podcast edit in the cooldown room was TOP TIER! should've won tweet of the week
I will never forget being there and hearing the Lando roar in person. So good. Mentally I’m still there.
i think hards were the right call based on how max and hamilton struggled after a couple laps
Carlos coming on the radio "what was plan b again? I forgot" is all you need to know about ferrari strategy
If McLaren do well at Hungary we can feel comfortable that they have a competitive car again.
The Ferrari dedication has reached Matt's nose
