INSTALLING APPLE CarPlay in your BMW M3/M4 F80/F82/F83 with NBT (and other models)

- I found some hardware that works with my 2015 BMW M4 with the NBT head unit. Other options I had found required upgrading a lot of the OEM BMW parts, but this is just a stand-alone box that plugs in between your stock head unit and the stock screen!
Easy install and it works really well over bluetooth so there is no need to physically connect your phone, just hop in the car and you have CarPlay! I believe it also works with Android Auto, and it's AirPlay capable, so you can mirror your phone screen to it in order to display any app (not just the CarPlay apps).

Thanks for the clear, detailed, patient video. I am amazed at how you can use a screwdriver to gently open a clip at the same time you are also filming, while you pull the clip out...while you are INSIDE the dashboard. I just completed this install with this help - thanks. I actually managed to fit the unit directly under the head unit without any issues. No need to open the glove box. It seems your head unit (NBT) is taller than mine (NBT-EVO) was.
+Scott Meridew that’s great! You’re the second person that said that. Mine may have got there too, but I saw instructions to put it there.
Good video, like the part about the gold clips and the fiber optic cable. I have not found a video to explain the connection of OEM Microphone. I did Mic install and figured an easy 10-15min way to do it. Perhaps I will post a video for those who may need it.

One comment, on my 2016 F82 M4 ZCP, I was able to slide the CarPlay box under my head unit (NBT EVO ID4). I liked fitting the unit into that smaller but more rectangular space. I put felt strips around the CarPlay box and secured it with some double-sided tape. No sliding around at all.
I did end up taking off the glove box and mounting the wireless antenna into the space between the glove box and headunit.

+Jermaine Roach thanks! My only issue has been that sometimes my phone will not automatically connect, but I can just go into Bluetooth settings and tap on the autokit 3000 and it connects.

+Sid Nanda yes. Well, not the hud. That’s on the windscreen. But I think you meant the lcd display.

First off, thanks for the great vid! Been considering adding CarPlay support on my F30 for some time now. I am now thinking if I'm going to remove the headunit and do all this, might as well install a rear view camera as well. Do you know if adding camera support is as easy as purchasing a trunk handle camera and running the lines to the MMI box? Thanks

Just got this installed in my 2015 M4 with 360 cameras. Functions as normal and switches between cameras and MMI unit when reverse is selected and then back to drive. Can confirm no issues so far!

Hi Aaron, super useful video! I plan to install the same unit in my car (M4 2015 convertible) and I have a question: based on your experience is it practical to get the USB cable to pop out inside the glove compartment (or maybe under it?) instead of in front of the head unit?

Thanks for posting this video. Well done. I'm getting ready to install this MMI box in my 2015 M4. Where did you plug the Aux cable in for the audio. The video doesn't show that or I've missed it.

How are you liking car play without a touchscreen? Is it terribly clunky? Also, (unsure if normal CarPlay does this) does it work with your HUD to display directions with maps/Waze?
+Hunter Beck I love it! Mostly I wanted to use Waze and Music at the same time. Haven’t used waze for directions yet so IDK about the HUD yet, great question. I’ll try to report back one I’ve used it.

Hey I had a question when I use Apple car play and listening to music and I try to record on snap it said external devices and my music get low how do I get rid of my music going low when I try to record because I want my music loud so I can hear it on my snap video

Are these the same units as bimmer-tech? When looking at these they dont ask for Vin numbers like Bimmer-Tech. Would love to save the money if theyre the same.

yes, exactly the same internals. don't waste your money, i bought the andream from ali-baba for $279. Installed it in my M4 in 2 hrs and works like a charm.
My audio doesn’t work, do you know why? The microphone works when someone calls but no music or volume. Radio works on the original idrive after holding menu and going back to it.
Really don’t know why that would be. Possibly a loose connection or a faulty unit?

So every time you start your car do you have to hold down menu on the AUX? Or does it stay on Apple CarPlay? I’m super interested in this upgrade!
+Jordan Griffin no it automatically starts up on CarPlay. You just hold it in to toggle back-and-forth when you want to switch

Thanks for the video! With this video is was an easy job, also added a rear view camera and it works fine. But I have one problem, if I get an call while I'm listing to the radio, I hear nothing? Does it only works if the system is connect with aux front?

Hey. Installed , all ok except one thing. After I switch off the car it’s showing No Signal, orange color, on the screen until the car’s systems are completely off (after around 10 min.). It happened to you, too or to anyone?

+Snow Storm00 good question. I think it lets you upgrade firmware and play music if you have a USB stick with downloaded songs, but I’ve honestly never used it. If someone else knows chime in!
@@HelpMeDIY It's for Android Auto since there's no support for wireless AA unlike Carplay. Maybe for firmware upgrades too.
Just did this install and screen doesn’t power up at all any advice on how to get it working properly

Also my M4 doesn’t have an aux port. So I’m assuming that’s why I can’t find the settings

I just added this to my 2015 M4, has anyone noticed the volume is WAY lower then factory sound? has anyone found a fix?
+Eric Shepard interesting... I didn’t experience that. Hopefully someone can chime in.
@@HelpMeDIY I found it. In the device settings there is a separate volume and EQ settings. By default mine were turned way down. I made the adjustments and it sounds fine now. I lost the active speed volume adjustment but that’s not a big deal. Hope this helps someone else.

@@danlevine4052 oh crap, you’re right! My bad. I have never seen one before so I guess I assumed they started in 2015. I would assume that it would be identical to mine, which is a 2015. But you should contact the manufacturer to confirm if you want to be 100% sure
