  • This question has come up a few times in the last few weeks, so in this video I'll be testing how to get the most out of Polychromos mixed media with a base of PITT Pastel pencils.

    Love how this turned out. I love using pastel pencils on top of pan pastels but never tried colored pencils yet.

    Gemma you’re a really GREAT artist, you inspire me so much to get my art back on. Once lost along time ago. Keep up your amazing work.

    Thank you so much for this video! I’d been wondering about this for a long time - I primarily work in colored pencil, and I absolutely love it, but it can be very tedious. Love the addition of pastel pencils for the base layer in this! I think it definitely helped you achieve a vibrance and luminosity that pencils alone couldn’t offer - can’t wait to try for myself!

    Gemma I am glad you did this, I love using pastel underlayer and poly chromos but so far all I like it on is Canson XL Mixed Media sanded grain. I laid down both clear gesso and Art Spectrum Colour Primer in my coloring books hoping I could create a similar texture in the books so I can lay down light on dark and poly chromos on pastel but so far I have had no luck-if I could find a way to do this I would be so happy

    Soo amazing, may you please draw the inner part of a tree like you did here but with more details like a 3/4 top view of the inner part of the trunk with tree bark around it in pitt pastels please?

    I mix them and even the luminance and Lightfast brand. I did use glassine. I did a juvenile indigo bunting and it was from a photo from Nancy Lasare on Flickr under my name. I saturated it more. The bird actually becomes more beautiful as it gets older. I was careful of where I used fixative for both kinds. Since so many are kind on Flickr many request to paint and most are very generous including my brother. It all works and it is mounted against the glass with no issues. I also do the same with my watercolor paintings. Sometimes I do them with one medium and sometimes more making sure that my pastels have been carefully spritzed with fixative as well as the colored pencil.😊Fun

    This is really a great video! Question: if you're mostly using pastel, and just touching up a few details here snd there with regular colored pencils, would that still be considered a pastel piece for art shows, etc?

    • @GemmaChambersArt
      @GemmaChambersArt  Год назад +2

      I suppose it depends on the art show and their rules, but I would consider it a mixed media piece at that point

    Do you have to apply a spray sealer to protect the piece when you are finished?

    This is absolutely stunning! Makes me feel all autumn-y and cozy! Where abouts in the UK are you from? I live in Littlehampton on the South Coast (near Brighton).
    Have you got any fun plans for Halloween? Are you dressing up? Going trick or treating? I'm going with my sister and her kids and I am going to be Velma from Scooby Doo 😂
    I have been wanting to play around with pastels/charcoal for a while but I will be honest I *hate* the mess that I get from my pastel blocks so I tend to avoid using them. It just seems like I spend more time cleaning up than I do on the drawing. I would like to try some pastel pencils but they are sooo expensive! (I am disabled and unable to work so don't have much money to spend on art supplies) unless I get a tiny set with about 6 colours in. Are there any more budget-friendly brands/sets of pastel pencils that I could try so that if I end up not getting along with the medium I haven't wasted a lot of money?

      Ahh small world - I'm from Surrey but I was in Brighton just earlier this week 😁
      Pastel pencils are definitely easier on the clean-up than blocks or charcoal, but they do cost a lot more. I would say the PITT Pastel set of 12 would be one to look at. They're great quality and they mix together so easily you should be able to make just about any colour you need from the 12 in the set. If I come across another brand that's more budget friendly I'll be sure to let you know!

      @@GemmaChambersArt thought I recognised a southern accent 😂 Brighton's great, although I don't get in as much as I'd like, especially since the pandemic started.
      Thanks for the tip, I'll definitely look into those - perhaps Santa will be nice to me this year? 😂

      Littlewings85, Gioconda pastel pencils are a lot less expensive than the Pitt. They are a really good pastel pencil to start with.
