      You can also combo Dwarven Fortitude with Durable to ensure maximum healing when you spend your hit die, granted your character has the Constitution for it.
      Sadly Rogues can't Dodge as a bonus action, but on a Fighter this can actually still be pretty good. If you're in a pinch you can spend your whole turn healing yourself, taking the Dodge action to heal 15hp, then use Second Wind as a bonus action. If you're REALLY desperate you can use Action Surge to heal even more.
      This also lets you easily heal all the way up after the end of combat if the party doesn't have time to take a short rest.

    With the Dwarven Fortitude feat, there's a combo you can do using it, the Durable feat, and the Periapt of Wound Closure. Basically, you play a Hill Dwarf Monk with as high of a Con score as possible (16 or 17 to start), and take for these two feats asap and get the Periapt. You can then dodge as a bonus action for one Ki point, and roll a hit die. Because of the Durable Feat, you're getting back at least 8 HP (Con mod should be +4 or higher), but you could get as much as 12. Then the Periapt of Wound Closure doubles that amount, meaning that you regain 16-24 HP as a bonus action. With average HP rolls, you should have about 83 HP at level 8, so that's a hefty chunk of HP. It's dumb, it's niche, but by god are you the chunkiest monk that ever was.

      I've played a build using monk and these two feats amd I will say, durable is an uneccisarry addition. The number of times it will come up isn't worth it for a feat.
      My personal favourite use of dwarven fortitude is to take my first two levels in druid, my next four in totem barbarian and my next four in shadow or drunken master monk. The final build is 2 druid, 11 barbarian and 7 monk. Instead of durable take skill expert for expertise in athletics. The build is very simple: I become bear, I rage, I hug then I dodge. That's true, but even one round of fear can make a huge difference. It's an AoE, has multiple uses, and replaces an attack instead of using an entire action, so it's still really good. If nothing else, this can be a great backup option when you're out of spell slots and channel divinity.

  • @GreyAcumen
    @GreyAcumen Год назад +43

    There's actually a far more broken class combo for Dwarven Fortitude, namely the Moon Druid, or even better, the Bearbarian (Totem Barbarian + Moon Druid combo)
    Class and Racial features stack with Wildshapes as long as the shape can physically support them, and a feat is technically a class feature. Wildshapes not only come with their own HP pool, they also come with their own pool of Hit Dice. Normally the only time those Hit dice would ever come into play is by staying in a form through a short rest, but with Dwarven Fortitude, you can do it as an action.
    So the Totem Barbarian halves all damage except psychic, the Moon Druid gives a form with its own pool of HP, take the dodge action to be more difficult to hit, spend you Wildshape's Hit dice (not your base form's hit dice) to regain HP, and if you're still feeling sore, Moon druids can burn spell slot as a bonus action to also heal, meaning that you can likely undo multiple rounds of damage in a single turn, without ever dipping into your base form's HP at all.

    • @Reapor234
      @Reapor234 Год назад +2

      The only issue with this is that by Dodging as an Action, you're not attacking. Unless you eat an Opportunity Attack, you're going to lose Rage at the end of your turn. This is of course assuming more levels in druid than barbarian or not high enough level for Endless Rage.
      Definitely see the merit in it though. Too bad (given the time of me replying) that WotC said "no." and are making the new Wild Shape not carry over any class or racial features anymore...

    • @GreyAcumen
      @GreyAcumen Год назад +3

      @@Reapor234 - you don't need to attack to maintain rage as long as you are GETTING hit. This tactic is only to be used when you're sure to be taking a ton of hits.

    • @GreyAcumen
      @GreyAcumen Год назад +1

      @@Hazel-xl8in - not the case for a Bearbarian. Their unarmored AC (dex+con) still gets to apply while in Wildshape. Normally this only benefits a few forms, BUT a druid can decide which equipment merges with their form and which equipment stays worn (if able) Magical Items will magically size to fit the wearer.
      This is particularly relevant if the Bearbarian is wearing an Amulet of Health. Now no matter what form they are in, their Con becomes 19, theoretically boosting both their HP AND unarmored AC. (Giant coral snake goes from AC 13 to AC 17)
      Of course this does mean that your Wildshape would clearly be wearing an amulet, so not great for covert ops.
      I also like to take the Mobile and Telepathic feat for this build, as Mobile allows charges and pounces to be more easily taken, and for just about any flying form to effectively have flyby.
      Telepathic means that even while in Wildshape, you can communicate with others, so you can more easily ride out the full duration of the wildshape without that inconvenience.

    The Dragon Fear feat also works really well with Metallic Dragonborn Conquest Paladins, because they get a second breath weapon that's independent of their primary breath weapon. One of the options for the second breath weapon is Repulsion Breath, which is effectively an AoE shove (all enemies in a 15 foot cone must make a Strength saving throw or be pushed 20 feet and knocked prone). Since each breath weapon replaces an attack, you can use the roar to frighten your enemies, Repulsion Breath to shove them, and then use your movement to move forward and keep the shoved enemies in your aura, all while still having your bonus action available for things like an extra Shield Master shove, Spiritual Weapon, pre-casting Wrathful Smite for the following round, or any other bonus action option your specific build grants you.

      @Hazel-xl8in Год назад +1

      i mean, if there’s magic shops and libraries with useful information in them in your setting then cool? but so far in my own games i’ve not had either of those be available to anyone whenever they want. libraries are personal collections and magic “shops” are exclusive clubs, the only thing that keen mind would do is let you do a downtime activity on the fly, which is admittedly pretty neat.
      your dm might also rule that because a spell scroll is not just paper with words on it but contains the spell itself, you might not actually get the full picture just by looking at it once. the words might shift around on the page as the spell strains against the paper it’s been bound in as though it were alive, which is why a scroll disintegrates when you cast the spell out of it.

If you have a 3 in Con, and roll the average 5.5 (make math easy and say 5) you heal a nice 16 hp for a dodge action, and you will be less likely to take damage cuz dodge. I homebrewed a rule during character creation that makes the weapon master feat actually useful (I also adjusted that feat but more on that later).
    I took every class’ weapon proficiency and threw it in the garbage. Every lineage now has one weapon proficiency (elves-shortbows, dwarves- hand axes or light hammers, and so on). Every class gets a choice of a number of weapons to be proficient in. Barbarians get to choose 2 weapons of any type, Clerics get to choose 1 weapon of any type and 1 simple weapon, Rogues get 2 simple weapons, Wizards get 1 simple weapon, and so on.
    I did this to allow my players to customize their characters even more than the RAW would allow.
    So now having a feat that gives proficiency in four weapons makes sense! (I also adjusted it to be only two weapons but that the critical threat range of all weapons you’re proficient in is now 19-20)

    First rogues can't dodge as a bonus action, that's only monks.
    Mainly though most of these aren't things you can do, they are things the rules don't say you can't do. This means basically all of them are your DM has to agree they work or else they don't.
    The clear example here is the weapon master example. Not only are you assuming an optional rule from the DMG in guns of any sort is being used and that your DM won't instantly say there are no guns in my game or no future guns in my game, but you are also assuming that because the rules don't say you have to have knowledge of the thing you make as a bard means you can make those things using not even just metagame knowledge but also assuming you would know how they work and as such it shouldn't be questioned. The rogue example is the same, you are assuming the proficiency is something you know and that keen mind lets you remember it, and the rules simply don't say that is the case. I don't even agree with the idea that these ideas make the feats op, it really has nothing to do with the feats and everything to do with how much you can bend your DMs arm.
    The conquest paladin works, as does the bloodwell vial, though they aren't super busted. Also paladins channel divinity is short rest recovery, they just only ever get one use per short rest.

    Keen mind can also be used to remember the content of spellbooks and spell scrolls, allowing wizards to rewrite their own spellbooks up to a month after they're destroyed, copy spellbooks they flip through in just a few seconds, and giving them infinite attempts to copy a spell scroll's information into their spellbook.
    They can never get lost in an area they've been in within the past month, and can even venture through the Underdark with perfect clarity of the direction they're traveling in without leaving a trail. For spells like Animate Dead, they can perfectly recall the exact second they renewed their control on each zombie, allowing them to always perfectly renew control on all their animated dead without having to cast the spell earlier and earlier each day to account for errors.
    They can thumb through any written document in mere seconds and accurately recall the information to their group, meaning they can sift through an entire library's worth of information in just an hour, then think over the information in future long rests without actually having the books with them. This is a huge boon for intrigue campaigns where the party needs to sneak into a noble's manor and find written information on a scheme without getting caught.
    People really underestimate how good eidetic memory actually is. One common use is that a monster, attempting to hide from the party, briefly reveals itself to the party for a split second, running from one source of cover to another. In just a split second, characters with Keen Mind can get a full visual description of the stealthing creature. On top of that, even if the character isn't good at reading lips, they can accurately recall the mouth movements they witness and recite them to a character who actually can.
    Keen Mind is absolutely amazing, but nobody realizes it because you need to be creative to imagine its uses. It's a feature I recommend every wizard take.

    • @MrReaperHand
      @MrReaperHand Год назад +1

      You mentioned thumbing through a book in mere seconds. I will correct you here on that as you are mostly correct. It DOESN'T change how you view things. If you thumb through in a second you didn't actually see everything. It was all a blur, thus you cannot recall it. This feat is only memory. Unless you actually see it or hear it you will not recall it.
      Think of it like this, in a crowd of 50 people all are talking at the same volume nonstop. You cannot distinguish every last word, you will not suddenly in memory of what you heard be able to distinguish each individual voice. You will accurately recall only exactly what you heard. Same thing with thumbing real fast through books. You would recall it exactly as you saw it. You didn't read the book, you would see just the blur as if you were doing it right now.
      This is probably the biggest confusion.
      However, for the most part you are correct. As long as you have seen or heard something you can recall it. It doesn't allow you anything beyond 1 month of perfect memory though. For instance you cannot prepare spells,from memory, you cannot retain the phantom skill (seriously the ability literally forces you to forget, I could remember talking to a ghost the next day just fine), you cannot get details that were not seen or heard (however details you would have seen but not described initially count).
      It is an amazing feat, but most people do not understand it.

    • @MyLittlePonyTheater
      @MyLittlePonyTheater Год назад +1

      @@MrReaperHand Speed readers can read more than 25,000 words per minute, and the average schmuck can manage 2 pages per minute going fast. A lot of the books you're memorizing in fantasy settings are handwritten, meaning huge fonts - most pages might only have 100-200 words on them, at most.
      I'd say a simple History check (or a raw Intelligence check) would suffice to determine the wizard's reading speed, and I'd say a wizard with Keen Mind would also likely be able to read reasonably fast. Given my own capacity to read personal journals, the wizard could finish a 300-page handwritten book at a speed of about 1 minute for every 6 pages, spending about 10 seconds per page - 50 minutes for the 300-page book is perfectly reasonable, and real people can read MUCH faster than that. Records have put people up to 25,000 WPM reading speed. Look up Howard Berg if you've got some time.
      It's not a blur, and visual memory is much more accurate than auditory memory. Firstly, there are people who excel at picking specific voices out in a crowd, so the crowd metaphor isn't exactly accurate. Second, as long as the wizard places his eyes on each individual word, the point of photographic memory is that the wizard does remember exactly what he sees, and can slow down or stop any images he's seen in his mind for review.
      The human eye can easily scan over 200 words in 10 seconds, and you can even test your personal reading speed with certain websites and apps. You're truly underestimating the abilities humans possess, and certainly underestimating the abilities D&D superhumans with photographic memories possess in fantasy.

      For some reason I am imagening some really stupid character with this feat, knowing where North is, but having no idea about cardinal directions, so when asked where south is, they would just point in a random not-north direction.

    My favorite use of Keen Mind is with my Illusionist. Absolutely accurate impersonations of people you see, which is needed most of the time because most DMs hate Illusionists.

    Weapon master is actually the crux of a fairly niche build involving whips on monks (their best weapon hands down) while keeping up pure monk progression while keeping your subclass/race free

    The 5 feet to get up part of Athlete has come in clutch in a lot of my games where the barbarian is the only one still able to fight, got knocked prone, and needs to rush at the enemy quickly to get some good hits in.

    The Sorcerer Bloodwell Vial thing with Dwarven Fortitude combo is also a combo I've seen using the Strixhaven "Wither and Bloom" spell instead of Dwarven Fortitude to roll that hit dice

    Keen mind is low key really strong, the fact that is says ANYTHING you have seen is really insane, we had ppl glancing at a book or wall of glyphs or anything and being able to recall it perfectly.

    Keen Mind with a Changeling makes practically perfect impersonations. Like, so perfect you basically have to house rule how good they are.
    Purely thematic, but Centaur + Athlete = Goat Centaur, which is just awesome.

    Similar to the eagle barbarian build, an echo knights echo can use unleash incarnation to attack once during your attack action (grapple). It also specifically says you can mentally command the echo to move up to 30 feet in any direction (not that it has 30 foot walking speed), meaning “up” is a valid direction. Attack action, echo uses unleash incarnation to grapple, will the echo to go 30 feet up(free action), drop(free action), bonus action swap places with the echo. Your enemy has 3d6 fall damage and 3d6 you falling on them damage, plus whatever damage you did slapping them with your attack action. I know it doesn’t optimize the strategy as much as the eagle barbarian, but it’s another way to do it with easier prerequisites (level 3 echo knight fighter).

    I've always interpretted the Phantom Rogue ability as them posessing you and you just knowing the skill, not so much that they can teach it to you.

    FYI the Bloodwell Vial trick also works with the spell Wither and Bloom. It does AoE Selective necrotic damage and then heals 1 creature of your choice, i.e yourself 1 Hit die. So you can quicken the spell and instantly regain the points
