- I got a weathered and split piece of walnut from a friend. Walnut is too good to pass up, even if it has splits through it. So I'm going to turn this log into a bowl. Even if it kills both of us.

I like the cracks; gives the bowl some unique character. And once again, you took a piece of wood that I would've tossed into the barn stove and turned it into something beautiful.
Thank you , B.
A lot of people forget the human aspect when making RUclips videos. Rick Turns hasn't and these videos are a great watch with their gentle humour.
Thank, Graham.
One of these days I hope to have half the talent you have for turning bowls. I have been watching your videos, and relaying on a shop class I took 35 to 40 years ago. I am getting ready to get out and make the chips fly. I think I will catch on soon, because we both have the same style of safety toed sandels LOL this bowl turn out real nice.
Yes, there aren't many woodturners who use safety sandals. Everyone should, but some people just aren't safety conscious like you and I. Thanks for watching, Christopher.
Love your sense of humor and I love your craftsmanship, beautiful work!
Oh... And you even mentioned my name! Lol
Thanks for watching and commenting, Timothy.
You, Sir, are a master of the scraper. Thanks again, very enjoyable to watch you make a beautiful bowl from a Blivot.
Thank you, Don.
You say it turned out pretty good. I think it's a work of art. You're a true craftsman Rick.
Thank you, William.
I agree with everybody
The special effects are a nice and different effect
Your bowl would be a nice touch on a dinner event with salad or fruit
And from one grandpa to another your a special grandpa like me
Far and few we are
Thank you for sharing looking forward to your next project
Thank you, Greg.
I have no clue how I've come across your channel but I'm so glad that I did. You sir are master of your craft and F'ing hilarious! Thank you!
Thank you, J!
Beautiful! I knew you could do it ! Thank you.
Thanks for watching, Charlie.
much respect to you my friend for not giving up on beautiful walnut like that most people would of just burned it or cut up into small pen blanks, great video!
Thank you, Afshin.
Wow, what a beautiful bowl it turned into in the end!
Thanks for watching and commenting, Erin.
I lost count on how many times you slapped the Walnut. Nice lightning strike.
Like the bowl alot...nice and thanks for sharing.
Thanks, Ron.
Very nice. I like the lines. Great intro.
Thank you, Bob.
Beautiful bowl...I love walnut!
Thank you, Carol.
Split wood just scares me to death. I have a lot of very old firewood, some of it spalted, but don't dare turn it...pretty brave to do that!
Yep, I'm gutsy, with no sense of self-preservation at all. Thanks for watching.
Great job Rick!
Thank you, John.
The bowl turned out well despite the cracks. Always entertaining videos.
Thank you, Dan.
What a character. This guy's a goofball
I pride myself on my goofability. Thanks for watching.
Very nice!
Thank you!
Hahaha hahaha!! That was so funny I loved your intro.. Now let's get serious and make a bowl.
As soon as I get my workshop built (I recently moved from Georgia to Maryland), I will make a serious bowl. :-)
So funny! Where I live we have tremendous thunderstorms. I thought at first you were serious because the thunder sounded just like what we hear.
Thanks for watching, K.
Would love to see more close up shots of the finished product at the end, however it's a good video, good fun, instructive and encourages us mortals to be more adventurous. Thanks
Thank you, Kevin. I will incorporate more closeups of the finished turning in future videos.
Enjoyed and gave it a thumbs up also
Thank you, Russell.
Really nice job it looks lovely
Thank you, Paul.
Nice bowl
And thank you once more for watching my videos, Raymond.
Turned out cool Rick. . Good job 👍
Thank you, Andy.
I love the video great job. Always brings a smile to my face
Thank you, Guil.
Such a beautiful piece. I watch a lot of wood turning videos and each time they inspire me more and more to start this as my own hobby. I love trades and working with my hands. I was one of those kids who were always building car models or any kind of model and always playing with LEGO.
My only carpentry experience is building and installing custom wood stairs. So I don’t have any experience with a lathe, is there any tips you or anyone else could give someone like myself?
It's actually not that hard, and doesn't have to be tremendously expensive. I believe Mike Waldt's channel has around a dozen videos directly aimed at the beginning woodturner. Here's a link to the first of them: ruclips.net/video/S8KrtPQfXQ0/видео.html
I watch Mike's videos a lot, and have learned a lot from them. You might also want to check out WyomingWoodturner channel (Sam Angelo) - he has a lot of very good videos that focus on the basics. Thanks for watching, Cole.
My wife yells at me when she sees me working in the shop in my sandals. But I just tell her " but honey, Rick Turns wears sandals and he has all his toes."
I didn’t think about my footwear until I was editing the video. That’s when I noticed it...it was rather distracting. I have now vowed to wear proper woodturning shoes in the future. (But you don’t have to tell your wife that!)
Don't change a thing Rick, love your work and videos.
@Rick Turns .. I thought they were Safety Sandals
Lovely looking bowl Rick .... and your video skills are very enjoyable my friend :)
Take care
Mike
Thanks, Mike!
Thank you for sharing a wonderful bowl that started out as, perhaps, a throw away log. But the beauty in the end is amazing!
Could you please add to your videos the name and size of the gouge?
Thank you, Larry. I plan to get that information into the videos - I forgot to do so on this one.
👍So very nice👍Thanks✌️
🍲 🍲 🍲
Also, the HD video looks so very nice and clear!!!!’
you must have a hell of a camera✌️
Thank you!
Beautiful piece. Love your intros.
Thanks, Deanna. Have you got your woodturning area set up yet?
Its not far from being done. Electric and A/C still needed, then I can use it. Its been about 110, so no outside turning. Soon, fingers crossed. I am going crazy!
Great job on the special effects and humor.
Thanks, Mike!
Great bit of turning Rick,be careful, humour like that can get you a nice straight-jacket. Hate to see you having to broadcast a- la "One flew over the cuckoo's nest"!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
Thank you. Alan.
Too funny Rick!,,
Thank you, Samantha.
Wood savings between the toes can't be very comfortable. 😂😂
True. After this project, I started wearing shoes all the time.
Wow!
Hell from Liverpool in England
Thanks, Irene.
OMG!! I almost peed my pants! Did your grandkids see this? Oh Jeez... I'm still shakin'.
The grand kids are still afraid of thunder. I had to lock them out of the shop. Thanks for watching, Wayne.
Hi ,that’s one hell of a monster shear scraper ! , is there any angle that it doesn’t work at , good video thanks and stay safe 🦖
Thanks for watching, Arturo.
Hollowing sounded like audio from "Ghostbusters" or "The Amityville Horror". I'm afraid I would have "abandoned shop" had I been observing.
Enjoyed it, though.
Thank you, John.
Very nice job my friend 👍🏼
Thank you, Tomas.
You need to seriously get that roof fixed. :-) Nice turning there.
Thank you, Gary.
Have you ever considered a bowl saver? There was plenty of wood to carve out a smaller bowl rather than making loads of chips of such nice wood...
You’re right, Orion. It would be nice to have a bowl saver, but they’re pretty expensive!
At first thought, kinda corny, looked like something my silly ass would do if I could make a video like this because I too like to make people laugh. You earned my respect with your turning abilities though, nice bowl, good narration and excellent video (antics included). 😏
Thank you, Robert.
I'm impressed with all the upper body safety gear, but what's with the open toe sandals is the workshop??
I didn’t even think about what I was wearing when I shot this video, and it wasn’t until after I published it that I noticed I was wearing my sandals. Since then, I’ve been more careful to wear appropriate footwear while shooting my turning videos. Thanks for all your comments, superjanc.
Great big bowl turned out. See the manufacturing process is interesting.
Thank you, Aleksey.
Rick - I might have been able to pay more attention to this video if I wasn't so busy trying to read your t-shirts. I don't know which is more importanter - watching the vid or reading the shirts?
Reading the shirts is defiantly more importanter! Thanks for watching, Scott.
had the same problem, falk !! ;)
Why use the scraper to hollow out the bowl? I'm a total novice, trying to learn as much as I can!
Hi, Joe. When I'm shooting video, I use a scraper because it doesn't obscure the bowl interior and cutting edge. When I'm not shooting video, I use a bowl gouge, because it doesn't tear the grain as much as a scraper. The scraper is generally easier to use when hollowing bowls, though.
Nice piece of work.
Have you ever tried oil sanding with something like 400 grit wet-or-dry paper?
By the way, watching you work sometimes reminds me
of someone trying to light a smoke
with a little piece of dynamite.
There's nothing like a little dynamite to make things interesting! Thanks for watching, J.
Some may complain about the theatrical productions, but while campy, they do entertain some others. I'd be among those to do find some amusement.
Campy? I was actually going for Shakespearean. Thanks, Katzztar.
The dramatic effect twas there. Alas, the dramatic speech twas not!
Great video Rick. Would have been much better if the audio and video were both in sync. But I do like the bowl.
I didn’t notice that the audio was out+of-sync....where did that occur?
Rick Turns About half way through Rick. But it may not be on your end. Your next video I watched did the same thing. So I went back and started the videos over and everything was fine. Not sure what happened. But I still enjoyed the videos.
Nice bowl, use it for the salad and use the lump of charcoal to grill the steaks.
Thanks, Harry.
I was wondering if I could have that rikon mini lathe since I remember you telling me that you don’t use it and I just want another lathe that can make bigger bowls on and I cant really afford another one
Hi, Levi. True, I don’t use my small lathe much, but I’m not ready to get rid of it. I bought it primarily so that I would have a portable lathe that I could take places to do demonstrations. Thanks for watching my videos!
How is it that part of the exterior was dark and shiny and the rest was matte before using the shear scraper?
I'm not sure. Could you give me a time reference in the video when that happens? I'll check the video at that point and see if I can answer your question.
@@RickTurnsWoodturning At 6:07 part of it is dark and shiny compared to the rest. I was just wondering how that is?
Sorry for the delay in replying. I thought the message had sent but it apparently did not. That dark splotch on the bowl is where I dripped CA glue into some cracks. Final shear scraping and then sanding removed the splotch.
Fun video! Question, did you adjust the lathe speed when burning in the lines? Thanks.
I think I did. That moment was cut from the video. I believe I raised it to about 1000 rpm. Thanks for watching, Deb.
I thought at the first you were going to try and turn my wife’s pot roast! I’ve considered it myself but not sure my tools could take it...
One must be cautious with pot roast! Thanks for watching, Andy.
RickTurns it’s always a pleasure watching your videos you turn beautifully and always make me chuckle
Open toe shoes in a shop setting??!! 😳
In the summer I usually work in sandals. For videos, I normally wear athletic shoes, but I forgot this time. Thanks for watching, Rob.
you should work for movies special effects :D
Thank you, Gabriel.
Don't give up your day job.
I can’t quit my day job...I’m retired. Thanks for watching, Steve.
Hi Rick
😁 The piece turned out nice. Enjoyed watching.
Rick please wear proper footwear! God forbid you get a flying log loose.
I did not even notice that until I was editing my video! Thanks for watching, Sheilah.
All that protective equipment but your wearing sandals 🤣🤦♂️
The feet often live a life of their own. I didn't even think about the sandals when I was working, since it was summer and I was wearing them all the time. When I reviewed the video later, I resolved to wear shoes after that. Thanks for watching, Jordon.
@@RickTurnsWoodturning dont get me wrong I'd be wearing sandals in my own shop too🤣 love the videos tho 👍
