    My mom and I visited Austria last year and enjoyed every minute of it. And AUA is an excellent airline. I like everything about them from the red and sky blue color schemes to the flight attendants.

      actually this blue on the aircrafts belly is not meant to be a 'sky-blue'. it stands for the biggest river in austria wich also flows through vienna - river danube :)

      Noah, I checked Google Maps...They call it the Danube...Is it one is in German and the other is in English and they call it the same thing?

      Danube => english / Donau => german // yes of course it‘s the same river ^^
      And the deboarding via bus is not standard in vienna. Normally you dock right to Terminal 3 with AUA long haul flights. Maybe your gate was blocked or they had troubles at the international arrival level at Terminal 3.
      Regards from Vienna

    My wife & I will be taking the same flight (same flight# and type aircraft) from Chicago to Vienna next month on our way to Cairo. We've flown on an American Airlines 777 non-stop from Chicago to Rome, the 777 that you show in your video looks much cleaner and appears to have a better in-flight entertainment system. Many thanks for the Vid!

      Finkworld Your welcome! You’ll enjoy their service! US carriers planes are usually 2-2.5x the age of USA carriers. I just flew United on a plane that was 27 years old. Ugh. The FA on a recent long-haul flight were crabby crabapples who were more interested in not being service oriented - it was a US carrier of course

    I took that same flight in 2013, when they were using a 767-300ER, and was quite puzzled by the arrival in Vienna. Passengers had to walk down exterior stairways & board buses, just as you did, rather than through a boarding bridge into the Terminal. As I walk with crutches, they insisted I go out another door (on the opposite side of the plane) with the wheelchair dependent passengers, and into a bus on scissor jacks, which then lowered & drove off to the terminal.
    When it was time to fly on to Odesa, on a Ukrainian International 737, we went down a boarding bridge from the gate, just like you do at most airports. It was never explained why the Austrian plane disembarked onto the tarmac instead of using a boarding bridge, but it seemed to be that way for quite a few other flights as well. Do they have a lack of Gates at Vienna, or just not enough of them with boarding bridges??
    Other than the odd disembarkation, that Austrian flight was the nicest I ever took, and even with my cheap Economy Class tickert, was treated like a King.. The food was FABULOUS !! 3 meals in a 9 hr flight....

  • @rodolpho979
    @rodolpho979 5 лет назад

    Hello Swissclimber1... one of your last comments/question: why do (some) planes disembark passengers on the tarmac with bus connection to the terminal bldg.? As far as I know it has to do with availability of fingers and priority for other aircraft types or flights or even rush hours (!?). Over here (in São Paulo, Brazil) we name this procedure as remote parking. When boarding or disembarking from our domestic flights I really don't mind but I have already experienced such procedure coming out from big intercontinental aircrafts and it's rather uncomfortable considering your cabing baggage, duty free bag, coat, etc.
    I have been in Austria twice (Innbruck & Vienna) but never flew AUA...

    • @swissclimber1
      @swissclimber1  5 лет назад

      Thanks for the heads-up. Aircraft can be turned around in a few hours. If the US inbound flight to Austria arrives at 9am they would turn around around at Noon or 1pm. I still feel it has something to do with saving money. Cheaper to disembark off-site. Especially since there were many gates that were not being used.

      I'm sure you can get it. But, it's better to try regional or even sub-regional beers. Beers tend to be quite local. They probably taste better than the national brands. Stiegl is good but there are better Austrian beers that are smaller in nature

      Do you mean 2-4-2 is better on this airline, considering most of the plane in economy class is 3-4-3? I'm large and looking for leg room without $$$.

    • @meowmeow4413
      @meowmeow4413 6 лет назад

      Other economy is usually 3-3-3 configuration. You probably already found out, the 2-4-2 configuration does not give more leg room than the 3-3-3. However if one were seated on the window section with only 2 person, it gives the impression of being more spacious.

      @swissclimber1  8 лет назад

      I can't quite figure it out...I think they do this for 1) security 2) effeciency - leaving the gates only for boarding 3) immigration ---- easy to bring pax to the building where immigration officers are out vs. walking long way to get there

    • @jankolba3133

      I flew on the same flight two weeks ago and we were also bused to the terminal. It was suprising as I thought the long-haul flights always get a gate. I dont know why it was that way. The only reason I can think of is that all the US flights come to Vienna approximately at the same time and they dont have enough gates for all of them.

    • @nemanjasukalo3789
      @nemanjasukalo3789 7 лет назад

      We were also bused to the terminal but I think it's because our B763 went to DEL a few hours after. No point in attaching it to the air-bridges so that it sits there for 4, 5 hours.

      @@swissclimber1 yeah... they've introduced a premium economy cabin which is 8 abreast vs 10 abreast in regular steerage. I had a bit of a hard time upgrading because I'd booked through United. I was too late to upgrade as a result but I managed to get a window seat where nobody was occupying the middle seat. While I did preorder a fancy meal hot meals were served otherwise though breakfast was nothing more than muffins and pastries. As for economy seat pitch I was a bit disappointed how people were crammed in given the average height of Austrians is in the 6ft/183cm range. As I said before I lucked out by picking a row with the dreaded middle seat being vacant.

    • @swissclimber1
      @swissclimber1  7 лет назад

      You are absolutely correct. That is why the airline has an obligation to book you on the next available flight. You may even get complementary meal / drink tickets if you miss your connection. Vienna is a great airport. They have lie flat sofas and plenty of them.

      My final destination will be Ukraine and on the way back to America, I will be having an 18 hour layover in Vienna. I am not an experienced traveler so I am planning on staying at the airport the entire time since I do not want to risk getting lost in Vienna and missing my flight. Is there any place to rest there and possibly sleep? I realize that your time spent there was probably during the day but if I could manage to sleep at least a little, it would make the layover much more tolerable. Thank you again for your help.

Perhaps the usual gate for the incomin Chicago flight was blocked by a late outgoing flight.

    You seem to have taken the green CAT train to get to Wien Mitte station. Just an advice: try the Schnellbahn (S-Bahn) next time. It departs from platform 2 from Vienna airport station and costs only about 3,50 Euros. The CAT and the S-Bahn use identical tracks. The only difference are a few stops on its way to Vienna as it is a standard Austrian suburban train. Just look for a train with destination Floridsdorf. It takes about 30 minutes to get to Wien Mitte. Or try the railjet (Austrian high speed train) of the Federal Railways to Vienna Main Station for the same price in just 15 minutes. The train system here can be a bit crazy and confusing, but it's very good. :)
