    While reading the book The Inner Game of Tennis, I was struck by a parallel between the author's recommendation for studying tennis pros, and how I've always approached transcribing jazz musicians.

      For my money the best player on the planet. Just my opinion. It’s not just speed or technique but sound and feel which for my money is what music is all about!👍

      Watched him from almost the beginning after seeing a RUclips ad about his lessons and website like somewhere around 8ish yrs ago. I feel like I've been watching a character develop from a TV series when you binge watch several season in a row. Kind of like your channel. I've watched yours for a while as well and you have been doing the same. You both do fantastic work in your own right to help and encourage fellow saxophonist to keep the fires of saxophoning roaring and stimulate the need and desire to be better at the instrument. Keep up the great work.

    It is great to hear you use the word "joyful" when talking about Cannonball. I have a playlist of Cannonball's music and I'll play it when I'm vibrating low. It will almost always make me feel better. It just makes me smile. I get so much out of being pointed to great recordings by pro players and hearing what they love about them, what I should be paying attention to. That type of lesson adds so much to my playing. Thanks Bob and feel free to get as "woo woo" as needed. I speak fluent "woo woo." lol

    I used to be a good tennis player, good enough to get paid for teaching. I ended up with knee and hip issues so now I play the tenor sax instead and I'm loving it signing up for any jazz stage. Next month I will be with Chad LB... Can't wait...

    At Berklee (waaaay back in the '80s) saxophonist Bill Evans came to speak. At one point he talked about practicing physically imitating his idols -- lots of movement and raised horn a la '80s Sonny Rollins, standing stock still and slightly hunched over a la Joe Henderson, etc etc.)

    As an amateur saxophonist, I always struggled with sight reading. Never really got good at it and to this date it feels like a deficiency - not really being able to explain (in terms of music theory) what you are doing, always makes me somewhat insecure. I always rely heavily on my hearing when learning or transcribing anything on the saxophone. The joy I get from listening to the way a song is delivered, and trying to nail the timing, the feel, etc of that specific delivery, makes up for all the insecure feelings. So thank you for this video, to me it underlines the real importance and value of thorough listening when transcribing a tune, even more than the thorough knowledge of music theory. And thank goodness I’m an amateur…😉

    Gerald albright is a 100% carbon copy of cannonball- that line/lick is straight Gerald. Check out his playing...Live at Birdland west, and Giving Myself to You are 2 albums that showcase this quite well. He's a "smooth" player, but his base is heavy blues and pseudo bebop. Gerald stated that Cannonball was his biggest inspiration.

    Great advice as always, Bob! I'm a multi-instrumentalist, and whenever I play I think of musicians who inspire me - not to imitate them, but to take bits & pieces of their styles and put my own spin on them to keep improving and developing. Justin Stanton has great phrasing on keyboards, Maz has incredible dexterity & breath control on trumpet, and Keita is....well, he's Keita! :)
    When I hear you play, I'm drawn to your amazing tone and fantastic melodic lines - and the solos are all scorchers too! It's all super impressive to me. Thanks for the vlogs, and have a great time in Europe with your band and the Pups.

    Spot on Bob! I just started my first Cannonball transcription on guitar, it is the Autumn Leaves solo, epic! I agree about his feel, it´s just so goooooood that it is hard to describe. To me the Autumn Leaves solo is the quintessential jazz solo, a solo that every jazz musician should learn. One should no worry about the notes to much i.e. what notes are being played, that will reveal it self later, the feel, the rhythm, articulations and even the breathing rhythms that Cannonball uses a lot in this solo are the main actors.

    • @StiffDogson
      @StiffDogson Год назад

      Another thing I forgot to mention is that he has such a logical note selection. For when I’m looking for the right notes in his patterns, they always end up being hyper logical notes and the fingerings also , on guitar. Compared to Lee Morgan for instance, that can be very illogical and even irrational at times :)

    Jimmy Hamilton (clarinet) has an infectious feel to me. I love playing 2-4 bars of his over and over. Same for Sonny Rollins, he has sooo much style, I can just be blown away constantly by just repeating his small phrases. Oh, I've also been enjoying Art Pepper lately.
