LONGER BIO
Saxophonist Bob Reynolds is an in-demand jazz performer, educator, and sideman, as well as a Grammy Award-winning member band Snarky Puppy. Born in Morristown, New Jersey in 1977, Reynolds grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, where he first started playing saxophone at age 13. Although he listened to a range of music as a kid, by his late teens he was a dedicated jazz student. After high school he honed his skills at Boston's Berklee College of Music, where he mentored with George Garzone, Hal Crook, and others. As a leader, he debuted with 2000's The Bob Reynolds Quartet, followed by 2006's Can't Wait for Perfect. That same year, he joined fellow Berklee alum John Mayer's band and spent the next five years with the pop star, touring and appearing on such albums as 2008's Where the Light Is and 2009's Battle Studies.
In 2013, he returned to his solo work with Somewhere in Between, which reached number one on digital jazz charts. He then made his Snarky Puppy debut appearing on the genre-bending group's 2014 effort, We Like It Here. Two years later he was back with Snarky Puppy for the Grammy Award-winning Culcha Vulcha. In 2017, Reynolds delivered the EP Guitar Band, which featured appearances from Kneebody bassist Kaveh Rastegar as well as fellow Snarky Puppy members Robert "Sput" Searight (drums) and Mark Lettieri (guitar). In 2018 he began touring with 4-time Grammy-winning guitar legend Larry Carlton. He also released the albums Hindsight and Quartet which both landed in the top 10 of Billboard's Jazz charts. A passionate educator, he cofounded an annual summer retreat for adult saxophonists called the Inside:Outside Retreat and he's coached thousands of musicians through his Virtual Studio, a ground-breaking web-based teaching platform he built and has operated since 2010.

HE IS ALIVE

Armin
Hi friends. I hope you are well. I'm out of shape and need to reset many things. No place to begin like the beginning. This practice never fails to help me connect to the instrument.
Hi Bob best wishes to you. Great to see you post something. Hope to see you play live one day.
You're being out of shape is like the best that I can aim to in my dreams. I really need to take the patience to work on long tones, so hard not being bored.
Noticed you never make a full exhaul before breathing in, so is that right? Vocal trainers always mention, that we don't need "old" air, so it should be replaced with new.
there are a lot of musicians (myself included) that feel that those resets are crucial for break-throughs towards essential aspects of what music is all about. So....nothing wrong with that! And thank you for putting out these videos, you're an inspiration for many of us!
Thanks for always being the beacon for all of us !! Much appreciated!!
See that, Bob? People happily watch you play one note for 10 Minutes, so get rid of the good ol' perfectionism induced resistance and keep it coming (if you find the time, that is :) Also words of wisdom from little Bob - preach!
Word up!!
Me: Finally Bob Reynolds is back!
Bob: *DoooooooOOOoooooooOoOot*
The king has returned!🙏
Glad to see my “morning coffee “ video back. Stay safe
Missed your videos Bob. You don’t realize how helpful you are to younger musicians like myself
What we wanted and needed. The king has returned.
Bob, you have no idea how much you have shaped my approach to learning, practicing and enjoying music since i found your channel some two years ago. You are a great inspiration to so many of us, and however your situation is right now i wish you all the best.
Great seeing you on my feed again.
Everyday, this is a the way to start. Thank you, Bob!
I totally do this...........long tones are your friend. I never thought I’d post a video of myself working on long tones......you did. I’ve watched you for years. I’ve listened, too. You are an awesome teacher. Don’t you ever disappear on us again...........
🎷 🤠👍
Always a great way to reconnect with your horn, especially when you don't really feel like practicing. Good to see you again! You're a rare breed, great player and a great teacher.
You see, the approach is what matters, nay, the intention! Music therapy indicates that we must try to go back to basics to find our center. The center of our Tone, Breathing, Sound, Timbre, Rythm, etc. In this video you somewhat show what your objective is, while using certain filters. The ability to be aware of your sorroundings, stopping your deep concentration and excercise to attend something else, patience, and calm PLUS the respect and empathy that you show to your kid at the end, that requires work, discipline and care for what you love. Any musician or person, for that matter, has to learn when to hear and listen, an learn everything you can from everything. Adults from kids and viceversa. Great video, played along with my trumpet, low and long tones help to relax the lips and chops. Thank you and have a great day!
Getting back on it myself... Dark times - Covid-19, bereavements, no gigs or playing for 12 months. No motivation. Seven days warning for a sit-in gig/jam was all I needed to get back on my horn. It felt so joyous to reconnect with myself and my buddies.
This is all I did for a week; long tones... fingers were more or less up to the job.
Long tones, thinking about Miles getting his tone back ("5 years..."). Every day will be better.
So reassuring to see that a great player does the same!
this is literally the most virtuoso sax playing i have ever seen
Right????
Long tones at every practice warm up. Never forget the basics. I once heard Sonny Rollins say he enjoyed playing just long tones and scales all day. If it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me...
This is why you are one of my favorite players very honest with yourself in the shed and focused on small things! Cheers Bob we missed the Vlogs!
I am in awe with the humility it shows to make and post this video. And I find it helpful to see you practice this!
Yes! More Bob Reynolds Vlog! We’ve missed you! Also, always nice to have the reminder to check in with the basics and reconnect with the instrument!
Im a trumpet player and enjoyed playing along to this. Thanks
Long tones good, trash bad. Keep it up Bob, your videos and music have helped me immensely through quarantine. Here’s to getting better together
Definitely one of them most therapeutic saxophone videos I’ve seen to date. Thanks Bob! Welcome back.
Thank you so much for putting this up. I just played along with the clarinet. Started on open G and continued with low G after a while.
You could probably explain in 10 seconds what to do, but it really helps my motivation to just follow along.
Looking forward to more practicing videos like this or maybe even longer sessions / live streams. No need to talk and explain even - if you don't want to.
Return of the king
Look, simple things make a huge diferences, this kind of lessons most of the time are no really understood, in fact I had been practicing just following mi "common sence", nobody explain before what to look. Thanks, maestro!
Could listen to a podcast with you and your son for hours ;)
The best saxophonist in the game bar none!!!!! Welcome back!!!!👍
Beautiful stuff, Bob. My students and I will be doing long tones in tandem with this - please keep producing stuff like this for great reference points.
This makes me feel better about my own out-of-shapeness these days. This is a different way of doing long tones for me. I like it!
Quavery is a word, by the way. I had to look it up.
I was *just* checking your channel yesterday for anything new. You must've seen me catching up on some older vlogs that I missed along the way. 😉
This is absolutely fascinating, Bob. Thank you for sharing this super important side of practice.
Glad you enjoyed it! I always think this kind of stuff will be insanely boring to people, but, it is my reality. :)
@@bobreynolds Oh no, it isn't boring at all! As a bassist, it helps me to think like other instruments and this is exactly the kind of thing I love adopting. I'm gonna try this with bowing!
Return of the king!
He's BACK!!!
Great to see your videos again!!!
Hello Bob, I‘ m a student in school. I often don’t know how to manage all the things together with practice. I want to practice 1-2 or even 3 hours a day. I think you made a vlog “how to manage all the things” or something. I really can Say that beside almost every vlog from you over the years, this one helped me soo much. I‘m so thankful that you’re sharing your knowledge for us for free. This has an immense impact on my practice over the years. I just wanna say thank you. In addition to all your solo albums and snarky puppy stuff with this vlog together your mind your approach and your knowledge you‘re one of the completist artists these days. Thank you 🙌✌️
He’s back!!
BOB IS BACK
Merci Bob ! C’est toujours un plaisir de regarder tes vidéos et merci du conseil pour la connections avec l’instrument 🙏
I was just listening to Crush from Quartet today, featuring a train rhythm,
These long tones are more of ship departure...
Happy to see you again!
Works for us singers too. And we can practice harmonies to your note too! 🙏🏻
Thank you Bob, very inspiring :)
Meditation to quieten the mind & reset/refresh the body to horn connection! Thanks for the transparency Bob #cutthetrash 🙏
Followed along on trumpet :D Bb instrument gang
Welcome back brother!!
Although I've been Pop-playing for awhile, I now have the discipline and urge to begin, once again, from the beginning - after listening to your advisement in words and practice.
Tonality, control and articulation, baby!
Thanks again, maestro!
(P.S. : How is your - our - dear friend Ben Wendel? Dude can play, eh!)
Lohvissimo!
Even though there are no cruise ship gigs, you can always get a job on a tug boat! (Seriously though, helpful video!)
Thanks Bob, great exercise to play along with and focus on breathing and tone. Also interesting to use ( or abuse maybe ) and play all different intervals along with your G on the Video. Trying to make it an as stable and perfect sounding interval as possible. And trying to "per-hear" the interval/ note I'm about to play against the G. The more dissonant ones were kind of hard to do for me.
🤗🎶great breathing exercise, keep going!
Ayyyyyyyeee
Nice video! Thanks!
The meditation book "30 Days to Reduce Anxiety" by Harper Daniels is great.
Do you ever do this with a drone?
HI BOB HOLY JEEZ I MISSED U
Where you beeeeeeeeen!!!!
Long time no see 👋🏼
💪💪🎷🧘♂️
What camera do you use?
ASMR Bob Reynolds (also who harmonized?)
Comment like number at 666. Didn’t want to change it. I do this with 4 beats before going down chromatically into bar 2 and three. So 12 beats three notes, then I take a full bar breath. Go down to the bottom of the horn from G an octave above Bob’s G. Then start again at G and go up into altissimo. I only have a 5th /6th range of altissimo (G - Eb). Then I do chromatic down and back G -F# G but increasing the width of the intervals. To bottom then top of the horn. Takes about 20 minutes. Then overtone Rascher type stuff. If I’m really into it might do crescendos diminuendos etc. Full on it’s about an hour. Sometimes I get around to playing music 😄.
Btw ‘When It’s Over’ from Hindsight is so beautiful. Just been listening in the car.👍
🎶👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Did you ever think about how much more it would calm you down if you didn‘t put on that metronome all the time? Just follow your heartbeat and your „real“ pulse...!
May I call you sensei?
Funny, many of you start to mentioning lately how long tones not important( get your sax together) They’re suggesting rather overtones exercises.
Pause the video just as it turns to 10:53. Tell me what you see and how it makes you feel. I can't quite find the words myself.
Diaphragmatic!

My cats hate this video.
