  • There is a concern among some Sherpas that there may not be any guides on Everest in 10 years. The reasons for this include the dangerous nature of the job, the decreasing number of people registering as mountain workers, and the desire of Sherpa parents for their children to pursue alternative careers.
The job of a Sherpa guide is one of the most dangerous in the world, with over a third of the 332 people who have died climbing Everest between 1921 and spring 2023 being mountain guides.
The number of individuals registered as mountain workers has decreased by a fifth over the past 15 years, to just under 13,000 people today, and many Sherpas are leaving the profession to work in construction and hospitality or move away from the Himalayas entirely. Most Sherpa climbers encourage their children to go to university and find alternative careers, and the exodus of Sherpas from the profession is seen as a threat to the future of mountaineering in Nepal.

Thanks for spreading the information about the challenges the sherpas face. They should be compensated more (with life/health insurance) for the extreme hard work and risk they take for others to have fun.

I read somewhere that he cheapest companies are hiring Nepali lowlanders and calling them Sherpas. I could see a DNA based certification becoming very valuable in the future. It's the natural ability of these high mountain dwellers to cope with low oxygen that makes their skills so valuable.
