Even if, at the time of observation, the spaceship was passing by the earth. That's because, in the ship reference frame, the distance to Mars is 20 times shorter than in the earth's reference frame.

      It happened both 'now' and 11* minutes ago. 'now' is relative and depends on the reference frame. From Earth's reference frame it happened 'now'. From Mars' reference frame it happened 11 minutes ago. Both statements are true. From Andromeda Galaxies reference frame humans don't exist yet.

      @@malachiwiens2455 this was managed from JPL, California. We still have power, and last I checked, Mars was visible from here during the landing, so DSN Goldstone could get telem from Perseverance, MRO and MAVEN.
      EDIT: by visible from California, I meant that it was above the horizon, not that it could be seen with a naked eye.

    I have seen this footage about 6 times now and it still brings a tear to my eye and a feeling of immense joy and pride for those who made it possible. Well done to all at NASA. Now let's hope that Ingenuity too has a great deployment and all the flight tests go to plan.

    I remember the first pictures coming back from one of the Viking landers in 1976. There was one thin vertical strip coming every couple minutes. I was a kid and hoping to see a Martian or two but it was still amazing to see the surface of Mars back then

      You do realize Mars in significantly further away than the moon right? It took Neil and buzz 3 days to get to the moon. It took perseverance 9 months. And they will have better footage.
