  • In this first part of the 1982 classic, psychologists B.F. Skinner and Robert Epstein demonstrate how pigeons can be trained to exhibit behaviors that appear to mimic advanced human cognitive abilities-such as problem-solving, imitation, and symbolic communication. Skinner’s groundbreaking work in behaviorism is on full display, revealing how even complex actions in animals (and humans) are simply conditioned responses-mechanical reactions driven by environmental stimuli, not conscious thought.
Through these experiments, Skinner and Epstein challenge our understanding of learning, intelligence, and free will, showing that what we consider 'self-awareness' or 'insight' is nothing more than an automatic biological response.
► Watch how the illusion of intelligence is deconstructed one pigeon at a time, as Skinner and Epstein delve into the cold, mechanical truth behind behavior.

"Simple external stimuli can produce, seemingly very complicated language like behaviors in simple organisms." It's crazy, right? We've got this grand idea that we're somehow above everything else, when really all animals, from bacteria to the largest organism like Pando, are operating on the same damn mechanics. We think this energy soup exchange on this tiny speck of a planet is something special. But my dog and cat understand symbols and language too. I say come, they come. I say sit, they sit. I point my finger, and they know they’re in trouble. What else is there to it? They use their own signs-body movements, barks, meows... conveying their desires and shit back to me. And between themselves, they communicate even more, using signs we don’t get. Smells, vibrations, sounds, and other senses that fall outside of our limited perception. Even trees communicate. So it’s baffling... comically baffling... how people can’t see the simplest things and still think our way of talking, our language, or this so-called “intelligence” is exclusive to us, like we're something special. We've got paid, dressed-up clowns parading around as scientists, trying to explain all this crap. We’re always looking at everything from the wrong angle, because we’re so sucked into this inflation of thought that we’ve completely overcomplicated everything. Just running rampage with this exaggerated sense of importance. All this so-called intelligence is nothing more than fancy tricks, while nature just keeps on doing what it's always done... without the circus.
