- "I'm devastated," said the neighbor who called police to report Atatiana Jefferson's door was open before she was shot and killed by former Officer Aaron Dean.
He's taking more responsibility than the cops are
pSmall360 - well said. You can hear genuine pain in his voice. As much as everyone says it’s not his fault (and it’s not) he still is feeling guilt over the way the police overreacted. Another citizen that will never trust law enforcement again.
@@dericksmith2137 Thank you.
Exactly
I feel he definitely is . That man is in so much pain. I really feel so bad for him. The cops don’t want to take any responsibility for what was truly their fault.😡😢
@@dericksmith2137 No shade but there is pass history and recent history that tells you cops are not to be trusted. I'm still trying to wrap my head around this guy calling the cops. He lives in Texas too! Something is not right. I'm not blaming him for what Aaron Dean, the white supremacist cop did but open your eyes to what is happening around you.
He feels more guilt than the cop who shot her
Yeah, because he should've went and knocked on her door.
Monica Key Yeah because it was his fault that it happened. I never send a cop to anyone’s house because we all know most cops are mentally ill and they can’t function properly.
Yeah because it’s his fault.
He should sue the police for pain and suffering
Actually he could!!!
He can sue Dean for unlawful action but I don't think the department would be accountable unless policy states to enter private property unannounced and shoot homeowner. Once an officer has broken policy he is acting unlawfully and liability lies directly upon him.
@smile cute Right 🤔
Why should he get anything out of it the situation might wasn’t his fault but he shouldn’t gain anything from it the lady already lost her life he better pay it forward tf

@@diannebaker8263 I keep hearing like this happens alot there. How many incidents actually happened this year?
We USE to do that.
The worst part is he didn’t even CALL THE POLICE !!!!! He called a non emergency number.
I don't blame him, I heard he called it in as a wellness check but the dispatch called it in a a possible robbery, so we needed to hear the audio tape of the dispatch to really say what is the truth! So released the audio of dispatch to the cop please!
That's the real truth. Why was this police in this mindset. What did he interpret!!!
@nmwbYwbd Exactly.
@nmwbYwbd police don't have to be mind readers but have common fuc'in sense, you don't shoot someone 2-3 secs after you give an order and then 🔫 threw a window! Coward!
@nmwbYwbd if there really was an medical emergency going on over at that house you guys would be praising him for calling in a wellness check but because a race soldier showed up and killed this woman it's the neighbors fault not the cop that didn't follow protocol!
@Lisa Roberson you are correct i heard the neighbor too but I'm talking about the audio of the dispatch to the police, was did the dispatch tell the police, a possible robbery taking place? We need to hear that audio!
I pray he is able to sleep at night. It's not your fault.
Oh no make no mistake he absolutely shares in the responsibility. He's not solely responsible but he's unwittingly responsible. Like it or not he called the police. Had he not called them they wouldn't have come she wouldn't have been shot dead by them. It's a sad situation but he definitely shares responsibility. I just hope he has learned that you don't send a militia to check on someone's wellbeing.
I pray he never has a moment of peace for the rest of his life.
He knows the rules that's why he's beating himself up! The golden rule I learned as a Child!
#1 What ever you do don't call the police unless there's a body on the ground.
Question: Why I asked?
Answer: They will just make it worse!
It has its +/- but I can honestly say I never had run in's with the police because someone called them in my neighborhood.
It is his fault. He called and they came. They wouldve never came if he never called and given how the police dont often respond to calls involving black people properly he shouldve been very hesitant or just not have called them.
It's not his fault her mother lived there as well. He didn't know that she was home. He didn't know that her mother was in the hospital. He wanted to make sure that something wasn't hurt or dead.

He called a organization known for countless kidnapping, rapes, murders and lying of and on our people. Has he not been paying attention for the past 60+ Years. He called racists domestic terrorists to check up on another black person, is safer to call a gangbanger
will holsey - sadly lots of people do not believe how corrupt law enforcement has become. Until they or a family member has to deal with the police most won’t believe. My own wife thought I was just ‘anti-cop’ with my attitude. Until our son was arrested.
It's not his fault, he thought he was calling to make sure his Neighbor was safe he didn't know he was calling a monster. Leave this man alone what if this neighbor would have been in trouble and he didn't do anything this would have been a different story

It's just a lesson to be learned. The lesson is we need to check on our own Neighbors. We need to have phone numbers for each other. I came up in a time where my father would have gone over to check on the neighbor. This is not a Time to call the police for anything
Factzzzzz he prolly one them miserable noisy neighbor ready to pick the phone up
No. The problem is we need police and authoritative reform. You shouldn't have to be super close to your neighbors, but it doesn't hurt (not knocking what you said). He called for a wellness check, not Super Turbo Swat starring The Rock and Vin Diesel with bazookas... A wellness check. I bet he got to the driveway and said " something seems off"... People have been killed and sued because a people came on their property late at night. I feel you... But THE AUTHORITIES are responsible. No one else. Everyone else did the RIGHT thing.

The pain will never go away. He’s innocent, old and not in the “know” of what’s going on with police nationwide wit police thinking that it’s open season on Black folks.
@Terri Quinn I hate to keep defending this man. Here’s the thing he’s probably in his late 60’s or early 70’s. I have 2 coworkers in their late 60’s. Ones black and ones white. Neither has a social media presence and both are clueless to the facts of racism and the current far reaching ramafications of it. To my shame I was just as ignorant in 2014 when I didn’t watch TV and had no social media presence. Without the resent surge in social media channels that highlight these tragic senseless murders and all those -hundreds- THOUSANDS of recent race based harassment events “while black” we wouldn’t know how bad things are since few of these incidents are even covered by mainstream news and when they are they do not cover us in a sympathetic light. Somehow we are given the blame. That’s why they showed the picture of the gun and that’s why they are blasting that illegal interview of the child that occurred without the presence of a legal guardian in an attempt to exonerate the cop. What many people do not realize is that these old folks are being feed “propaganda” and not the truth & they do not know any better. They don’t know what they do not know so he merciful on great grandpa!

Why didn’t he feel as though he could go over there? Why call the police, he’s literally feet away. I find this to be so sad and I feel bad for the guilt that he now carries.
@ Moon Unit...Well you obviously you didn't hear what he said on the interview!

How can anyone call the police in 2019 after Jean and Jefferson? #911 is a joke!
He knew not to call police if you black, they are not here to help you, if you black period, come on brother what is wrong with you ?
This is why I rather defend myself than call the police.
Not even trying to be funny or mean but I still don't understand why he didn't at least say hey or something when he walked over there to check things out? He didn't have to walk in the door was open they would have heard him if he spoke. This is just a messed up situation all the way around.
He did say that he got to the driveway; but because he did not know whether or not anything was wrong in the house, and he had nothing to defend himself if there was something wrong, he called the police. He did the responsible thing, in my opinion.
No matter how many times people say he’s not at fault he knows he was the catalyst right or wrong...tough situation
If somebody is robbing the place a burgular won' t turn on all of the lights. It would be dark. That's why she might had all the lights on because her door was open. This is sad. I could only imagine she might was looking at the case prior about that man a year ago killed in his own apt. Then she end up getting murdered.
This made me cry😞smh.
Never, ever, ever call the domestic terrorists (aka cops). It'll only end up with ANOTHER dead citizen. My heart goes out to this poor guy, and the family of Atatiana.
This is why I mind my own business.
The problem is he was under the mistaken belief that the police were there to serve and protect, but police all over the country have proven that is no longer true. They need to remove that motto from their vehicles.
Maybe get all your neighbors phone numbers and stop calling the cops on people? Idk just a thought.
Yea it seem like that's what we have to do.
Never call or speak to the cops. Ever.
Never never ... never call the police on your neighbor. Never get them involved. If you do expect someone will get shot. .. why.. because the moment you do, you just introduce a loaded gun into the equation...THAT WHY. !!!!
Next time he’ll know not to call the murderers in blue and check it out himself.
Call police officer: 1. you see a gang around in your house. 2. you see drug users or drug dealers around in your neighbor. 3. you see a thief stolen or open your car. 4. you see someone attack or fighting next to your house. period. In this shooting case, the neighbor who called the police is the Cause and not police.
As a black man, he should have known better. He's lucky he didn't get killed...
He should be..he shouldve checked on his neighbor
If you care that much As a neighbor, check on them yourself. DO NOT CALL THE POLICE.
Lesson: Mind your business, unless you see a imminent threat
This is what this type of terrorism produces. Not only is a woman dead, her nephew had to listen to her die, see her dead body, likely was held at gunpoint at some point during this...this man now feels like he killed this woman and will carry that for life.
Neighbors will be traumatized, will always see that house and think about how it could have been there. Her family is devastated, community is devastated.
There will be a cloud of this darkness surrounding that community for years to come. All because an officer watched one too many episodes of NCIS and decided to shoot first and ask questions later.
It’s not your fault neighbor that the ex-police person murdered your neighbor. It’s his fault, his crime.
The energy that he has for multiple interviews should've been used to knock on the door. It's not his fault , but he's international now all of a sudden. I'm too upset for interviews all the time after this. Not him.
Gotta think twice before calling them
Never Never Never call police to check on neighbors
He didn’t do anything wrong. He was just looking out for a neighbor and these officers didn’t do what they were suppose to have done. Now this man will subconsciously blame himself.
Gives Swatting another perspective
If they were close neighbors and he was so worried, why wouldn't he walk over and check...negligent, period.
Should have known better, you should have gone there and asked whether everything was OK
.
I believe America has learned the best way to put a hit on someone is call 911 for a welfare check.
This tragedy has made me teach my kids NEVER to call 911.
DONT CALL THE POLICE !!!
Never call the cops on your loved ones, they will finish them especially when black
You call Satan's children to check on your neighbor.
It's not your fault man! You did the right thing and they did not! Harboring a drug dealer as your neighbor is not your fault for what happened
Now I am afraid to call the cops for anything
If criminals did break into her house why would they even leave the door open for witnesses to see?
My ex-wife came to my house one day and started yelling and cussing at me. My child and even a neighbor witnessed it. I told her to leave, she wouldn't, so I called the cops. They said it was a domestic disturbance and by law, someone had to get arrested. They arrested me!!! I bonded out in a couple of hours. In court, the judge was appalled and dismissed it. He was not happy with the dumb cops. I learned then to never call the cops. They're guaranteed to make any problem worse.
Please don't hurt anymore. You did what you thought was best.
Doing what’s best is knock on your neighbours door. Call her name, to see if she’s ok.
Praying for you Sir
Call your neighbor if you see their door open. If you do not have their number and can't look it up online, call another neighbor. In our community, we have to think deeper. As another poster said, if you have a problem and call the police, you now have TWO problems. We have to think clearer and do more. I put no blame on this man, I put it on the the operator that took the call and put in the wrong non-emergency code, on the police officer who did not identify himself, and then shot her.
I'd like to believe that James was not familiar with the shootings of innocent people such as John Crawford, Tamir Rice, and countless others who were shot by cops after the cops were called on them.
I actually have respect for this man for coming out and showing his compassion regardless that this wasn't his fault. This is so drastically different from many other cases of people calling the police on 'shady' people of color who were simple civilians that ended up being shot to death and we never know what happened with them and their prejudices that led to the tragic events to begin with. I wish this man the best.
He could have showed his compassion by minding his own business. Tatiana would still be alive.
James Smith you are exactly who I would choose to be my neighbor Sir. I wish we had more concerned and caring men and women in the world just like you. I cried with you watching this just now. I can't imagine what you thought and felt when what we were taught to do didn't happen.

I surely hope that he has filed a lawsuit against the police department for pain and suffering. And I pray he is doing better.
I hope he forgives himself. He's not at fault.
He wanted to harass her but didn't think it would go that far. You don't call the police in the middle of the night just because a neighbor forgot to close her door. I'm not even sure the door was open at all, he probably made it up.
The first reports stated he called a NON EMERGENCY NUMBER !!! That he never called 911 or police. In fact they say he called a 311 number. Why are they trying to switch the story up now?!?
