Hi Ian, Tony here from Australia, I went to a building site went through the off cut bins with permission of course. Got some great thick offcuts I made a mould. My biggest hold up was trying to duplicate your shape. Mine has nice rounded bottom corners but I couldn't replicate your gradual taper up to the top of the Pouch. So mine is a little more square. I found it annoying but I said to myself "SELF" this is the birth of your style. I'm a War veteran served in Somalia lost a lot of hearing your Video's have inspired me to get into Leather Craft thanks very informative. I don't have many tools at this point but it is amazing how we can improvise when we need to.

The high end, professional attitude with seeking help from other entrepreneurs:Laser cuts, buckles etc. And the tools your using. No matter what field you would have done this tutorial about, its a god damn, top end, rolemodel performance! GREAT VIDEO from an old leather worker of some 60 years. I am surprised though at the fact that you slit the front, after your very good lecture about belt slits earlier in the vid, instead of putting an appliqué loop there.
I'm thinking it's okay in this case because those slits wouldn't see hard use, it's more decorative. It's the buckle part that would be fastened and unfastened a lot.

I like the long videos. The more details the better. I have been working with leather for over 30 years so not much is new to me but every once in a while there is a little tid bit that I can use. I mostly hand form around a last.and use weights (sand bags) to make formed leather, It is a lot faster but if your not careful.you.can get wrinkles. I might try your way out.

Awesome video, thanks a bunch. Made a mould for a double magazine carrier and pressed the works in my clicker press. Was so easy on on this type project I could kick myself in the butt for not thinking of that myself. Came out perfect first time. This was definitely something that just opened up a whole new angle on things. Now if you get some tutorials up on good ways for laying on a nice finish without having to clean an airbrush every time, I'm all ears. Great vid!

Ian, thanks for this great video. I've never done leatherwork, but I love watching and learning from craftsmanship. This video reminds me of some of the great TV shows I used to watch like "New Yankee Workshop". The production quality was great, and it was a really entertaining and educational video. Amazing work.
You do excellent work, and I only offer this suggestion as a tip to glue complicated pieces together. When I need to glue two surfaces together after I have put contact cement on both of them, I use a piece of wax paper to cover most of the glued surfaces. As I start to press them together, matching lines like you did, I slide the wax paper away as I go. You have done this enough you can do it by eye, but more than once I have misaligned contact cemented surfaces, and have had to take them apart and re-glue them.
I didn't realize it was so difficult to mould the leather around something, but the depth of the bag really seemed to make it much more difficult than the little sheath's you have made. Beautiful little bag. Great vid.

Very nice work. I've recently thought about taking up leather work as a hobby since I had a career ending injury. If I get good enough to sell anything , then all the better. Sometimes I just don't know what tools to buy first. Or even the best quality tools to aquire. Thanks for the video

Ian Atkinson lol, I'm all good mate thanks, a tad bleary eyed though but full of of project ideas I could utilise at work. We use strong nylon pouches as a rule but I do prefer leather for heavy duty use, so I'll give it a crack and get stuck into it. Trial and error will be the order of the day methinks ! Very informative and inspiring! Personally, I'm very far from actually doing these things and I don't know if I ever will (sewing fabric is enough for me for now), but thanks for the insight. It makes you appreciate all the hand-made leather goods that one might encounter from now on. I'm really surprised at the number of different tools that you so skilfully use.
If you soak leather for moulding it can be hard to judge the moisture content for stamping so I would let it dry completely (so off the mould) then after a few days re-case the front and do your stamping. It would work best with a solid surface under the front so an anvil for example.

One tip, I would radius the bottom of the opening in the outer clamp ring where it contacts the corner of the leather so it doesen't crimp so sharply. Really enjoy your videos!
Best tuts on RUclips! Mr.Atkinson. in one of your knife sheath tuts you mentioned the friction sheath was not for a Swiss army knife. OK, how about making a pouch for a Swiss army knife, that makes it easy to get the knife out of the pouch. Also I hope the makers of the products you use in your tuts subsidize you- they should. Wow. Very informative. I'm an upholster by trade so have done a little leather work, but nothing like this. I inherited a leather workers toolkit and often wondered what some of the stuff was, this video and you tool suggestion one have answered all my questions. Apart from a pricker and bone burnisher it appears I've got a good set. Most of the hides I have are very much lighter, upholstery weight, but I do have one and a half 3mm hides that I acquired in the dim and distant past. I'm a keen woodworker so combining all of this can you guess what I will be making in the New Year? Cheers Ian, you have inspired me.
No, If you case leather for tooling it can need dampening again but if you soak a piece in the sink to do this sort of thing it should be plenty soaked while you need it to be. It takes days to dry out not minutes.
Love this pouch and really appreciate the video. I'm a fairly novice leather hobbyist and probably shouldn't have taken this on, but, oh well. I managed to come up with an inner mold that I like and which (surprisingly to me) actually resembles your mold, if a bit deeper (back to top piece) and squattier (closed side to open side). I am now on molding attempt #3. I need to double-check my leather thickness because in watching this for the sixth or seventh time, I notice that your leather is juuust a bit thinner (I think) than what I'm trying to manipulate and the molding process thus far has been a real exercise in frustration. Your repeated warnings about cutting too deeply on the darts were heeded, but I still found myself ruining attempt number one while trying to get enough tension release to get the leather to form. However, I know I'm having a blast when, after glaring at the video and smoking a cigar, I find myself drawn back to attempt another molding. Thanks again for sharing this video and your expertise.

How did I slit the front? Not sure what you mean.

Besides being more decorative, these slits offer no risk of dropping small objects.

Scott Gardner parchment paper also works well for this. Haven’t found an adhesive yet that sticks to it
