  • I caught my fin on a rock and buckled the tail of my longboard. This prompted me to repair a bunch of other damaged areas on the nose and bottom, then finishing the restoration by redoing the paint and applying a gloss coat.
I've done relatively simple repairs in the past, I'm not a professional, so this is intended for a Do It Yourselfer facing similar issues. Hopefully this will provide some ideas, and also insight on what to expect. Besides the materials and techniques used, what you'll need is time and patience.
I'm pleased with my results, the board is strong, watertight, and looks much better than what I started with.
I ordered much of my supplies from:
    fiberglasssupp...
    greenlightsurf...
    www.cleanlines...
The polyester opaque colors I ordered on Amazon:
    www.amazon.com...
    Music is courtesy of:
    Salmonella Dub: "Problems"
    Johnny A: "Oh Yea"
    Joe Bonamassa: "Drive"
    Grover Washington Jr.: Winelight
Thanks for watching. Good luck with your repairs.

I agree that trying to color match a curing product is too hard to predict. Paint or dye is the best way to color correct and match. Then put on a surface coat over that. Nice job.

Excellent job, great explanation as well as the quality of the video. I'm mid way repairing couple of my shortboards, your video is great help on understanding what I need to do and how to do it. Thanks for your content

I have just watched several board repair tutorials, and yours was easily the best by a long margin. Simple to follow, aimed at beginners like me (repair beginner), and so well explained, with the important details included. Well done! On a separate note, I have an old 9'2 that I bought for just 11$. It's got about 8 big (3-4 inch) repairs needed, but the fin plugs, and leash plug are all ok, the top deck is good and the bottom deck looks like it is in a similar state to yours. I am undertaking an almost identical project to yours, except I don't need to colour-match, thankfully, as the board is completely plain. I hope my repairs turn out as nice as yours did.

Thanks Bob! I've been thinking about how to route the fin box without a jig and your "fence" thing seems to be a winner for me!

Wow man, great job. Got a couple of boards that need color matching, and I found that your beginner-friendly and detailed explanations of each step are unmatched across youtube. Also, I dig your living room conversion to workshop!

Very nice work! I did some minor repair on a used board I found for my son in law for Christmas and a minor chip on my daughter's board that had a custom airbrush shaded graphic. I am lucky that my daughter has a lot of art classes and experience behind her. She nailed the color matching where we used some acrylic artists paint she had that I then cleared over. Color matching truly is an art form and you did great! Both of these boards are epoxy and the repairs were very small and cosmetic only so no glassing or full gloss coating.

If you first spray the masking tape with clear coat the color spray won't blead under the tape. 😉

Is there a reason there was no fiberglass over the new finbox? Also, after applying spray paint color you have to resend the paint before glassing?
