Found this video in a depressive slump. Came back the other night while drinking. Holy shit. Chills and tears. War is ungodly awful. I feel for everyone who endures it directly and indirectly.
My Great Uncle served in the US Army. 328th Infantry Regiment, 82nd Division. He was killed in action in Meuse-Argonne France Oct 8 1918. Yep, he served with Sgt. Alvin York, and gave his life on the day Sgt. York earned the Medal of Honor. This song brings tears to my eyes every time.
Those men were all a different breed. I can't help but feel that all the service personnel that were lost in Iraq and Afghanistan were lost for nothing. Sacrificed to line politicians' pockets. I joined the army at 16 and believed in keeping my family friends and all my fellow countrymen and women safe. That was the only Cause I believed in. I felt I owed previous generations who sacrificed everything so I could have the freedom I often take for granted today. The only way I could practically do make a difference or so I thought was serve in the Army having had multiple family members serve before me in all three services. I was also inspired by my grandads and my uncle they were all decent hard working genuine and as tough as they come. “Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.” As the saying goes. And so it continues with the confilct in Ukraine and many other places in the world. Will we ever learn ?
As an Iraq war vet, I feel the pain. But never let the memory of those who have fallen for something they thought was better then themselves be forgotten.
humanity didn't learn from ww1. they started ww2. Now we have war again in europe. that's the real tragedy. "the killing and dying it was all done in vein [...] oh, willie mcbride, it all happened again...and again and again[...]" Fallout was right. "War never changes"
Rest in peace my extended family who fought for the Fatherland in the great war. Wilhelm Friedrich born December 11, 1880. Kill in action on the 26 of Aug. 1917 Friedrich born September 5, 1884. On the enemy side but weren't any different to us. Just soldiers fighting for their land and family. RIP to WW1 vets of both sides who were let down by their leaders. ✝️

Listen carefully, all war proponents, and as long as you are not willing to send your daughters onto the frontline, shut the f up and listen again and reconsider.

Laura, a wise man once said "It's better for the world to think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."... you should consider doing that
Well how do you do young Willie McBride, Do you mind if I sit here down by your graveside, And rest for a while in the warm summer sun, I've been walking all day and I'm nearly done. I see by your gravestone you were only 19, When you joined the great fallen in 1916, Well I hope you died quick and I hope you died clean, Or Willie McBride was it slow and obscene. Did they beat the drum slowly, Did they play the fife lowly, Did they sound the dead march, as they lowered you down, Did the band play the last post and chorus, Did the pipes play the Flowers of the Forest. And did you leave a wife or a sweetheart behind, In some loyal heart is your memory enshrined, And though you died back in 1916, To that loyal heart you're forever 19. Or are you a stranger without even a name, Forever enshrined behind some old glass pane, In an old photograph all torn tattered and stained, And faded to yellow in a brown leather frame. Did they beat the drum slowly, Did they play the fife lowly, Did they sound the dead march, as they lowered you down, Did the band play the last post and chorus, Did the pipes play the Flowers of the Forest. The sun's shining down on these green fields of France, The warm wind blows gently and the red poppies dance, The trenches have vanished long under the plow No gas, no barbed wire, no guns firing now. But here in this graveyard it's still "No Man's Land", The countless white crosses in mute witness stand, To man's blind indifference to his fellow man, And a whole generation that were butchered and damned. Did they beat the drum slowly, Did they play the fife lowly, Did they sound the dead march, as they lowered you down, Did the band play the last post and chorus, Did the pipes play the Flowers of the Forest. And I can't help but wonder, oh Willie McBride Do all those who lie here know why they die, Did you really believe them when they told you the cause Did they really believe that this war would end wars. Well, the suffering, the sorrow, the glory, the shame The killing and dying it was all done in vain, Oh Willie McBride it all happened again, And again, and again, and again, and again

As an former military man this kicks in hard
I agree
Me too, brother. Me too.
The players change, the game stays the same.
Word Word.

Will we ever learn ?
Sadly no, there will always be pootin with expansionist power hungry ideas.
So there will always be soldiers, and war.

May all those courageous souls who passed in the Great War rest in peace.
They were not courageus, they were victims

You have my respect Sir, thank you for your brave service
Eric Bogle is a helluva song writer. I heard John McDermott's version and fell in love with it.
It all happened again, and again, and again, ...

Great video!
No more brother wars.
I've done a cover of this Eric Bogle song, can I use the images from your video to illustrate my version on you tube?
Finbar fury has the Only voice for this song Finbar Fury and Davie Arthur
It is saddening. For it did, does and will continue to happen again. Again and again.
So that others might live.
Dude I feel chills.

Honor to all heroes ❤
Thanx Dropkick murphys ❤
Reminds me of "Letters From War"
You're
Blessed be those that died the soul that has has died before their time
Wow, I didn't expect this. Great! Tears are on my cheeks! Well done!
No wonder this country is going down the crapper, the best and brightest have killed off by the power that be
I have to admit it, this song made me cry, and i hardly ever cry for anything
pooh, thats hard stuff!
Murphys! "Hooyah!!"
🤝🤝🙏🙏
This doesnt sound like DKM, sounds like the prouges
It's "pipes of the fallen"
And they"played the pipes lowley"
At least get the lyrics right for respect.
no its not its "play the fife lowly"
And "Flowers of the Forest" is a traditional Scottish funeral song.
Cringe
