It's amazing that in this world of high-tech gadgetry, that these guys can literally heat and hammer (with brute strength and not data) solid steel into such perfect shapes. I hope I'm still on this planet when she's ready to fire.
I’ve been a small, monthly contributor since before any parts were made. Searching for the plans. The mock-up of the BoxPok wheel. The pouring of the brass 5550 plate. The headlight. The first real pour; the wheel… I’m amazed to see this progress and hope to see it on the road. “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.”

I think that 5550 will be the future template for commercial passenger locomotives, and travel as a whole, if oil continues down its projected path. Feel proud, you're hammering together the future.
Firebox construction starts with fire and ends with fire! Looks awesome. Glad this is actually happening! I'll admit I had my doubts this project would get too far off the ground. I'm glad I was wrong!
It's amazing that this is going to be the first new half new locomotive steam locomotive in the United States. What I mean by half New is because they got a used tender but still a brand new steam locomotive 👍👍
If I'm not mistaken even a K4 pacific has something like a 72 square foot firebox. They're about the size of a medium sized closet. Or a small closet if you're a woman.
Larger heating area. Very common on British locomotives, only ever really used in the US on the Pennsylvania, far from 'standard' for the standard railroad of the world.
This HAS to be the worlds first From-Scratch construction of an oldie steamer being built in the 21st century. And shes a Duplex no less! Guys, whatever you can do, do it to the max and show Amtrak: Steams not licked yet!
The whistle they have is one that was preserved from a T1 in a scrap line, shortly before she got the torch. It's an original PRR 3 chime! It's the one you hear in the video.
@@jacobramsey7624 No problem. To my knowledge, no bells were preserved. It will probably be re-cast from brass stock using prr blueprints. PRR preserved A LOT of their drawings, so there may be some for the T1's bell. Thought it was probably a standard pneumatic bell like what's on 1361.
Oxidizing elements from welding torches and the manufacturing process. It doesn't matter, it's only on the surface. Once it's finished it will be sanded and coated. Not to mention shrouded in streamlining and lagging.
Brilliant work 👏, I feel they will succeed in building this Goliath of the rails. The hardest part will be finding somebody with a big enough set of cojones to drive her @100mph+ 🤣.
That’s a good looking firebox, but if you want to go for a more advanced approach, why not look into building a GPCS firebox to make it more eco-friendly? Same question regarding the PRR K4 overhaul project over in Altoona.
