Very thorough; the stop motion at the beginning was fantastic.
Thank you! Did my best to get all the info in :)
Congrats and let me also join everyone else in saying the intro/unboxing was really cool. Must have been hard to do that stop motion take and not just rip the box open and start playing. I already learned something from this video (I didn’t know how to get the OP-Z audio into the OP-1f, now I do) and I look forward to future ones! Also, now I can’t unsee the stop button being off center 😜
Thank you!
I had already waited for more than a month, so I was okay with the little extra wait ;)
Yeah the misaligned print is a bit annoying...but I am at a point where I don't care too much about that. I still think it's an amazing piece of gear.
Can't wait to make some tunes either!
Nice review! That was a great unboxing. I’m really glad you picked this up. You seemed to really enjoy the OG OP-1. I’m also glad you called out the centering of the button labels. If TE wants people to see their devices as functional design pieces, they need to deliver the whole package. The tape system is still a little foreign to me, but I’m almost certain I’m going to end up buying this thing. Thanks, Son Wu!
Thank you!
I thought I would dislike the tape more, before I got the OG. But it is actually quite nice coming from the OP-Z. You have to commit.
And also resampling is so easy and well implemented. Resampling 4 tracks at once for example, just by lifting and dropping.
Great overview and amazing production! I think I’m happy with my op-z for now but was really interested to learn more about this new device.
Thanks, the OP-Z is great in its own way. Very different from the OP-1
Congratulations with your OF-1 and what a nice review man! I love this machine already ;)
Hey, thanks for stopping by! Love your OP-1 work✌️
the stop-motion unpacking was awesome! Looking forward to your creations with the field
Thanks! I think I will do more of this in future, it's fun :)
I finally pulled the trigger on an "open box" one from Musician's Friend and I can't be any more excited. Time to finally upgrade from the OG-1. I've found your TE content to be super helpful.
Thanks, glad I can help you get to know your OP-1 quicker!
The switch to stereo is massive. When I've heard comparisons of the mono output versus the OP-1 it sounds almost identical. But when you add that stereo effect it brings so many cool layers.
In the end the sound difference is significant. The OG has charm...but this one is a lot more versatile. Even effects I barely used before seem useful now.
@@SONWU I watched a video previously that did a direct comparison of mono output on the Field vs the OG-1 and they basically sounded exactly the same, so I hesitated to jump on the Field. But now hearing this I think I'll have to make that jump!
I loved that unboxing sequence. It reminded me of the animations that use to be on TV for kids shows. Very cool. 😊
That's a wonderful compliment, thank you!
incredible unboxing sequence. that was very dope!!
The stop motion at the beginning was simple but effective. Really nice done ! Btw great video as usual 👍
Thank you very much :) more stop motion in future...hopefully!
@@SONWU I don't know that much uses for stop motion in your kind of videos except for unboxings. But I would love to see what you will come up with :)
great review, can’t wait to hear your first tracks on it!
Thanks! soon…
Great, great video! You picked out such good things to talk about, thank you 🙏
Thanks for watching and your nice feedback!
Amazing video. The stop motion unboxing takes the production not a new level! I also appreciate the balance of new features with the use cases that make those features valuable. Thanks again!
Hey Sean, thanks so much!
I am glad the stop motion is bringing some joy to the people :)
A few more improvements on the OP-1 field (feel free to let me know anything I've missed):
- random LFO can be assigned to 1 specific parameter (or all parameters of a page)
- LFO shape can be changed
- drum samples can now be 20 seconds long
*Ahem* Pardon my asking but when you recorded with the microphone, did you do a playback that I missed?
Hey there, great review. But I'm confused on how songs are made. Once you record the 4 track tape and fill it up can you then record more of the same song on another tape then bring them together somehow ? Thanks any info would be appreciated.
@@dudeseriously79I was super confused too! 😂
@@evanseesred He's like, yeah, I'm not doing another video to make up for that oversight. Lol
That was a great unboxing. Nice editing
Thanks!!! 🙏
Thanks a lot for all your op1&field content, your videos are awesome
My pleasure!
Very thorough and detailed video, my only complaint was I kept losing focus constantly thinking about how cool the stop motion intro was.
In all seriousness, you've pretty much sold me on the device, my only debate is whether I sell an organ or my first born to afford it
Well…I don’t wanna put any ideas in your mind. But selling the first born will give you more free time to play with the OP-1 😂
Great video! Really thinking about getting this one...
Hey Jef! Thanks for stopping by
I would say it's 100% worth it.
Great review! Very thorough. Thanks.
Thanks!
Could watch unboxing content in stop motion like that all day, man that was good. Nice work.
😁
Thank you for the overview! I wish they would show the waveforms on the tape tracks
Yes, that would indeed be nice!
haha nice unboxing ! so happy you got one, agreed with everyone, you deserve it !
Thank you very much… many videos to be made on this :)
Phenomenal opening with the great unboxing!
Thank you very much :)
that was the coolest unboxing I've ever seen. Instant sub
Thanks!!!
This was the best comparison of the different tapes that I've heard. Made me super excited, they sound great.
Being able to rename stuff sounds nice, but man it doesn't look easy.
Thank you! The tapes really sound a lot different.
Especially when changing tape speeds, it's a lot of fun.
Yeah renaming is a bit slow, but at least it's there.
Yeah I think the keyboard should Shift and short cut alphabet minus X & Z.
Nice intro man !! Love it
Appreciate it!
Congrats on you Receiving the Field. Great video!
A little comment on the Disc mini tape.. the disc mini adds aliasing, you can here this in full if you record high pitched stuff and turn the tape speed down.
Thank you 🙏
I have to play with the disk mini more…there is so much new stuff to discover and enjoy. And that battery, wow. Took me 3 days to empty it.
@@SONWU yeah the battery is really impressive!
Oh brother... the unboxing was insane. Great sound design as well.

THANK YOUUUU!
As a new owner I find these valuable, as I mentioned earlier - shocked how well you know all these tidbits because not ALL are in the manual. Thank you.
Thank you! I am glad my obsession helps you :D
@@SONWU I'm mostly shocked by how well you enter drum steps and they are good beats. That comes form nothing more than writing a lot of bets over years on step-drum-computers :). You should do a video on that alone. Do you find yourself using the apes or the pattern for drums, more?
What a very clear video, thank you !
Thank you for the video, subscribed!
Thanks!
Stop motion unboxing? I've enjoyed a few of your videos before but SUBSCRIBED now hehe that was great :)
Ok I've had time to watch the whole video now. Well done! Loved it. The best video on OP-1 Field so far, imo - you cover things I didn't know yet even though I've been doing lots of research and mine arrived the day before yesterday and I've been using it. Like extra encoder clicks not mentioned in the manual. This is the video I'll refer people to who think it's the same thing as the original just costs more - it's really a lot more than that. It's a way more professional product now.
Hey, thanks for your nice feedback and for subscribing!
I tried my best to get the most important facts together (missed the 20 sec sample upgrade).
Listing all these things made me realize how many things they have actually improved!
And I am looking forward to what's about to come…I bet there are some nice updates waiting for us :)
Incredible unboxing cinematography. Loved the stop motion, how did you do that?
Thank you! I used an iPhone stop motion app...and took 317 pictures :)
@@SONWU wow that is insane, love the dedication tho. Definitely worth it
Love the stop motion intro! ❤
Thanks!
A new video and a N E W machine for SON WU! Video starts with a great animation … lets see what comes next ;) congrats mate
Thank you!!!
The wait was worth it :)
Bro the sound design for this intro and or unboxing are soooo crispy
Thanks, much appreciated!!!
Excellent review! And now I really need to swap OG OP1 for a field... just need to magic some money from somewhere.
Good luck with the magic...sadly I don't offer a class on that type of magic :D
Fantastic video, thank you!
Thank you!
WOAH, that stop motion! That wasn't your first doing that, was it? That was very well done.
Thank you! Actually my 2nd try only :)
beautiful presentation!
Thanks!
Great overview, I'm intrigued!
Getting Playstation 1 vibes at 17:02 🎮
Is FM Radio a feature in this new edition?
Yes, it still has a radio…in fact it can even transmit its audio to a radio
Honestly so glad that you got an OP 1 Field. You are so incredibly talented and I genuinely cannot wait to see how you use it. This thing looks/sounds incredible
Thank you very, very much!!!
Great vid! Can you do a vid on how you did the cool stop motion?
Hey! I think it's a bit too off topic for my channel, but I can simply tell you. I used an app called stop motion studio on iphone and moved everything bit by bit (more than 300 pictures)
Cant wait to hear what u make on it :)
Personally my only gripe with mine is the key bed. I don’t like the key play as much as the old honestly. Feels like my pinkies don’t trigger on time as well. Seems like a shallow throw if that makes sense. It also happened on the old but not as often. Also have large hands
I think it might soften after a while...but I can't promise of course.
My used OG OP-12 felt a lot looser too ;)
Wonderful videos! Love the stop-motion intro as well (someone mentioned that already). Ordered mine today so this the place to learn it inside out 🪺🪸
Thanks! Hope you’ll enjoy!
just ordered my first original op-1. im so excited lmao
Nice, enjoy ;)
Hey man, congratulations on this! As someone who LOVES the OP-Z and was considering picking up either the OP-1 Field or the original OP-1, I wondered what, if anything, you wish this could do that the OP-Z can. Or does this make the OP-Z redundant for you?
Thanks! Well since the OP-1 is the shiny new thing, of course I am focussing heavily on it right now. And at the moment, if I could have only one it would be the field. BUT that doesn't make the OP-Z redundant at all. The OP-Z is waaaay better at: sequencing, arranging songs, live performance, and more detailed changes.
Where the OP-1 field wins: Sampling, re-sampling, live recording, committing to things and being versatile.
@@SONWU Thanks, man! This really helps. And would you still recommend picking up the original OP-1 for a good price? I think that the sampling and resampling capabilities are the things that appeal to me the most as I don’t enjoy sampling on the OP-Z.
Great video. Love the stop motion intro. Is the keyboard the same as the og op1?
Thank you. I can't 100% answer this. It of course is much newer therefore more resistant than the used OG OP-1 that I had.
But if it is really different 🤷♂️
@@SONWU okay thanks
That intro was slick!
Thank you!
Great, alot of the improvements is software related that can easily can be as well on the original op1
I don't know if the OG has enough power under the hood to support those changes.
That reverb is nice as it should at that price. 😂 Looking for nice these to say.
I know everyone says the screen is a big improvement but I do miss having OLED. Really like the UI enhancements tho, especially watching the tape move from reel to reel.
I guess everyone views it a little different..I like the old OLED too, as well as the colors and animations...but the visibility of the tape tracks on the field is way better.
Thanks for the great review. I was a huge fan of the OG device and was more productive with it than any other machine.
Please could you tell me whether the audio in is noisy in any way? If I ever wanted truly clean transfer of audio on my OG, I generally had to do it via the computer because I would get some strange digital artifacts through the line in (definitely no effects accidentally left on).
No, so far I haven't noticed any noise issues...only when hooking many things together in a big setup (ground noise), which is fairly normal. But the OP-1 field's sound is very clean and there is no noise issue.
@@SONWU Oh that's fab. The power switch on my OG has finally succumbed to that funny problem and I miss the op-1. Being able to record nice clean audio from other gear (just one box at a time is fine) will be brill. Cheers for answering :)
@@christianvenning262 No worries!
Great video. I still find the price of TE stuff just wild. When you compare the OPZ and OP1 I find it crazy that the OP1 is nearly 3x the price. The TX6 and TP7 with the TP7 being £200 more that a 12 in/out mixer recorder!?! And now the EP133 where the hoodie, bags and shorts add a further £400 when the machine is only £299. I love the stuff but I think they draw the prices out of a fishbowl!
Yeah it sucks that they are so expensive... yes they are good and they are pretty much Apple compared to Roland or novation... the problem is.. are they really worth the money? THAT much money?... i think not really... I sold my OP-1 OG and bought an Akai force and TB-03... much better value imo.
Yes they are worth it. They are ecosystems. @@DJCJ999
Hi! Great video. My OP-1F arrived. I noticed that the volume nob is a bit wobbly, which is kind of irritating. Do you have the same ‘issue’?
Mine isn't wobbly, but my Op-1 has issues with the outputs not having the same volume. I'll get it exchanged.
Worthy product for an enthusiasts. I'd love to see something from TE more budget friendly for everyone. Will be waiting for your music with that one too 💗
I think we all would love that :)
You can get a PO-33 for 1/20th the price of the Field. Sound quality isn't so great but in some ways it actually has more functionality.
8:10 awesome, first person to mention this
Cheers!
love the unboxing stop motion!!!
Thanks!
@@SONWU very informative. i really want a field so bad. subscribed!
@@julesfrancis Good luck, don't overlook the OP-Z though ;)
Haha, loving the Wes Anderson-esque opening animation
Thank you :)
yo SON WU do you know if they are done with updating the original ? stuff like the information overlay and the new effects would be awesome for the og
I honestly don't have a clue...but my guess is, that the old one won't be getting too many significant updates.
the improvements seems attended to make sound withtout parasite noise for a machine costing 2000€... the machine looks nice but as always, I never go to get a OP1 due to the price and not getting the proper function needed to make music without noise and parasite issues. Thanks for this great video with a detailed explanation of the improvements, OP1 field seems to be an achieved version of a more prototype version.
You’re an amazing sound designer
Thanks 🙏
Thank you!
My pleasure :)
Hi, really nice overwiev... Do have an OP-1 Field possibility to record 8 mono tracks instead of 4 stereo please?
Yes, you can theoretically do this by panning the signal before recording. hold shift & turn the red encoder, when on the tape screen.
22:52 if i understand correctly you can record something to a lofi tape (like a drum loop or something), lift it and drop it to the hifi tape to have the lofi characteristic of that recording mixed with your hifi recording… does it work that way?
Exactly! that's how it works
@@SONWU awesome ;)
@@SONWU That's sickkkk
excellent review - one day i will sell enough kidneys to get this - the 8 projects vs just 1 makes it worth it alone even without all the other excellent improvements, though i like the aesthetic of the old one better. you’ll need to spill coffee on it to get the vibe of your star wars vintage op-1!
question - can you program the filter to modulate in sync with the tempo? the old op-1 doesn’t allow that, which means you can’t do good sample and hold bass patches. from what i can tell the new op-1 doesn’t do it either which is a shame, but maybe i missed it in the manual
Thank you! I think if I spill coffee on this on it’s time for seppuku…
About the LFO. I think I don’t quite understand. Isn’t the LFO time synced, when the numbers are showing (rather than the dial)?
The random LFO can now also be assigned to a single parameter.
🤷♂️
@@SONWU on the random lfo in the OG OP-1 the speed has no numerical values, you just crank it up or down visually - you can also assign to a specific parameter, but you have no ability to sync the random LFO as far as I can understand at least…
oops and you’re right it affects all parameters
@@WHATISPOLITICS69 Mystery solved then?
I like the addition of being able to chose which value is being randomized (you can still choose all as well).
Also the velocity LFO is pretty cool.
Goddamn that intro is so cool
Thank you very much :)
25:25 i’m glad too! except the built in manual is a little fluffy? that ram/storage is prob better off reserved for something more creative in the future imo
True, forgot about that...
20:03
I guess they meant old dead format by Sony called MD. (minidiscs) At the times all use special MD decks to edit the recordings on them.
Sure, I just didn't know what effect it was supposed top have on the sound when I made the video :)
The reason I sold my original OP1 was because when I resampled two or three tracks down to a single track in tape mode it would often sound like it lost a lot of fidelity. Does that happen with the OP1-Fld as well?
No, the OP-1 field has really good audio quality in general…the OG is very different with that.
Is it possible to make 3D music, soundtrack and effect with this? I still new to music making but what I thought is why we can't just use our PC/Mac keyboard as music inputs and use audio software like logic Pro to set these sounds and record and play it that way? Do their setups are good with XLR mics and devices inputs and outputs, do XLR mics even necessary because they seem to use 3.5mm more? If I have many sound sources of my own, how do I input it without record it again with the build in mic and also can I connect an external mic to it directly to record the input sound? Is it really enough to just record hand clap and other instrument with the internal mic without external mic and post process first? Can I make futuristic soundtrack and not lofi on it?
This may not be the instrument for your desired use case…sticking with a computer might be better for you.
Hi there, the original had a lot of pops and clicks when recording doing an ambient loop on tape. Has this been fixed with the field?
I haven't noticed too many clicks when recording. However the drum sampler still has no decay parameter, which can cause clicks. It has an attack...so I am hopeful they will somehow put a decay in there with it.
I am actually considering the OP-1 field - but I actually have a few questions about the features.
1. Does the OP-1 field have a more sophisticated sequencer for drums? - I actually stumbled across a video of yours, where you sequenced famous drum beats on the older OP-1, but you dropped a snare in the pattern, that actually contributed to the groove; while that isn't a major issue, it does kinda disable workflow if, for example, I need drums, but I can't sequence them - I have to record them manually or import a sample.
2. Is the OP-1 set in a single time signature or can you change it? - Im assuming it's set in 4/4, but what If I want to write music in a different signature; for example 3/4 - do I change it or does the machine decide based on what I sequence; How does it really work?
3. Can you record multiple instruments onto one track? - As far as I know, the 4 track system is kind of a limiting factor for the richness of the recording; let's say I want to layer multiple voices to make a chord, can I record each voice onto one track - is that possible? (Even If it would be a hindrance to correct, if a mistake is made.)
4. Can I literally use the OP-1 field as sampler or song player? - This is a bit specific, but this actually would benefit live performances - with the larger memory, theoretically, you could upload not only samples, but entire backing tracks, that you can playback and play over live with a synthesizer from the OP-1, connecting an instrument OR using the MIDI feature you talked about.
1. Same sequencers as the OG...programming drums can be cumbersome.
2. You can change time signatures and sequence length in the sequencers.
3. You can record (overdub) onto 1 track as many times as you like, or record voices one by one onto different tracks. You CANNOT however record onto multiple tracks at the same time, if that's what you are asking.
4. YES
Hope this helps!
@@SONWU Thank you so much for replying! This was helpful.
@@oakwardly My pleasure!
Great machine even if so expensive!
The only big doubt, Can you export the tracks separately but also with effects ?
It's possible ?
On the original op-1 no !
God synthesizers sound like aphex twin, I really love it!
Once you have recorded the tracks, the FX are recorded with it. This is the same as on the OG. Sorry for the bad news ;)
If only TE would come up with a comparable upgrade of the OP-Z. Both versions of the OP-1 are pricey boxes of fun, but their lack of multi-timbral, editable sequencing really limits their actual usefulness, at least from my point of view.
The OP-Z is bi-timbral in an outputs sense if you use the new line module. Also can run audio out to a pedal and back in. Makes it way more useful.
I understand what you mean. But that is part of the appeal to me. Very different to the OP-Z you have to commit and work with the tape.
It's a refreshing approach to me and allows me to not second guess too much.
Haven’t got past the first 1 minute. Just been repeating that unboxing 😂
Thanks :)
Woot. Congrats.
Thanks Brian!
Honestly I’m so happy you got this. High-key you fucking deserve it. Incredible piece of machine and I cannot wait to see how you use it
Well done! Very good device summary and review of the changes/improvements when compared to the original OP-1. As you mentioned, there have been many complaints with respect to the price tag. Of course I’d rather pay less … actually, I think we would all vote for a minimal price approaching $0 right? :) I remind people of the price individuals were willing to spend on the OG OP-1 (in 2018) when it was out of stock / out of production. I could only fine an OP1 for sale on eBay. Bidding prices increased throughout the year and people were buying used units for $3000 - $4000. Then TE announced they would begin making more OP-1 units and sent an email on Valentine’s Day 2019, “True Love Never dies” with an updated price of $1250 (I think). There were some updates, screen and some other internal components. Anyway, if demand is THAT high then I think TE could probably charge even more than $2000 for the OP-1 field and it would still sell out.
[if someone from Teenage Engineering reads that last sentence…. Please ignore my opinion… and please don’t increase the price trying to reach equilibrium based on the comment. I don’t want people to blame me and hunt me down. Haha]
In 2011 the original “OG” OP-1 was selling for $799. TE bumped up the asking price to $849, then $999 (I think). It has always sold out very quickly. Given all of the OP-1 field improvements, factoring in the demand plus all of the recent inflation crap… well, the cost makes sense to me.
My final comments: why did you have to point out the possible slight misalignment of the stop, play or tape buttons… now I’m going to be thinking about it and looking for it. Hahahha. (I am kidding of course).
I loved your comment about the mini disc when you were covering the tape modes, “…and the Disk Mini…Who knows what the disk mini is.”
Thank you very much for your feedback!
Haha, The misalignment is so minimal...doesn't bother me at all.
The device is great anyway. It makes beats, that's what counts :)
Let me remind you that they sell a plain shirt for 500 dollars. Teenage engineering used to be about quirky tech products that most could afford, but now they are just selling products at a pretentious price level. We are in the middle of an economic crisis and they could, without a doubt, be more inclusive with their prices, but choose to not be that. It is now unfortunately a brand for the few, and I say that as an owner of the original OP1 that I already got at a price way too steep. This is just tone deaf.
@@FelixErikson I am officially reminded :)
@@SONWU What is your opinion on the pricing? I think it can be a good product while still being overpriced.
@@FelixErikson Exactly what you said. It's a great product....would I like it to be cheaper? 100%. Yet, at the current price it was still worth it for me. But I also make it the center of my setup. If I wanted to just toy around with it, it wouldn't be worth it.
Excellent review.
Only downside is the new colour,
You totally sold it.
Yup still not a fan of the new design :)
That new reverb and synth engine take the op1 to a new level IMO. I love my og OP-1, but I do tire of the synth engines and I always found them a bit limiting. The new engine brings us a bit closer to a trad synth sound
Yes, they are nice additions. But even the old engines really come to shine on the field. I even prefer the spring reverb :)
What does the new square button next to the volume do?
It’s an antenna for the radio
Gracias por el aporte. 👍
🙏
Is the distortion at 16:13 and 20:40 from you recording too hot, or is the instrument clipping?
I am not sure, but it could be the instrument. But you can turn the level of each synth engine up or down as you like to prevent this from happening!
How about a video showing bluetooth midi with the op-z and op-1f?
Will probably touch on that in a video soon!
What speaker are you using? Internal speakers from a computer or something?
I am recording into an interface...and wearing headphones in this video I believe.
Is it possible, with the right cable, to connect audio from OG to field using USB?
Should work, yes!
You talk about thing which we have to imagine, such as the I/O ports. Probably better as a radio show.
True, I could have shown them. But if you want a radio show, just turn off your screen ;)
is it suitable for live sampling/looping for DJ performance?
I think for that type of application I wouldn"t recommend the OP-1.
That animation was dope as
Thank you!
Thanks for this video. Unless I am mistaken Disc Mini is just a Mini Disc: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MiniDisc
Correct!
If only they could have added the sequencer from the OP-Z to the OP-1 Field and called it the OP-1Z. The tape thing made me sell the OP-1 and it seems the field stays faithful to that concept.
To be honest, this should just be priced at the original OP-1 price (they already raised that price multiple times) and the original OP-1 should be lowered in price. It seems if they feel they can get away with a higher price, they will try ... and succeed (?) :(
Yeah, the price is high. No doubt about that.
Please can we just get an op-z in an op1f body???? Please TE!!! Opz is the best thing ever but the design itself is crapola
You found the super secret negative zero mode!
Too good to have that few views. Maybe release the intro separately?
Thank you…might do that ;)
Can it send sound from usb c? Wonder if i can use my usb c headphones
It acts as a usb-c interface and host…so probably yes, but I haven’t personally tested it with such headphones.
12:35 that deep bass sound would love to know how you made it
That is the sound of the kick drum getting the filter to self oscillate, because I have the resonance cranked up. As well as having the envelope follower activated (beige knob) to shift the cutoff frequencies depending on the volume of the incoming signal.
