Sevika's "OLD MAN" (Dialogue Breakdown) | 1min Analysis

    "Let's just say I didn't always see eye-to-eye with my old man..." This mysterious line Sevika says to Silco goes a long way in deepening her character. It's just vague enough to make us wonder what the full story is, while also prompting questions of motivation that have all sorts of interesting implications about not just Sevika herself, but her relationship to Silco, Jinx, even Vander. At the same time, it functions smoothly and efficiently to serve the plot purpose of convincing Silco not to go after Jinx, which would otherwise be a fairly uncharacteristic decision for Silco at this point in his arc. Fantastically delicate and effective storytelling from the Arcane writers as always!

    I'd say it's out of loyalty. Even though she doesn't like it, Sevika knows how important Jinx is to Silco, and that when he's concerned about her he isn't able to focus on other things. So although she'd prefer it if Jinx was gone altogether, it's still important maintain that relationship stable while she is still there

    Consider that she isn’t talking about her dad, she’s talking about how SHE related to her dad, whilst acknowledging she otherwise has very little in common with Jinx. It’s a genuinely empathetic moment from Sevika to Jinx. She’s been shouting Silco’s head off about how Jinx is a problem they need to deal with and now that Jinx literally kidnapped and tortured her, NOW she’s telling Silco how to handle her with care and consideration?
    This would make no sense. Unless her hostile viewpoint on Jinx has changed, the result of an empathetic realization.
    Subtext: ”I understand how she feels about you right now. She’s got a lot to think about and she needs to process it in her own time. I would want you to leave me alone, so leave her alone.”

      I think that Sevika just knows whats more important to Silco and his cause. She wants him to lay down the law with the cem barons, to not look weak just like Vander did when he prioritized his daughter over Zaun. If she has to seem vulnerable, to give a piece of herself to make that happen, she will. We see how she'd give up her arm for the cause, why wouldn't she give some emotion too?

      I doubt if there will be a season 2 of Arcane, it will track the same story. Even though they left it with a cliffhanger, Jinx and Vi's story is completed. They have to refrain to make a drastic political change between Zaun and Piltover, otherwise it will conflict the game's lore. Yet there are still a hoard of other interesting stories in Runeterra. • @Creaform003
    @Creaform003 2 года назад +111

    The reason I don't think this line is a manipulation is that the advice suits Sevika's character more than it suits Jynx.
    Sevika seems like she was the kid who needed to get away to blow off steam. Jynx is the polar opposite, when she can't physically see her family, in her mind they are already dead and she is vulnerable.
    If Sevika was going to manipulate she would have tailored the manipulation to suit Jynx, given than it is incongruous it makes sense that it is from her own past.

    Here she is, right after an emotional encounter where she thought she saw vi, finding a clarity in sevikas tough, almost disciplinary scolding? At this point she is molded by both vi and silco.
    To me in this small moment, sevika embodies both vi and silco.

Heck maybe who she was as a teenager was more impulsive and brash like Jinx, and she's since grow out of that, so she *really* knows what it's like. Nothing about Sevika's character is not straight forward. She may taunt or belittle but she fights face to face. Sevika's advice here lead to Silco taking priority of stabilizing the Undercity's chembarons. If he left and went look for Jinx here, Finn and the others probably would've united and planned to overthrow Silco sooner; plus he likely won't be able to find Jinx.

    Continuing with this idea, she may be jealous of silco and jinx's relationship due to her past struggles with her and her dad's relationship and therefore she sometimes tries to push them apart due to jealousy and maybe to gain a stronger relationship with her boss because she has daddy issues🤪

      Very late response, and I'm pretty sure Schnee has also made some shorts on this, but the reason is, in short, because it made her feel vulnerable and she was mad at it.
      The whole scene with the boxing machine is about her feelings of inferiority. It's her confronting her trauma and how it weakens her- it's actually what the whole of episode 5 is about, Jinx trying to bury the trauma that's blocking her from her goals. Her first scene in episode 5 is her having ptsd flashbacks and being unable to work with the hextech, then she goes to confront the boxing machine, which represents her sister's strength and Jinx winning there is a measure of her own self worth, fails, then she confides in silco and then there's the baptism scene. So when Jinx is walking into the arcade, she's confronting what she's tried so hard over the years to bury in this place that held some of her last memories of her family. She's walking in, incredibly vulnerable, tense, and overwhelmed. Then, she gets scared by the crow and her flight or fight takes over because it's intruding on her very personal moment. And by this point in her life she's associated strength with ruthlessness, getting startled by a small little bird makes her feel weak, she's confronting her inferiority complex, and so she kills the problem as she'd been taught. There's some symbolism stuff too, confronting change, bad omens, etc etc, but what it really comes down to is Jinx has buried her empathy and she's terrified of everything, so she's posturing in a petty and cruel way so she can feel safe.
      I hope this was coherent and answered your question lol, have a good day

    I honestly think she told Silco about her past because she misses her father, even if they don’t always see eye to eye and doesn’t want Silco or Jinx to feel like she does. No real proof than the way she said the statement

    Maybe Sevika hates Jinx because she looks at her and sees what she believes her own father looked at when he saw her. The tension she feels forces her to oscillate between rejection- which is her go-to-response to Jinx and compassionate understanding, which we see a glimpse of in this scene. At least that's my take.

    It's possible Sevika is the closest thing Silco has for help on parenting advice. All of his other goons are to young or are afraid of Jinx and see her as another goon and not part of Silco's family. Sevika also was once Jinx's age so she understands the 'teenage angst' and it's strain on father-daughter bonds.
    It could also be a wake up call for Silco. She's saying she never got along with her dad and Silco at first clues in. Sevika's saying that people with healthy family relationships don't end up in the shimmer trade business. She's telling him to respect Jinx's boundaries out of fear that Jinx might spiral and do something even more drastic.

    Question. (In relation to the video about everyone’s final arc specifically sevika final arc) if one of the endings for her is having another Chem barren come in and she leaves. What if papa sevika comes in and tries to take power after Silco dies. It would create an example of a father daughter relationship where the father does not have power over her when she leaves.Aubrey he does have power over her up to that moment. Silly little sleepy thoughts.

    When I heard Sevika talk about her father and then Singed talk about a daughter I thought right away at some point it would be revealed they are father and daughter. But obviously that's probably not true?

    Really intresting! Also, I had a small worldbuilding revalation about the bar fight you've mentioned in your last video, that I'd like to post here as a riddle. So, here's my quesion to you: why do the Atlas Gamblets come built-in shield, and why did it activate right when Vi was trying to cover herself? I'll let you figure out the rest 😀

    • @clair_di
      @clair_di 2 года назад +3

      i’d like to try this riddle but its probably far from your answer but here i go anyways XD. I think theres a built-in shield mode for the Atlas Gauntlets in case miners would encounter loose rocks/rubble therefore the shield would protect them from the debris. As for the latter question, I believe this ties in with the fact that Vander (in Vi’s hallucination/flashback when she got knocked out for a bit) told Vi that she has to work with her guard which also correlates to when Ekko told Vi, as well, that she still blocks with her face. My guess is that after these 2 encounters, Vi finally learns how to properly block which lead to the shield activating.

    • @tamasarpadnevery2030
      @tamasarpadnevery2030 2 года назад +3

      @@clair_di Aay, you've got it! The first part of your answer is absolutely on point (it does have this feature for defending the miner's body from falling debris), and as for the second half, my answer would be that it actived right then and there because Vi made that specific 'cover yourself' posture that the Hextech AI (if you can call it that) was looking for. However, what you've said never even crossed my mind, that this happened (from a narrative point of view) because Vi admitted to herself that she needs to work on her fighting skills a bit more, with this narrative 'protection' being her reward. While I have no idea how true this is, it is a really intresting thought, so thanks for sharing it with me, and completing my riddle! 😊

    Do you think part of the rift between Jinx and Sevika was because Jinx was a reminder of Vander? I know Sevika and Vander didn't agree on how to help the undercity but I got the sense Sevika respected Vander, understood his stance even if she didn't think it was effective. To know the child of the man she respected but helped kill was growing up right there in front of her....broken, warped potential, ripped away from all the values Vander might have raised her with. I wouldn't be surprised if she pushed Jinx away so hard in casual situations so Sevika didn't have to acknowledge her part in ruining the girl's life.

    "Old man" can also refer to a husband or boyfriend. If that is the case then she may also have been a battered woman at one point. The sad commentary is that many battered women go back to their abusers.
