    The two-tone ambulance siren was designed to cut through other noise and not be ignored. In the UK it's an accepted rule of the road (although not an actual law) that drivers pull over and let an ambulance by if its lights are flashing and siren sounding. The same for fire and police vehicles.
    On the music: the label 'progressive rock' was invented by critics. I think a lot of rock bands in the 70s experimented with sounds, rhythms and song structures, absorbing influences from jazz and classical, traditions from other cultures and even some avant garde sources - some more than others. It only became regarded as a 'genre' in retrospect.

      Well, the ambulance siren certainly served its purpose in that aspect, and pulling over is also courtesy here in Canada.
