  • To prove he was human, Brian Christian competed against some of the world's most advanced AI.
    Brian Christian competed in an annual Turing Test competition as part of the Loebner Prize, in which he had to convince a group of judges that he was a human, not a computer program. He won, and was named the "Most Human Human."
    This video is part of Machines With Brains, a series about what it means to be human in a world that’s increasingly filled with robots.

    So he went and studied interactions between people, analyzing how they respond to each other and what made those responses human. Seems to me that HE is the one trying to be a computer program.

      Whats amazing is that if he succeeded at being the "most human human" via research, his thought processes behind conversations during the turing test might actually be *invaluable* for anyone trying to make an AI.
      In becoming "more human" as a human, he may have found the tools to become "more human" as a machine.

      He's literally doing the same thing as the computers, except less efficiently, so eventually the computers will have enough processing power to out-research him. They don't need to sleep. They don't need to take breaks. He is setting himself up for failure.

      I mean, that is how one prepares for a test after all. It's a lot easier for a human to act in a way that's robotic than it is for a robot to pretend to be human, all he did was make sure to not fall into that trap.

    The quote from John Lucas is interpreted completely wrong. Lucas said, "And it must be admitted, it often does fail - but not because machines are so intelligent, but because humans, many of them at least, are so wooden. ...there are many people... who are entirely rule-based and take care to never to do or say anything unless it is in accordance with the rule-book, Turing's Test would classify them with the artificial algorithmic intelligences, not because they were artificial, but because their responses were mechanical."
    He means that many people's responses are already so structured such that they can be modeled with simple 'if-then' rules. And that's where machines excel. The idea that diminishing 'bandwidth' of human communication will make it simpler for computers to communicate is total nonsense. By being completely verbose and structured in your communication, you can _easily_ communicate with a machine. What do you think a programming language is? By ultimately stripping messages down, you make it _more_ difficult for machines. The more syntax that is made ambiguous, the more that *context* will carry meaning. And context is _not_ rule-based.

      It's impossible to make a machine seem human, because a machine will have it's knowledge coded into it. If you ask a machine it's opinion on something, it will have to pull it's response from a database of responses. If it uses the internet it will seem far too smart. If it doesn't it will seem far too dumb.
      The only way I can think of to be successful would be to write a program that is able to learn the same way we do and just let it live for 20 or more years the same way a person would. Let it play, send it to school ect.

    As a communication major, I'm getting very tired of people saying that "Human communication is going down the toilet."
    Never in the history of the world have there been more people connected at once. We've gone from tribal and oral tradition to this very sequestered, very nationalistic tradition, and now we're back as one big connected global village.
    It's fascinating. I have friendships with people on all 6 inhabited continents. Never before has something like that been possible.
    Whenever I hear someone say "The art of communication is dying," I have to oppose that sentiment by saying exactly this.
    Human communication has never been stronger, and it will only get better.
    Stop being nay-sayers.

      Quality vs. Quantity. I believe people are referencing the quality of communication. Not quantity.

    • @GrtrThnClnD
      @GrtrThnClnD 6 лет назад +1

      Just because people have friends overseas doesn't mean they have a lot of friends nor does it mean the quality of the communication gets watered down in favor of quantity. Communication technology made it possible for us to find people with the same mindset and interests, and that itself is a core foundation in building strong relationships. So yes, I would say that the quality of communication has greatly improved with the invention of the internet, at least for me.
      For comparison, a lot of people with depression and suicidal tendencies are more open to talk anonymously online rather than their relatives, neighbors or school friends in fear of having their personal image tarnished. Long gone were the days where people have to sneak away from their homes and find a counselor or someone that they can trust in their small, limited area to feel a little better about themselves.

      Random Videoz I think what is happening is we are shortening our language. We have abbreviations and acronyms that save us time from having to type/say different words while the same message is being portrayed. As long as there isn’t a lack of communication in this shortening, i don’t see the problem. Along with that, I think that emojis are actually improve the quality by adding expressions. I learned in Psyhology that the faces we make for emotions (happy, mad, sad) are global which means that no matter where you are from, you’ll understand the language of the face. So emojis are a visual representation of emotions that have the same definition to everyone, telling stuff that you can’t put in words.

    • @SmithdoesMinecraft
      @SmithdoesMinecraft 6 лет назад +3

      While in theory increased communication should increase quality as well, it doesn't actually work like that. Similar to how increased amount of generations/small generations increase rate of evolution in biology, the same concept could be applied here. Language is becoming more ambiguous. You can very well put emojis in words. The most crude way is to simply describe the emoji. You could of course just say "I was being sarcastic here", but people don't. Emoji's are an ambiguous way to talk. As emojis take so little effort, people put little thought into them. This makes them misused and thus they devolve. There are also problems with the current system. Emojis are not regulated as each system has their own standards. This causes possible misinterpretations of the meaning. Also people with poor social cues or inexperience chatting online are greatly unable to read emojis. They are almost another language. When do we use another language in supplement with our current one? Never because it is inefficient and redundant. TL;DR Because of their ease of use and thus misuse, emojis have become meaningless ambiguous ways to express emotions.

    • @GraveUypo
      @GraveUypo 6 лет назад

      there's nothing to disagree. is there a more compact way to convey a feeling or action than a picture that takes the space of a couple characters? there is not.
      emojis are cheap worthless little pictures that detract from the message. the recipient of emoji-infested text instead of figuring out the other person, has the desired perceived emotions cheaply encoded and packaged, no thought required.
      i don't take people who constantly use emojis seriously at all.

      In English class we had a "fun" project of translating "The Raven" into emojis and explaining them... If this is what English class if now, not taught by a millenial, imagine it in the future. The problem is we are on a slippery slope. Eventually, imagine all of us using emojis.

    • @xxXthekevXxx
      @xxXthekevXxx 6 лет назад

      I’ve always agreed with this. Communication is only partly based on the content of the text. A very large part of human communication isn’t verbal. So using emojis greatly enhances your ability to express how you truly feel (where text alone would fail to communicate the same things).

    Yeah, except we aren't meeting the machines in the middle. Each time we change our mode of communication, we choose one that is more rapid and more emotive than the previous. We add new characters to our character sets. We convey more information in smaller bursts of text. Each character gains more meaning to the point where whether or not a period is added can mean the beginning or end of a relationship. The conclusion was simple-mindedness.

I was talking to it and I was with my family and it said something like “I can tell that you’re with other people right now.” And I asked, how does it know that and it gave me an honest answer, that I allowed it to access my microphone. Lmao now I’m reminded to turn that shit offf

    Emojis act more a an iconography or second punctuation system to show emotions and other things that our language otherwise wouldn't out in every situation.
    "I'm so tired 😋" is different from "I'm so tired 😭"
    Human communication is becoming more efficient, not less complex.

    Why be more human?
    Being made to think logically, we are by definition and by creation, pure logic. There is a minuscule chance that, not even the most smartest man in the world and the most wisest can be as purely logical as Artificial Intelligence.

  • @Castodas

    At first, I find myself agreeing completely with the end statement of the video that we are lowering our communication expectations through emoji text.
    From that point I was ambivalent towards the message of the video in regards to a Human passing the Turing Test. The comments below make me lean more towards the idea that what he did to pass the turing test involved too much preparation. IMO he should either already be able to convince judges that he is human without preparation or prove that something is wrong with the judging methods by failing and then revealing he is indeed human. More to the point, what REALLY was the point of passing the turing test? What does that prove?
    Finally, after giving it more thought, I think the use of emoji's goes a bit deeper than what he makes it seem. Emojis are a way to express an emotion through an apparatus not acutely involved in one's body language- frowning, laughing, expression of the eyes; otherwise you just get text lacking a certain level of context and something as obscure as sarcasm with text based communication becomes easier to recognize using the emojis. So, I think this video was kind of dumb. Also, Brian Christian seemed more like a robot to me... Is this the actual turing test or something??

    Although people think that "communication is going down the toilet!", Surely the most simplistic and efficient way of communicating is the best. Why do I need to spend minutes saying "Good morrow to you, sir" I could just say "Hi" and be done. And emojis, despite some people's hated use, allow communication to be extended further through one symbol expressions.

    The most human thing are our errors. Grammatically. Our casual manor of speech and slang. Being humble enough to admit things that are embarrassing, things we’d like to be better at. Making others feel appreciated in conversation or even showing negative signs of character. We are programmed by genetics but we are fluid in spirit

    All these people talking about how this was pointless, or how excited they are about AI and whatnot and completely missing the point of why he did this. He did this so that he could prove that humans are worth something. So that he could show that humans are complex. And he did this interview to talk how there is more to humanity than texting through a screen.
    Honestly. It makes me wonder, did Turing intend the turning test as a test where a human-looking android can convince the researcher that it is human, or that a text bot can prove that it is human? Because, as the person here says, there is far more to being a human than can be tested for in a Turing test, and that the Turing tests and the testers, are, perhaps, flawed themselves in what it means to be human.
    It makes me wanna go out and talk to a random person - and I think I will.
