Thank you for this, Jeff. I spent many years in my 20s and 30s in agonizing pain, hopped up on pain killers, and spending a fortune on chiropractors, because of two herniated disks between my shoulder blades. NO ONE told me to build up my back muscles and neck muscles. They only treated the symptoms, over and over and over. Once I learned how to strengthen my back muscles the herniated disks vanished, and now in my 50s I am stronger and healthier and PAIN FREE, than I was at half my age.
My friend I've been in a wheelchair for five long years. Since I have been watching and listening to your videos my upper body is in the best shape since I was thirty and I am seventy years old. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

This is encouraging. I have a slight slipped disc apparently (don't we all) and a couple years ago the Barbell row made my back snap really bad so now I'm hesitant about that exercise. Do you have any tips on how strong to get in these earlier moves in the video until it's time to move on to the more advanced stuff? I'd love to really get my back in shape but I don't want to hurt it again.
Reading these comments and stories gives me so much hope. I’ve been in terrible pain for over a year now. Shooting and stabbing pain on my entire left side all the way down to my foot. The mornings are brutal and I’ve seen chiropractors and physical therapists here and there. X-rays revealed nothing. Just got an MRI finally after PT was not yielding results. Not only is my body suffering, but a few years ago I suffered a horrendous mental breakdown, which had many residual affects, and I severely struggle with physical touch. This pain has forced me to confront way more than I’d anticipated, but I’m so ready to have my life back. I used to cycle and mountain bike, but the seat causes too much discomfort to tolerate. I walk everyday and am still active. I miss the old me....but am trying desperately to get to the other side. Thank you all for your rehab stories. I want so badly to be well again.
I’m a 39 year old MD who had exercised with wrong form for over twenty years with worsening low back pain. I have seen chiropractor/yoga/posture and sleep aids with no significant difference. I performed the reverse leg raise and found the pain gone within a week. The rest of my body became stronger in just one month I am now able to do L-sit and 4 cycles of 10 straight leg-raised pull ups. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise and your web channel. I am grateful
As a decently tall guy (190 CM) working an office job, I used to get these kinds pains all the time. Since I started working out following Jeff's advice, these pains stopped happening. The last time this kind of pain happened to me is more than 2 years ago. Thank you Jeff!
I don't even have back pain, but I still watch these vids just to have the knowledge. You never know when you'll need it. Awesome vids Jeff. Keep em coming
I was literally binge watching all of the lower back pain videos from Jeff yesterday. Hanging from the bar is a life saver 🙌 reduced the pain at least a 60%
You have no idea how grateful I am that you shared this, I've been suffering from lower back pain for over a year and a half, tried lots of exercises, therapy, spent a lot of time and money and never fully recovered, but now I'm trying some of your exercises and the improvement is real and immediate, thank you so much!!!!
I injured my back at work rescuing a 308 Ib man. I hearniated my L5-S1 disc so bad I was having sciatica in my left leg and urinary incontinence issues. 1 year and 6 months later I was back at work after many excercise similar to the ones you show excluding the deadlifts. Fast forward 3 years after many rescues and zero issues I had to rescue a 490 lb man. Now I'm back to square 1. But now I have sciatica in both legs and feet. The problem is when rescuing large immobile people is that you cannot keep a symmetrical stance when pulling up from the ground with uneven loads, through small gaps and around corners. There is only so much the spine can take even when in good shape. When In perfect alignment the discs can handle phenomenal forces. Put them at any angle outside of nuetral and it's a gamble.
2:11 - Bar Hang (toes touching the ground) 3:23 - Seated Row (cables or weight band) 4:48 - Reverse Hyperextension (lay chest on bench, keep legs straight, lift feet up). Note that Jeff did a separate video on this exercise (by itself) for fixing low back pain, so this may be the best one to do! 5:47 - Hyper Row - (lay on your chest on a bench with feet under a piano or countertop or something, raise your back, then at the top of the extension, do a row with dumbbells, one arm at a time) 6:44 - Pullthrough (cable or weight band) After building foundation of strength with the previous exercises, add in dead lift and barbell row: 7:38 - Deadlift 8:57 - Barbell Row
Thank you! I underwent surgery 3 months ago and am in physical therapy and now I will start adding this routine! Back surgery is not as glamorous as it sounds and I don't want to ever do it again! Thank you Thank You Thank you.
Wanted to say thank you Jeff. I’ve been incorporating the reverse hypers using a large physio ball for months now and my low back has never felt better. Your vids have been a Godsend to me and I’m eternally grateful. God bless you and your family!
Wow Jeff wow! You helped fixe my debilitating back issues a couple years ago with videos like this one - thank you so much for this type of content really changed my life. I’m turning 40 in a few weeks and am in best shape of my life, lost 50 pounds now around 10%BF and stronger than I was when I was 20 years old. Your videos are the foundation of my lifestyle and workouts. Thank you (and Jesse lol):)
One of the best video out here. Suffering from two low back herniated disc and a T 12 herniated disc for 15 years. Which caused frozen hip as well a si joint imbalance. From experience of pain I can see the path to recovery from this video excellent progression of thought from a true expert. Well start new routine today not tomorrow but today thank you for you work and Dedication.
I just spent 2 months in pain, until I started doing your reverse hyper (mentioned in a previous video) and kettle bell swings, also featured in one of your workouts. THANKS. Freedom from back pain brought to you by Jeff Cavalier!
The video Jeff talked about 100% fixed my back pain. I was able to relieve my sciatic nerve pain with the exercise and was back in the gym the next day! What used to be a 3 week ordeal was fixed in hours. Thanks!!!
How can i thank you jeff you just changed my life bcz back pain was a major problem in my life but not its not anymore i am getting stronger rather than resting
Hey sir i have started workout during thid lockdwon from april onwards And i have lost significantly 7 8 kgs Thnkuhh for urr videos I have watched every video on ur channel 🥰
Jeff, thank you for all that you do. Years ago i had a bad shoulder impingement, watching your videos really walked me through this problem...FACE PULLS! Now i have a bad back with a sciatica nerve thats getting pinched. I worked through that watching these videos, its nice to see you put all the old videos into one. again, thank you.
good video. I had low back pain in 2004 and it was due to weakness. When I started to strengthen the back, it went away and never came back. Thanks Jeff
I can vouch for this. I did extensions and deadlift while having back pain. At first with light weights and then slowly increasing. My back pain started to reduce slowly, and I was able to maintain good posture for longer periods of time. Now, due to lock down, i cant go to the gym, and I can feel my back and glutes are getting weaker. Holding a correct sitting posture is becoming more difficult now, and slowly my back pain is making a comeback. But I know how to fix it, thanks to Jeff.
Jeff, how long are we "supposed" to be sore/tight after a workout, and what does that soreness actually mean? For example, if I train chest & triceps on Monday, and by Thursday or Friday those muscles are still sore/tight, does that just mean I had a *really* good workout on Monday? Or does it mean I'm not recovering properly afterwards?
Soreness is not really an indicator of a "good" workout or for that matter a bad one in the absence of soreness. The primary driver of soreness from your workout is from eccentric stress. You could theoretically do one set with a spotter helping you to perform slow eccentrics after reaching concentric failure and be so sore you couldn't touch that muscle for a week. Volume would be almost zero but soreness off the charts.
Thank you so much!! Both my grandma and uncle suffer from severe back pain..I’m going to send this to them and hope it makes them feel better, this really is amazing what you do for your viewers and everyone else out there
Can you please do one on the upper back. Ie, traps and neck. I've had upper trap problems for 2 years. Tight neck, tight knotted traps which has given me headaches for ages. At the moment I'm doing rotator cuff exercises with hope that it takes load off of my upper traps and lets them relax. Thanks.
Completely agree. No idea where this issue stems from, but I've been fighting it lately and it's a daily struggle to try and teach my traps to relax and not be in control of every single upper back movement I do while I'm at work. Stretching helps, but I can't figure out what muscles my traps are compensating for.
@@tighconley6889 Yeah, it's crazy. I literally have no idea on what to do next. No way am I doing a specific rehab for 2 months, just to find that it wasn't the right one. (Rehab being, stretching, random holds, strengthening etc) There's like a 1000 different rehabs aswell. I tried helping to cut the grass recently, my traps were on fire! I mean, that's like a super basic task aswell. At the moment I'm thinking that the surrounding muscles aren't activated or are weak. So then the upper traps have to do everything. I'm doing lower trap focused shrugs and rotator cuff work mainly with hopes that it takes load off of my upper traps.
@@gunsnderrickroses2777 Thanks for you comment. Chin tucks actually made it worse. I had an x-ray about a year ago, it said that I have a loss of cervical lordosis. When I did the chin tucks, it gave a shooting nerve pain on my left side down to my elbow. I could try that farmers walk variation, thanks!
I am definitely going to give this a shot. I am out from work due to low back pain. I have been through 2 chiropractors, a neurosurgeon, 2 spinal injections and 2 8-10 week sessions of physical therapy. None of which prescribed these movements and none of which alleviated my pain. Wish I had seen this a year ago!
As a physician I can confirm that as well. Doing cardio 3x/week also helps. Studies have shown that 30-45 minutes with a heart rate of roughly 180-your age has the same effect as taking pain killers.
I had microdischectomy surgery in 2017 on my L4-L5. Worst pain in my life.. couldn't even stand up straight at all for 4 months. I undoubtedly believe it was due to my psoas muscle not being activated or stretched enough. I always had back pain since I was 17 and all it took was a very minor but awkward ski fall for it to progressively get worse and worse until I couldn't walk straight and "herniated" my disk. I bought a pso-rite and will follow this video (and others) to hopefully regain my back strength so I dont have problems down the road.. Thanks again for the upload!
What is the time frame for doing this sequence? Do we do exercise 1 for a week, then move to 2, do it for a week, etc? Also, I’ve been watching the Fix Low Back Pain video that you did 2 years ago, and I’m curious about the leaning wall exercise. Do we only do that to the one side we compensate toward, or both sides?
The time frame depends on your progress speed and that depends on so many factors is just unpredictable. Just take your time and check your body. It should be challenging, but not painful if you are not in an acute pain episode. One week is probably too short for most of the steps in my opinion though. Maybe not for the first one. But that is just a guess.
This video was extremely helpful. It’s sums up my lower back injury. Weak glutes resulting in no support. This all forces the muscle around the lumbar spine to take responsibility for loads that they cannot deal with
Thank you so much for making this video. I have waited a long time for this, your last has helped me a lot getting relief of my back pain. Keep making such video, people need it more than your expectations. God bless you.
As a chiropractor I can say these exercises will serve as a great differential diagnosis tool. If they make your back pain worse or do not help at all, you have a joint problem and need to visit a good chiropractor who makes specific spinal adjustments.
It has nothing to do with calorie balance and how he plans his diet. If he in fact needs TRT to look the way he does means that he wouldn’t look the same without it. Alright. Staying lean though is diet manipulation and experience to be good at it without fucking up in any way. I’m ripped all year for a few years now and it is easier the more I do it. I don’t crash down anymore because I do it smooth. I know the important stuff enough so I don’t need much overthinking or effort. I don’t do complicated diets anymore. Everything is so normal and part of your life if you do it all the time for years. It is a lot. But it sure is natural to be ripped.
I recall him even saying that on some interview. It makes sense, it is his job to show us so yeah hes earning money by staying lean. Kind of a job description at this point. And he gets rid of trolls calling him out on his workout techniques altho him being lean probably has more to do with diet than training.
Crazy, it's like yo'ure listening to me. Played A LOT of golf this week, skimped on my lifting this week, only a few sessions and boom, back pain. This is exactly what I needed to start the week. Back to the gym STAT. Jeff, you 'da man.
I wish they came out 8 months ago when I messed up my back but I’m glad this video is up as I’m almost back to being 80% . More importantly for the people that recently injured their back and thinks that’s they’ll never be back to doing deadlifts
Dear Jeff, Thank you for the video. I have had great results with this work out. Would you ever consider doing a video for nurses or health care workers? A lot of videos address people who sit for a living. Nurses work 13 hour shifts on their feet, cement floors, multiple days in a row. I am 125# and lift and pull people twice my weight. Nurses have more back pain and back injuries than any other profession, as much as 3 times more than construction workers.
Too be honest Jeff Cavalier was my main inspiration to get into shape. I've put on a ton of muscle mass correctly just by watching Jeff's videos. Thanks for all you do Jeff!
THANK YOU for helping people relieve and remove pain from their lives. You're doing a great job promoting health. The glaring problem in Jeff's health image is breathing through his mouth in the videos. There are many articles on importance of breathing through the nose. It was even discussed on Joe Rogan's podcast. Hope Jeff will address this issue soon and become even more healthy and appealing.
I totally agree...have to keep moving. I had a herniated disc...spinal fractures t4-6 straight after recovery with a vehicle accident and nothing is helping with this pain. Most of these exercises there is no way I could do those with the herniated disc....yoga actually made a huge difference... and after yr and a half was back to full mobility. Yoga does help a little with the fracture pain but I think I will live with it for life...so there are two choices. Either sit and cry about it or just move on with life and enjoy as much as I can. I can still walk so forever happy.
I was completely skeptical about these workouts as I have degenerative disc, but I followed threw and this actually helped as most exercises do help to extent. Thanks for looking out for us injured folk!!
@Gary Basra I think the machine itself is great for what it does. But that price is ridiculous for a piece of equipment that has 1 use. Maybe 1 day but this workout will do!

There is only so much the spine can take even when in good shape. When In perfect alignment the discs can handle phenomenal forces. Put them at any angle outside of nuetral and it's a gamble.
2:11 - Bar Hang (toes touching the ground)
3:23 - Seated Row (cables or weight band)
4:48 - Reverse Hyperextension (lay chest on bench, keep legs straight, lift feet up). Note that Jeff did a separate video on this exercise (by itself) for fixing low back pain, so this may be the best one to do!
5:47 - Hyper Row - (lay on your chest on a bench with feet under a piano or countertop or something, raise your back, then at the top of the extension, do a row with dumbbells, one arm at a time)
6:44 - Pullthrough (cable or weight band)
After building foundation of strength with the previous exercises, add in dead lift and barbell row:
7:38 - Deadlift
8:57 - Barbell Row
Jeff takes breaks during a workout so that the equipment can get some recovery time
One of the best video out here.
I just started doing kettlebell swings a month ago. I am shocked at how well they have helped w some of my back pain as well.
I'm 22 and I have an immense amount of back pain... and I've been resting A LOT. It just caused more pain. This video is a life saver!
Have you gone to a doctor bro? If not, then I recommend that you do!
Jeff could we get a small series of videos dedicated to those of us who have disc issues but are among the 90% who don't need/want surgery?
I've been doing this for a few months now, it has greatly reduced my back pain. Great things from Jeff as always. Thank you
What about now ? Did you manag to get rid of you pain?
Whenever I am facing a problem in the morning and I always find the solution thanks to Jeff
The video Jeff talked about 100% fixed my back pain. I was able to relieve my sciatic nerve pain with the exercise and was back in the gym the next day! What used to be a 3 week ordeal was fixed in hours. Thanks!!!
Me: trying to get a six pack
Jeff: has six pack on his back
lmaooo
We need a name for that - let's call it a "Backpack"! :-)
Even if you have a six pack, it’s probably Jeff’s
HAHAHAA

How can i thank you jeff you just changed my life bcz back pain was a major problem in my life but not its not anymore i am getting stronger rather than resting

Hey Jeff Cavaliere Athlean X, Guys here!
This sequence has changed my relationship with pain and ability to train. Now able to squat and deadlift every week (pain-free!) thanks to this.
I got chills when i saw Jeff's back during that seated row.
good video. I had low back pain in 2004 and it was due to weakness. When I started to strengthen the back, it went away and never came back. Thanks Jeff
*Intro ends*
*Me expecting the usual WHAT'S UP GUYS JEFF CAVALIERE **ATHLEANX.COM*
Me after: who is this man?

But still waiting for the fix for my relationship
Try adding facepulls to your training routine, see if that helps 😉
@@kevinwelton7437 Ah, thanks, but I tried facepulls and general rear delt work before. It didn't work at all. My delts grew a ton though.
Your previous video helped a lot. I had injured my back while lifting a flower pot. You saved me.

This really helped me! My low back pain resulting from running almost gone in just two days
1. Release tension 2:40
2. Train lats using seated rows 3:50
3. Reverse hyper 5:00
4. Hyper row 6:00
5. Kettlebell deadlifts (an alternative)
6. Deadlifts
7. barbell rows
I hope Jeff is proud of me, because of him I'm doing face pulls 3 times a week and it became my second favourite exercise after deadlift
Last time I was so early,
*I still had a back pain 😂*
Screwed my back up this week and this video comes out unbelievable thank you for answering my prayers
The explanations are going on in another level 👏🏻🔥
I am definitely going to give this a shot. I am out from work due to low back pain. I have been through 2 chiropractors, a neurosurgeon, 2 spinal injections and 2 8-10 week sessions of physical therapy. None of which prescribed these movements and none of which alleviated my pain. Wish I had seen this a year ago!
Please start sport specific series targetting explosive power 🙏
Reverse hypers, alone, has done wonders to address my back pain.
I owe it all to Jeff!
I have a pathology on lower back since I was 18 and I know how helpful it is.
A dehydrated L4-L5 can be really painful.
Thanks Jeff. 👏💪
My Mattress Firm mattress has ruined my back. Never had pain in my life. Need you. Thank you!
I can verify that strengthening your back will decrease your pain, even though it felt like my spine was the source of the pain.
I have the same problem, my entire spine feels like it being squeezed every morning. Im gonna try these to see if its really a muscle problem
benny1051 that was exactly my problem, just don’t try too much with your weak back, that’s why he’s given these exercises in tiers. Good luck, man!
it the glutes as well cos low back paint can anterior pelvic tilt ....... that why jeffs training glutes as well
Did you have sharp pain in certain movements? Like it fell the nerves where being contacted?
Both
The time frame depends on your progress speed and that depends on so many factors is just unpredictable.

I can attest to this: deadlifting for about 2 years fixed my lower back. But my biggest problem is upper back pain, I dont know how to fix that.
When you deadlift do you feel soreness in your lower back the next day?
@@jannickel3050 I think it's obvious to feel sore in the lower back after deadlifts with proper form ofcouce
Face pulls!
Ideally you should feel the most soreness in your glutes after dead lifting.
First see a Physical Therapist.
Then possibly rows, face pulls, & pull ups.
As a chiropractor I can say these exercises will serve as a great differential diagnosis tool. If they make your back pain worse or do not help at all, you have a joint problem and need to visit a good chiropractor who makes specific spinal adjustments.
The way jeff showed his back when he was bending over.. i thought he was an alien
I just literally had a conversation with a friend regarding back pain and here comes Jeff with a video.
It almost seems like Jeff stays lean just so he could show us that muscles are firing
Apparently he’s not natural
Matt Cerone literally zero proof of that

Dear Jeff,
Thank you for the video.

Jeff has 2 PhD.
First one is on "Stop! You are losing your gain" subject and another one is on "Physiology."
Fun fact: You and I are in the comment section without even having watched the entire video
I was completely skeptical about these workouts as I have degenerative disc, but I followed threw and this actually helped as most exercises do help to extent. Thanks for looking out for us injured folk!!
Reverse hyper...I seen the machine simulation of this that titan makes that goes for 400 to 800...I can do this for free...thank you...
@Gary Basra I think the machine itself is great for what it does. But that price is ridiculous for a piece of equipment that has 1 use. Maybe 1 day but this workout will do!
100% agree with not resting when it comes to back pain. Something as basic as going for a walk will help relieve my pain usually.
Dude: *(Taking a rest in his workout)*
