Mr. Sutcliffe, you got thin and you're looking not all to healthy. I really hope everything's alright. Great video by the way. Best wishes from Germany.
I was there on that track day when they did the filming. I think the car must have been washed and valeted about three times that day. I have to say, I don’t like the way this video is filmed and edited. It is a combination of focusing on the presenter, slow passes of a camera vehicle, distant tracking shots and filming the computer display. How about filming out of the front window and seeing how quick it is compared to normal track day traffic. Oulton is a great circuit and the M5 a great car, but this video shows us very little.
"In association with BMW M." - yeah..even the legend Sutcliffe struggled to look entertained in there. Appreciate it's mighty fast, but there's more to trackdays than that.
I think that's just its' size. This thing is 5 meters long, well over 2,1 meters wide. There's nothing you can do to a car this big to make it fun. The only big cars I see people enjoying are Porsche Macaans, I've seen people floor X6Ms and GL AMGs but they never get ANY close to the limit on corners, except for crashes. And while I see Macaans being driven hard, these are 30 centimetres shorter than the M5, they are much less wide, too. So it makes perfect sense if you consider that these actually are smaller cars. The newer SUVs have great handling, and still you never see anyone use that handling. The Land Rover SVR got the SUV laprecord for the Nurburgring, yet in reality nobody drives these quickly, if you put it into sport mode the police will just tow your vehicle because it's to loud. Most of the owners aren't even clever enough to put it back into comfort mode once the police wants to do noise checks, meanwhile aftermarket exhausts with the same loud/quiet (or open/close) feature are forbidden, you will get towed if you put them on your car and the officers notice the exhaust. Regulations and laws have become a complete sh*tshow, there is no going back for any german brand on the horizon. Just overpriced, overweight garbage cars with a lot of safety features that nobody needs, a lot of electronic infotainment features which will make your cars' value drop to 10% once the warranty ends.
Great video. Funnily enough read an old AutoCar magazine (20 Jan 1999) a few days ago with a red M5 E39 on the front mid slide with a dab of oppo being applied by Mr Sutcliffe on the front cover
Someone who needs practical family car, car for traveling, comfy car for every day use and is at the same time a car enthusiast and wants to go on track from time to time AND wants only one car in his life. See ? Many reasons. Not everybody can afford lightweight supercar for 2 people. Some people cant have multiple cars or they dont have time to have multiple cars. This car can give you all.
I know this is paid for by BMW (I hope so at least), and I know this is not a serious track car. But if I actually owned one of these, I would absolutely take it on track maybe once or twice a year, just for the heck of it
My Brother Bought a 2020 one of these black with the grey interior... had just completed its first 900 miles and a transit driver wrote it off . My bro escaped unhurt thankfully but i admit to being very upset I didn't get a spin in it. He's ordered an X5M as a replacement. The M5 is a super car
@@nessuno5403 I agree with you, the M5 Comp might not be the best M car for the track; but for me, the “track fun” factor is not the only thing that matters to me in a car.
@@PatrickSeres when you explain it that way, it's logical and acceptable. I've gone the other way - dedicated vehicles for the 2 purposes. Happy driving 🙂
Lifelong BMW fan and previous owner of the last 'proper' M5 E34 6 speed, but.. So we don't actually get to really know how to drive an M5 on track then apart from keeping all the nannying systems on... whats going to be different about the other tracks, suspension in sport plus if they are smoother circuits ? plenty of shots of Steves watch and pensive look though ..
So what did we learn? I don't know about you! All I learnt was the settings you had set. If I understand correctly, the red button gives you two options of set up and you switch between the two depending where you are on the track? If so, why no shots of your line and where you are on the course or what setting you've selected for a particular part of track. You had fun, I just got bored!
You don't need to be a super hero to drive it because the computer does everything for you but you *do* need to be one to buy it and run it. If you're gonna take the (very interesting) opportunity to do a tour of different tracks around Britain, why not do it with a vehicle which is more accessible to more people?
You don't have to be a superhero to extract most of the m5... and that's a problem... it takes away the pureness of the driving, my grandma could sit in today's sports cars and drive fast. Cars are going in the direction where drivers would only be operators of the buttons, no skill required to drive fast. Sad if you ask me...
This allows the car to have different personalities depending on the mood of the driver. I have one and I love it! Could’ve bought a Tesla but Until I’m forced to I won’t 🤷🏼♂️
Silly comment. It’s to suit different driving requirements so you can be docile and comfortable or track ready. I loathe these clarkson like questions. “Why does it need a sport button? Why can’t it be sporty all the time?” Ugh
I sincerely hope Mr Sutcliffe is keeping well. Been a while since I've seen him on youtube. Really glad to see him!
Steve looking slim!
Sutcliffe is so thin now! I barely recognised him! Well done on the weight loss but don't go too far, you'll make the rest of us look bad.
Steve Sutcliffe got so slim!!
Noting like a bit of Sutcliffe on track 🏁Glad it has the proper tyres too!
I’m assuming we are talking about Steve and not Peter Sutcliffe here, he wasn’t known for his driving skills but he was good with a hammer

I'm not so sure if Steve really means what he says in the video...
It is a sponsored video so it's not the same as a review.
Sutcliffe you are a legend and the Daddy of all motoring journalism. Hope you are well..

The evo magazine way nowadays unfortunately.
It’s an honor to see Steve again as tester. You look like you lost 40 pounds. Hope everything is ok.

Someone that’s close to 2 ton themselves.....

Superb film, thank you EVO and good to see Steve back at the helm. Keep them coming!
The entire video I was waiting for a shot of the track from inside the car, instead of just the presenters head.
Would have been good to see an actual uninterrupted lap with a forward facing cam!?
Love that in Gr Yaris there is none of this settings BS

I've always been impressed with Sutcliffe since he tested the Honda RA108 F1 car around Silverstone, and was within a second of James Rossiter
I thought these guys did a great job on the videos. They have a real passion for the M5.
This is really the only car you’d ever need

Steve is such a brilliant driver... great to see this! Been to Bedford Autordrome where there was an M5C. Savagely fast in a straight line!
Great to see you Steve! Looking well mate.

The head unit screen looks tiny compared to the other M5 competition I've seen lately.. is it a UK thing?
I feel like I missed a serious diet plan here. Should put the M5 on one

So what's the laptime? Interested how it compares to other cars in the track day
It's just for promo
