You can tell how good a musician is by the musicians that he chooses that choose to play with him. John Baptiste is a MONSTER musician.
Somebody open a window, it just got real funky in here!
LOL!! right. LOVE IT!!!
Jon said I can’t let pharell and the weeknd steal all my thunder do your thing Jon you a cool cat
Jon is on a whole other level then the weekend.
Pharells new song is very bad though. That autotune was cringey as hell.
Adam Tak big facts! smh. pharrell is by far the greatest producer of all time...imo. but that song...THAT song! 🤢🤮
Vagrant Society: I saw your post and had to respond. Before I continue, I just want to let you know I agree with your statement.
A performance and real musical talent/musicianship like this is what I always refer to, when I get into arguments with others, who "claim" that rappers and hip-hop artists are great musicians. Not even close! They may be great entertainers, but to suggest they are great musicians is a stretch, to say the least (LoL!).
Quite frankly, anyone who does not play a musical instrument (and well) cannot "claim" to be a musician, with any credibility. It takes a lot of talent/musical knowledge/practice hours, and developing your craft (with others who you can learn from and compliment), to get to this level of excellence. Even Jon Batiste himself has mentioned that he's still learning, and getting better! Imagine that! By the way, that trumpet solo was off the hook! Unreal!
So in reference to your post, both Pharell and the Weeknd may be great entertainers, but they just don't have this kind of musical capacity, to be compared to this level of musical excellence, by Jon Batiste and his crew! Amazing!
In closing, I wish you a happy holiday season for the rest of 2019, and a prosperous new year in 2020. See you on the other side of the calendar soon! Enjoy!
Cheers, Sam.
Sam Aduampoma I appreciate that you put in time to break down the comment happy holidays
Excellent performance! Glad to see Jon's talents highlighted!
Stephen got SOOO lucky to have Jon be a part of his show. And so are we.
Jon Batiste AND his band.
Yes! No band is any better than it's weakest link. This band doesn't have weak links.
Stay Human
Jon's a leader, like when he plays those improv sessions with a singer, he just leads so well he can bring out the best of any musician. The greats have a quality about them. Yeah his tv band is amazing but Jon will pull the best out of whoever he plays with
@@danielp7394 - it's not his TV band. This band was with him before this TV show.
@@aylbdrmadison1051 Me searching for “ The Weakest Link Band “
That trumpet solo deserves a standing ovation on its own. Damn fine song and band.
Such a talent Jon Batiste is.
jan morgan is a much better judge of talent than that annoying Jonny B
Thanks, Yoda.
@Jonny B oof!
and his band members!!
Talent + Personality (and I percieve, but obv don't know, a 'well of kindness' in him) is rare indeed.
Now that's what I call jazz!
Talent! Such a smooth song. Gotta get the vinyl.
In live performances, I love it when you can tell the musicians are having fun!
There used to be a show in Canada called 'Night Ride' where they just drove around at night, playing smooth jazz, and this brought me right back to my insomniac youth, watching the nightlife pass by at 3 AM. Made my night.
That sounds absolutely awesome.
That's nice, but please don't call this music "smooth jazz." For one thing, even though it's clearly jazz-influenced, it's really more in the tradition of soul/RnB/funk. But more importantly, the term "smooth jazz" has been ruined by being associated with the likes of Kenny G. This ain't that.
Sounds perfectly chill.
OOOoooo a new show to hunt for! thanks! (well "new" old show) ((kinda sounds like it would have a Fishing With John vibe))
He is GOOD!
Yay! That Juillard School of Music education has paid off. The syncopation of the beat and the brass, it's completely on point; so structured but so free-form.
He's like the king of jazz for our time!
@@stevieme8642 Im personally not that well veesed in Jazz but the way he plays makes me wanna dove onto that type of music
That Roy Hargrove education didn't hurt either🙄
horns fkn nailed it
@Tattle Boad ok, a bit extreme.
This man is only 33, and feels like the coolest uncle we'd have ever known.
From the glimpses of him on the show you could tell he was good, but got damn, Jon. Shheeeit.
This goes straight inside. My whole body reacts.
Discovered this guy after watching ‘Soul’ as he wrote the Jazz music in it.. unreal.. like a sort of street jazz vibe.. very New Orleans sound, with the funk/soul flare! Awesome stuff, like a modern thelonious monk
I was there for this .. unbelievable talent
Even though I'm (certified) musically-challenged, I can tell that was an excellent arrangement and an extraordinary performance.
Just started Chronology of a Dream... I've only given it one listening, and I may be already to declare it one of may favorites...
I got chills. Definitely opened my ears to some jazz
One of the greatest musicians of our time. Colbert is lucky.
I love how the horn section came just on the verge of losing timing but completely turning the whole rhythm section into a kind of half beat? It's hard to explain, but I felt it, and suppose that's what counts? Awesome muso's doing their thing. Jon?!! YOU ROCK!!
That's because the horn section is playing with a swing while Jon is playing a much more straight rhythm.
Intentional "loss of timing" and it was amazing
I noticed that as well.
Syncopation, baby!
The best part of the show is when John performs for us tv or internet watchers! 🥰😍😘😎😎😎😎😎
JB is the bomb....he will help to transform the world through his music and his personality.
I love it! I can hear George Duke, Ramsey Lewis, and Stevie Wonder running throughout this piece. Gotta get this!
I hear Pat Metheny Group and George Benson in the scat.
Ooo ya Ramsey how have I forgotten about him
And a whole lotta New Orleans
It calms me so much I just wanna go to sleep with this on repeat all night, the song feels... warm and safe.
A bold, provocative, and original performance. I'm impressed at the quality of this production. Stephen always looks like a proud sibling every time Jon performs his original work.
Damnnn 3:45 gave me chills. That roll in was super dope. Jon is just a really talented/well practiced musical genius.
I was there that night...It was fantastic. The sound system in the Ed Sullivan theater rivals any sound studio I've been in. We sat right in the middle. It blew us away. Baptise and his band selection is off the hook. Listen with headphones. Cheers
Instant classic.
He da man!
Imagine if Jon, quest and Reggie all hopped on the same track
This is Absolutely Fantastic!!!! 😎👌🏾💯✅🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 I love the colorful music composition from this diverse ensemble. The anticipations, walkdowns, sharps, flats, blue notes, scatting, and overall musicality of everyone in this Jazzy Masterpiece made me forget that this was being done on the show! I loved everything about this performance and everyone that joined in in this collaboration! #JonBatiste #Blacck 💯✅ *Added To Smooth Jazz Playlist*
Sounds dreamy! I really dig the jazziness of Jon and Stay Human! A lost art form.
Jon, thank you for sharing your gift. Band, thank you for being TIGHT!
Oh My Sweet Lawd. The Groove is relentless! I love his little vocalisations and scat singing too!
I love this so much!! Especially the open and close piano, haven’t heard any authentic jazz like this in years 😍
This joint is smooth
Amazing...Reminds me of the neo-soul genre out of Detroit or Chicago. I love it
Rare case of an actual musical virtuoso being a part of a #1 late night show band
The set decoration is outstanding here.
Talk about everyone playing in the pocket. What an awesome band, and a great tune.
Smooth👏🏻👏🏻
Dammmmmmmmmmm. I can start my days to this. GREAT GREAT GREAT.
That was a wonderful performance. Thank you, Jon! Also shout out to Patrick Bartley from J-MUSIC Ensemble on the sax. What a pleasant surprise.
Reminds me a lot of 70's Stevie Wonder. Songs in the Key of Life.
Exactly what I was thinking!
O yea I definitely feel the vibe. I need a Manhattan while listening to this
I was thinking any town at night would do - total vibe song for going out somewhere fun
OMG! Like a mini jazz festival in one song! 👍🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
That was all kinds of sexy! 💕 JB does it again! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I think Jon Batiste, Labrinth and Leon Bridges share the same great grandfather
Love Leon and Jon - thanks for mentioning Labrinth! New to me and he's great - started w Going Gets Tough - wild creativity!
Jon Batiste is a fucking legend.
This generation's Mozart
Nice to hear good musicians play together. Way too much over produced shit today
Very talented Jon....I'd give him some!😈
Now that's jazz! He's scattin'. Love this band. So talented.
Jon, I enjoy and respect everything you do. I have one request: list the names of the very talented musicians who play with you. I would love to get to know them as well.
Jazz might just come back!
What a natural talent and an excellent band to boot. Jon has been my favorite for years and the original reason I watched the show.
💐Rich, complex, funky, perfect💐Jon Batiste & his band are dope
Colbert is so lucky to have a prodigy like Jon Batiste beside him on the LSSC. 💙
0:30 I wish I were Jon's piano; he could play me all night and day!
🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹
So so fresh
Goodness. I hope Jon and Stephen never separate...
🎼It's December 10, 2019 and Jon Batiste 🎹 his Band are still 🎻🎺🎸🎷🎵 AWESOME 👏
wonderful
⚡💡⚡Seriously would love to see more of Johns work here on the channel ⚡💡⚡
Damn this is so pleasing to the ears and entertaining to watch.
I was lucky enough to be at a taping a few years back and remember that the band was the most surprising part about the experience; the music they were playing between shots was really really good.
oh Yeah, really, Nice. I dropped this into three of my playlists, ZONENN, RustixChiLL and BRAINWAVE to be enjoyed at a moments thought
JB and his band are too good to be the backing band for a late night talk host, as great as LSSC is. I wish there was still good money in just creating music and playing venues for jazz musicians. It's sad really. They deserve a lot more, because they have real talent
Oh, Jeah! Man, super classy!! THAT''S Music!! Watch those hands walk smoothly across those accords!!
Just lovely Jon, I could see people dancing to that scat! Keep playing!
That is so smooth it's like a old smoky Bourbon on the tongue! People forget how much talent is on that stage with Jon, and of course in him as well. Get the chance to catch these guys live..do it, it's more than worth it, and I'll repeat that experience when I can.
This was a great song! Glad you guys uploaded this!
Wondrous music like back-in-the-day! Can't get enough of this. New Orleans own. You Go Baby!!!!
THAT WAS FIRE!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
That young man was raised in The Funk; from a great dynasty of musicians in NOLA; he can't help it!
Anyone catch the brain-hand-mouth coordination it take to scat and play a solo at the same time?!
He is cute and talented. Now i am going to go check out his songs and album because i really enjoyed this song. Such a masterpiece.
Love you Jon all the way from Houston Texas😍
Go Jon! 🤗🤗
Damn, Jon! I haven’t had a song make me feel that way in a loooooong time.
3 people thumbed this down 🤔 ... why?!?!?!
Because it's no better than elevator music?
envy
I had never actually heard his music. I'm blown away. He should do a project with Esperanza Spalding.
That’d be a hell of a collab 🙌✨
Real music here
Im goin to take a break from Hip Hop and listen to more Jazz if it sounds like this
I love this
Why would anyone give this a thumbs down? (shakes head)
Oh, I get it: the Trumpies don't like the name. (shakes head again)
THAT was a DREAM and stay human I loved it liked it you guys are the BEST Got me GOING OOO OoOO OoooU
Wow, beautiful. Such a beautiful song from a beautiful mind. That song puts a smile on my face and a little umph in my step, thank you.
Love love love Jon Batiste
He’s good
Wow this song goes!
I don't deserve such cool. Thank you. 💓🎶
Love, Love, Love!!!!! What a great musician and band!
Kind of reminiscent of George Benson and Ramsey Lewis era. Very nice.
You know when I heard this the first time I thought Ramsey Lewis, George Duke, and Stevie Wonder on the scat, but I agree that the scat does sound like George Benson. Maybe a baby George Benson scat. I really enjoyed this homage to the greats.
New Orleans produces quality musicians
Jon Batiste; a homemade gift for the human soul.
🎶🕉️💜
Perfection every time with Jon ❤️
