    It's amazing that in this world of high-tech gadgetry, that these guys can literally heat and hammer (with brute strength and not data) solid steel into such perfect shapes. I hope I'm still on this planet when she's ready to fire.

    That firebox is HUGE!! I never knew how big the t1s firebox was!

      About 95 sq ft grate area and a large combustion chamber. It’s great seeing it come together!

    I’ve been a small, monthly contributor since before any parts were made. Searching for the plans. The mock-up of the BoxPok wheel. The pouring of the brass 5550 plate. The headlight. The first real pour; the wheel…
    I’m amazed to see this progress and hope to see it on the road.

    That’s one huge firebox! I can’t wait to see how it looks like when the boiler is attached! Then it would look like the same boiler from the one from the 20th century!

    I'm going to be absolutely amazed if you manage to pull this off. I've been a rail fan since I was a kid and there were 2 engines I fond over, the big boy, and this.

    Wonderfull to see, this big project goes on and on, step by step. I cross my fingers for all the people who are involved. I think it might be a long way to finish it, but I am happy to see, there are still craftsman who are able to do it. If I where you, I would call this Engine "Phoenix". Burnd in a scrapyard to ashes, and now it goes back to life.

    I think that 5550 will be the future template for commercial passenger locomotives, and travel as a whole, if oil continues down its projected path. Feel proud, you're hammering together the future.

    Firebox construction starts with fire and ends with fire! Looks awesome. Glad this is actually happening! I'll admit I had my doubts this project would get too far off the ground. I'm glad I was wrong!

    It's amazing that this is going to be the first new half new locomotive steam locomotive in the United States. What I mean by half New is because they got a used tender but still a brand new steam locomotive 👍👍

      If I'm not mistaken even a K4 pacific has something like a 72 square foot firebox. They're about the size of a medium sized closet. Or a small closet if you're a woman.

      Larger heating area. Very common on British locomotives, only ever really used in the US on the Pennsylvania, far from 'standard' for the standard railroad of the world.

    Looking good!!! Question, what kind of whistle and Bell did the T1 have and are there any surviving that you know of that can be put on the 5550?

      The whistle they have is one that was preserved from a T1 in a scrap line, shortly before she got the torch. It's an original PRR 3 chime! It's the one you hear in the video.

      @@jacobramsey7624 No problem. To my knowledge, no bells were preserved. It will probably be re-cast from brass stock using prr blueprints. PRR preserved A LOT of their drawings, so there may be some for the T1's bell. Thought it was probably a standard pneumatic bell like what's on 1361.

      Oxidizing elements from welding torches and the manufacturing process. It doesn't matter, it's only on the surface. Once it's finished it will be sanded and coated. Not to mention shrouded in streamlining and lagging.

    That’s a good looking firebox, but if you want to go for a more advanced approach, why not look into building a GPCS firebox to make it more eco-friendly? Same question regarding the PRR K4 overhaul project over in Altoona.

      Wrong. The new T1 will have B2 Rotary Cam poppet valves, better than B1 valves.
