That's a very good choice for an all-around rifle. I love the 7mm Rem Mag a truly great cartridge. I didn't hear how much the rifle weighted. Perhaps someone can fill me in on that.
For me, I went with a 300 Win Mag in a Remington 700. I purchased the rifle thinking of re-building it with a new stock and trigger. However, after cleaning up the manufacturer trigger and shooting it, I left it alone. I can get 3 touching holes at 100 yards with 180 grain bullet from Barnes shop. I mounted a Leopold 3x9 scope and called it done.
If it should ever open up, I'll re-build it then but until then leaving it as is.

Ron is becoming one of my favorite gun gurus. Although I own a 7mm Rem Mag I only pull it out when I know I might have to take a longer shot than my other rifles can comfortably make. I restrict myself to second focal plane scopes zeroed for 6 inch point of aim. That probably tells you a great deal about me and my hunting ethics.

I have had a Remington 700, 7 Mag since back in the 70’s. Glass bedded, trigger tweaked. It has had an 8lb keg of IMR 4831 passed down its barrel over the years and it’s still going strong. It never fails to impress me still. My favorite and fastest killing elk bullet is a 162gr Hornady Interlock BT. I’ve seen those work better than the bonded bullets. Trashes the lungs!! 190’s out of a 300 Weatherby are pretty impressive too!

The caliber that started my craze for oddball levers and other calibers. My first self-purchased rifle was a Ruger 77R in 7mmRM in the mid 80's. That rifle was like a light-switch on deer. So much so, I decided to reel in the capability a bit and moved on to single-shot pistols, etc. I think it is still superior to even the much ballyhooed, recent 27 Nosler. There are existing bullets that share similar BCs as the 27N's best bullets, and the 7mmRM equals those bullet's velocities with existing data. I have full faith in the 7mmRM. I just don't use it much anymore, having replaced it with some adequate 7mm-08s, .358Ws, various quarterbores.... Excelllent choice.

Your rifle looks similar to one I made in the early 80s. I used a Brown Precision classic stock, SAKO A III action, Douglas #2 contour 22 inch barrel and Pachmayr pad. I chambered mine for the 280 Remington cartridge. I sent a compact Leopold 3 to 9 power AO to the Leopold and had target turrets installed. The complete outfit with sling weighs a touch over 7 pounds. Now that was more than 30 years ago and back then nobody thought much of my rifle. I think they might have been a little wrong don’t you. As far as being too long for woods work isn’t quite a problem. My rifle is about the same length as my Beretta AL 390 Silver Mallard in 20 bore I use for Grouse hunting. It has a 24 inch tube that is quite handy. There is a serious difference between a hand layup fiberglass or Kevlar rifle stock than molded stocks on rifles. They reduce recoil because the stock absorbs recoil like a sponge; they are far lighter and stronger too. That is one reason they cost a lot more; another is the fit is exactly correct not just close. I made two of these rifles still have both. The second one is a 338 with 26 inch barrel it weighs 8½ pounds. It is the lightest recoiling 338 I ever shot and the most accurate one too. I put a number 5 contour barrel on that one. There is a slight advantage the 7 mag has over the 280 however; it takes a lot more powder to get that advantage. The most important shot is the first one for a hunting rifle. 🎇🤠🦉🎇

I have a Weatherby 7 mm Mag. After using several other calibers in the .30 -.300 range for Elk in Montana I stayed with the Wby for elk . The great range of cartridges available for this rifle from 139 to 175 gr makes it the one rifle solution for all big game hunting from antelope to grizzly,ie all big game in North America. I believe it would also be “ enough gun “ for most game in Africa up to and including lion( but not buffalo, rhino, elephant).

The 7mm mG is a flat shooter no doubt but look at these terminal ballistics using a non magnum 30-06
Shooting the nosler ABLR 210 grain .661 BC At 2600 fps mv
500 yds = 1800+ ft lbs of energy
600 yds =1500+ ft lbs of energy
700 yds =1400+ ft lbs of energy
800 yds =1250+ ft lbs of energy
New VLD bullets and powders have drastically increases the effective range of the old 06
But still love the 7mm mag as I own both

Many bullets other than copper do not perform well at 7mm mag velocities and pass through before properly expanding.
You don't need excessive velocities to kill all North America. Big game .
Most big game are killed at ranges under 300 yds..with new powders and monolithic bullets the 06 kill range has been extended out to 600 yds .what more do you really need?
Barrel life of a 7mm mag is only about half that of the 30-06 as well .

I like a good 7mm, but settled on a .300 Win. Mag. as my own choice as my "one rifle" solution, years ago. I like a 165-168 grain high bc bullet. I think to, that accuracy in hunting rifles does not need to be varmint or bench standard. If Ol' Betsy is shooting into an inch at 100 yards with a good high performance load, no big game animal is going to get away from a seasoned hunter/rifleman. 1/4 inch groups are fun and satisfying to shoot with a hunting rifle and I have shot my share of them, but they are not a requirement. Thanks for another informative video Ron!

The first rifle I bought was a Ruger M77 in 7mm Rem Mag purchased when I was 14 years old in 1973. I still have it and will have it until I die. It will handle anything from chucks to at least black bear. I’d prefer a little more for Grizzlies or other animals who have a propensity to attack, but I wouldn’t feel terribly undergunned if all I had was my 7 mm.

There is no doubt that the 300 Weatherby Magnum is the best all-around hunting cartridge, if the person can handle the recoil. More energy more bullet weight for the longer ranges of sheep and goat. Heavier bullet weight for moose and Big Bear. I find myself carrying a 300 Weatherby more than any other rifle. High Velocity, flat trajectory. It truly is a world-class cartridge.

The 7mm Rem Mag is a fantastic cartridge and a solid choice for an all around one rifle battery on any non-dangerous game species. I think we could arguably go with the .280 AI for nearly identical performance in a more modern beltless case. If one was going to stick to deer with the occasional elk inside the ranges most of us hunt most of the time, one could even go with a 7mm-08. Either way, if I was to limit myself to one rifle for everything, mine would be a 7mm of some sort, hands down, no questions. The 7mms just bring so much to the table.

Older Video.... but I've been searching for the 1 gun hunting rifle Unicorn compromise for years and may have found mine. First, I pick the 300 Win Mag for everything from deer to moose out to 450 yards or so. I also want a lightweight bolt action with stainless 22 inch barrel. I expect to use this go-to rifle in thick black timber to mountains. So I do not want a long barrel. To make up velocity loss, I hope to use Hornady Superformance, when I expect longer shots. For elk and moose 200 grainers. My rifle choice is the 2021 Seekins Element in 300 WIN. 6lbs, 22 inch threaded barrel, stainless, 20 moa rail with bubble, removable brake, nice stock with sling flush cups.... This is the rifle I've been waiting for!

I’ve used my Remington 700 BDL DM 7mm for deer for many years and I’ve never had an issue with excessive damage after a shot. I shoot lung shot only and never had any shock or gel up the ribs and into the neck like I used to get with my Remington 30:06 pump. I stopped using the pump because of that. I shoulder shot a moose at 190 yards and you could eat the meat a few inches away from the entry hole in the clavicle. Can’t beat my Remington 7mm with a fantastic Jewell trigger set at 2.5 pounds. I’m not a big guy and the recoil doesn’t bother me at all.

Nothing against the Borden Timberline, but I have had a Tikka T3 in 7MM Rem Mag for 15 years that shoots groups like that for 10% of the cost of the Borden rifle. For those without an extra $5K for the Borden you can still pick up a Tikka for under $600.

I have a browning ab2 in .270 that will group under 1/2” (if I out it on a sled, I’m not that good yet lol). Granted Browning isn’t cheap, but its not $5k either.
I also have a $300 savage and a $600 savage that will shoot sub 1/2 moa.
I would understand paying $5k for a rifle if it had beautiful engraving work, a stunning black walnut stock, and shot lights out, but $5k just to have a smooth and accurate rifle, like your Tikka, smooth and accurate can be achieved for 1/5 of the Borden’s cost.

🗣I have a RUGER M77 in .338 WIN MAG. To TAME the recoil, my Gunsmith installed a super soft recoil pad, and installed 4 VILES of hydraulic fluid (2 in stock, 2 in forearm), this reduced the FELT RECOIL energy (shooting 225gr SP)
to just below.300 WM and just above the 30/06. SWEET to shoot now. Plus, I reload for it. 🤠

Get a 28 Nosler to try out Mr Ron.I have one an love it and I think it would become more popular if it wasn’t for the quirky name that Nosler gives their stuff making people confused. For long range hunting with a 7lb rifle with a brake on it I don’t think it gets any better,it really is a laser and absolutely hammers stuff and doesn’t kick as bad as some may think with a brake on it due to the light grain bullets in the 160-175 range that a 7mm really likes 👍🏻

    • @semperfi6288
      @semperfi6288 3 года назад +1

Hmmmmm. Good for sure. The 28 Nosler is a barrel burner, more so than a 7mm Rem Mag, Maybe even more than a 30-378 Weatherby. Shoots flat, and I like it. How ever, the 28 Nosler is way more expensive to shoot, can't find ammo or components for the 28 Nosler. The 7mm Rem Mag with carefully hand loaded ammo comes very close to the 28 factory ammo. I shoot 168 grain ALCO hand loaded bullets at around 3,200 fps with a longer barrel (depending on conditions). 1/2 MOA....down to 1/4 MOA with no signs of over pressure. I'm good. What are your mission parameters? What are you going to be shooting at? At what distance? A current hand load of mine is transonic at 2,600 yards with the 7mm Rem Mag. Very high B.C. Proprietary bullet. Bullet selection is so important when comming up with what you are trying to do. I can make a 7mm-08 Shoot up to a mild 7mm Rem Mag, and I can take a 7mm Rem Mag and load it down to the 7mm-08 range. Ron has talked about the 28 Nosler in some of his videos. Hope this helps.

I think that is a Swarovski Z5 3.5-18x44 with the BT. I have two with the BRX reticule. The Z5 maximises the shooters ability to achieve the potential of a rifle. Turn it up to zero and down to suit the field conditions. They have a 1-inch tube and are light. I can't recommend them highly enough. The Z6 and Z8 are newer designs, but they have 30 mm tubes, so even with a similar 40(ish) mm objective lens they are heavier.

Weatherbys are super off the shelf as well, in either 7mm or .300. You can get superb performance from off the shelf ammo although it can be a bit pricey. But if you're handloading, not much difference as long as your brass lasts. When it comes time for some new brass just buy some Norma ammo, shoot it and save the brass. You can typically find it for about half the price of Wby ammo and it's the same brass.
